Safe Environment: Diocesan Policies for All Parish Volunteers
Thank you for your interest in IHM Church ministries. We are happy to have you become an active volunteer of our faith community! IHM Church is committed to providing a safe environment for all members of our faith community, especially children and vulnerable adults. In accordance with the Diocese of Charlotte requirements, all parish volunteers must complete several compliance items, detailed below, before participating in parish ministry.

This site will allow you to create a Virtus account, register for the required Protecting God's Children Workshop and background check, view the diocesan Sexual Misconduct Policy and Code of Ethics Policy and complete the Acknowledgements of Receipt. It is important that you select Immaculate Heart of Mary Church as the primary location where you will be volunteering.
The Protecting God's Children Workshop is a 2 ½ hour program intended to educate volunteers to recognize and prevent sexual abuse. Upon completion of the workshop, you will receive online monthly training bulletins via email. It is important that you complete these brief bulletins in a timely manner. The Diocese of Charlotte does require compliance and will suspend your Virtus account if you
do not complete the bulletins, thereby interrupting your ability to-volunteer.
Will you be driving for your ministry? The diocesan Properties and Risk Management Department requires all drivers to complete an Approved Driver Status form and await diocesan approval before driving on behalf of the parish. Please complete the forms below and contact Judy Ledesma, the IHM Safe Environment Coordinator, to complete this process. A color copy of your driver's license is required when you submit the form. Upon approval, you will complete a brief online defensive driving module.
The preferred method for filling out all required forms is online via the Virtus website, as described above. If you are unable to access the forms via Virtus, they are available for download at the links below.
As part of our regular practice at Immaculate Heart of Mary, we audit the Safe Environment compliance files regularly. Active volunteers must have background checks renewed every five years, and may be randomly renewed more often. You will be contacted by the parish office if a renewal is required. This is done in compliance with the USCCB’s requirements.
