EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING, Immaculate
Heart of Mary Catholic Church, April 19, 2010, 7 PM, Room #2. PRESENT: Chmn
Kwan, Jan Hitch, Lon Atkins, Margo Atkins, Betty Galgoci, Nancy Skee
Meeting opened with all reading the Capital
Campaign Prayer.
Minutes of the February meeting were read and
approved.
Jan Hitch read next Sunday’s Acts 43-52; 13-14.
Reflections on the readings were shared.
Nancy Skee reported that the Spanish classes
ended with a celebration at a Mexican restaurant in Greensboro with 18 present.
She is waiting to hear more details from a college professor who wants to run a
12 week trial course for beginners using a program she has created. New series
of classes is set to begin Sept. 23 if volunteer teachers are available.
Nancy’s report continued: Our 6th
International Festival to celebrate Pentecost Sunday is May 23, 3:30 PM to 7
PM. As always we have scheduled very talented stage entertainers and games and
activities for the children. We expect attendance to be between one and two
thousand as in the past. As Fr. Jack wished this to be a free event, it has
become a community covered dish where the only admission asked of guests is to
bring food to share. However, there are expenses to be covered ($l,000 to
$2,000). In previous years we have had generous sponsors to provide these funds
such as Ilderton and Faltynski, as well as many others. Our club members donate
tons of food and other items needed to make it a festive occasion. This year
instead of asking for sponsors and leaving profit from our fundraiser event in
the general church fund, we have reserved the use of it for festival expenses.
However, we discussed that perhaps we should have tried to get sponsors this
year in order to leave more in the church funds. It was decided that we will
send out letters for next year. Also one of our Club members will be contacting
international businesses in High Point to seek sponsors. Chmn Kwan said he
will try to get Fr Jack to allow a few words of announcement after each mass the
weekend prior to the festival to encourage more of our own parishioners to
attend.
Chmn Kwan said that he had been in touch with
Randy Moser. Stewardship Chairman. The possibility of a stewardship weekend to
replace Appreciation Night is being considered, Such an event might feature 4
or 5 of the larger commissions, which would include our commission.
Jan Hitch reported that 5 people signed up for
HOSEA and that one of the couples is attending Mass here. She said that the
next series of HOSEA will be on Thursday evenings in order to make attendance at
one of the sessions available to Fr. Joe. She mentioned advertising for the
next Open House and HOSEA. We discussed the possibility of a small newspaper ad
next time. Jan also suggested that we should consider changing to some month
other than January to schedule our next Open House. Chmn Kwan stated that he
feels January is the best month because few things are scheduled for that month
following the furious pace of the holidays.
Lon Atkins told us it is time to appoint new
people to the Saturday evening mass as he and Margo have served 6 months. He
offered suggestions as to people who might accept the responsibility. Their
final weekend is April 24. Betty Galgoci has been responsible for checking on
the 9:30 AM Mass. She said that Melanie Delp has been there the past several
Sundays. We discussed the difficulty of getting 3-month commitments especially
over the summer months. Chmn Kwan commented that the welcoming method we now
use will continue since it appears to be working well.
Chmn Kwan challenged us to recruit more members
for our Commission. He said that we will be responsible for set-up and
decoration for Fr. Jack’s party on June 12. Other projects for the remainder of
this year include Eucharistic Congress and International Club fundraiser . He
asked if we had other goals or projects to suggest and received no response.
The meeting was adjourned with “Our Father” and
exchange of peace.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
MEETING, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Feb 15, 2010, 7PM, Room
#2. PRESENT: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, LeRoy Turner, Nancy Skee, Lon Atkins, Margo
Atkins, Sharon Trax, George Trax, and Judith Griffin.
The meeting began with
introductions of the five members of the weekly welcome table volunteers who
were present. Chmn Kwan presented the background and some guidelines for welc
ome table greeters. He suggested procedures, protocol, and suggested written
materials to have available on the table. Following his instructive
presentation, he asked the group for suggestions for improving and/or
enhancing our program.
In general, response was
positive in favor of continuing the program and suggestions for improvements for
improving it were lacking as most Catholics have had little or no experience
with programs of this type. A question involving setting up the table for the
weekend masses resulted in these suggested procedures
1. Keep the table in the same
location each week (need one table of any size and 2 chairs) To be set up by
5:30 PM Sat. Mass volunteer
.
2.Welcomers at the 5:30 PM
Sat. Mass obtain the materials from Room 2 and leave them for
succeeding masses.
3.Welcomers from the last
Sunday mass have the responsibility of returning materials to Room 2 and putting
the table and chairs away.
It was suggested that we ask
Tom Burke to schedule a monthly formal tour of the church following the Mass of
his choice. Example: Following the 9:30 Mass on the welcoming weekend of each
month. This information might be included in the welcome package mailed out to
newly registered parishioners as well as verbal invitations from welcome table
volunteers.
In
conclusion, the Evangelization Commission members thanked the welcomers and
asked them to contact one of our members if they have any problems or
suggestions. They were given permission to leave before items on our agenda
were discussed. Lon and Margo Atkins chose to remain and were invited by Chmn
Kwan to become permanent members of our Commission. Minutes of last meeting were
read and approved.
We
discussed the level of success of IHM Open House. Jan Hitch made comments that
due to the weather and lack of advertising, we attracted only 4 visitors.
However, she pointed out that this was not bad, considering that all four have
signed up for the HOSEA program which will begin on March. It was suggested
that we may want to consider some paid advertising as well as changing the time
of Open House to a season of better weather.
We
also discussed the success level of Volunteer Appreciation Night which was also
under attended. Jan Hitch stated that people who are not volunteers should be
present to show appreciation for those who do. It was suggested that a new
format for this might be considered in future such as having a “Volunteer
Weekend “ instead of “Volunteer Night”so that volunteers attending each mass
might be honored and followed by a reception after each mass. (This might work
in with welcoming weekend). Meeting ended with “Our Father” and peace hugs.
EVANGELIZATION
COMMISSION MEETING, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Jan 18, 2010, 7
PM, Room #2 Present: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, Betty Galgoci, Nancy Skee
Meeting opened
with all reading the Capital Campaign Prayer.
Jan Hitch read the
minutes of the November meeting which were approved as read.
Nancy Skee
reported that 48 are registered for the Spanish classes and one new teacher has
volunteered, Graciela Rodriguez. Classes began Jan 14.
When serving at
Simplicity Meals during Lent was discussed, it was stated that Kathy Faltynski
will schedule volunteers at the next International Club meeting in Feb.
Jan Hitch reported
that she is preparing a flyer to be inserted in the IHM bulletin as well as
reminders about HOSEA amd Open House which is Feb 10. She has also prepared
flyers to be posted in public places where permitted. She has arranged to have
it posted on one television station and sent e-mail to local Catholic Churches
and schools. Nancy Skee has sent notices to HPE, Greensboro Record, and
Diocesan Paper. Since Renewal of Vows is scheduled for the same evening as Open
House Jan and Nancy will be coordinating refreshments with Bethany and Knights
of Columbus. Jan is engaging speakers for the Open House and presenters for the
HOSEA program.
Betty Galgoci
suggested we change the 3 month commitment we have asked our Welcome Table
Greeters to sign up for be reduced to one month. Chmn Kwan stated that the
longer commitment for those willing to do it requires less supervision and
distributes responsibility. Nancy added that with the substitute server list she
is working on for each mass, those who accept the longer assignment do not have
to personally be there for each mass for 3 months but would be responsible to
see that someone is there for the 3 month period. Nancy has been recruiting
extra servers for Welcome weekends. Randy Moser states that the system is
working. It should be noted that Randy has furnished the beautiful bookmarks
that are presented to new parishioners at the Welcome Table. It was decided that
Welcome Table Reps be invited to attend our next meeting to evaluate the program
and suggest enhancements and improvements.
Jan Hitch will
represent our Commission as a speaker at Volunteer Appreciation Night. Nancy
reported that Kathy Faltynski is organizing the refreshments and Chmn Kwan, the
music.
Chmn Kwan
mentioned that we must begin to think of plans for International Festival and
Eucharistic Congress.
The meeting was
closed with the Our Father and peace hugs.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING, Immaculate
Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Nov 16, 2009. 7 PM
Present: Chmn Kwan, LeRoy Turner, Jan Hitch
The meeting opened with the Capital Campaign
Prayer
The minutes of the October meeting were read
and approved.
The group was pleased that the Greeters are
asking visitors to visit the Welcome Desk.
LeRoy Turner reported that the response to the
Welcome Desk has been good and that during his time on the desk he has
registered an average of 2 people per week. He stated that several have
asked for a tour of the church. There was some discussion of this and we
felt that the names of those wanting a tour should be put on a list and we
could perhaps offer a tour once a month. This could be discussed with Tom
Burke. LeRoy stated that the book marks were well received. It was decided
that there would be no other gift.
Larry Kwan said it had been determined that
there would be no pizza party, loaf of bread given or a covered dish supper
for new parishioners for 2009 as the pizza party was not well attended, Fr.
Jack was not in favor of the loaf of bread idea and it was felt that it was
too late in the year to try to pull together a covered dish supper.
Jan Hitch reported that HOSEA is going well
with 5 participants. Jan also reported that Feb. 24, 2010, HOSEA meeting had
been changed due to the Parish Renewal being on that night and that the
church office had suggested that we add April 7th as the final
date for HOSEA to make up for this cancelled
date. Larry Kwan wanted Jan to investigate if HOSEA could be moved up to
start on Feb, 17th, so HOSEA could be completed before Easter. Jan said she
would check this out but upon further thought this will probably not be
possible as Feb. 17th, is Ash Wednesday. Open House is scheduled for Feb.
10, 2009.
Nancy Skee was not present due to illness but
it was noted that the Spanish Classes were nearing completion.
Chairman Kwan stated that the Christmas Party
of the International Club will be Dec. 5, at Kathy Faltynski's house and
urged us to attend. He said to bring a $10 gift for the dirty santa game and
a covered dish to share.
The next Evangelization Commission will be
January, 18, 2010.
The meeting was adjourned with the Our Father
Prayer.

Minutes of Aug meeting were read and approved.
A discussion of Eucharistic Congress followed in
which it was mentioned that Ilderton had offered the use of a 15 passenger van
to transport IHM parishioners who wish to attend and that next year this offer
may be accepted.
Notes of Welcome committee meetings held this

prepared to include with the pack that is mailed out. The letter will instruct
them to pick up their gift on welcoming weekends. Using this as a means to
identify new people, we will have additional ambassadors to introduce them
individually to others.
The meeting was adjourned with Our Father and
peace hugs.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
August 17, 209, 7 PM, Room #2
Present: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, Betty Galgoci, LeRoy
Turner, Nancy Skee
Meeting opened with singing of HOSEA and Capital Campaign
Prayer
Our new member, LeRoy Turner was introduced and he told us
a bit about himself including the fact that he recently received First Communion
and Confirmation after completing the RCIA program here at IHM. Our members
expressed our pride and gratitude that he has chosen to serve with us on our
Commission.
Minutes were read and approved as read by Betty Galgoci and
seconded by Jan Hitch.
Betty Galgoci read John 6: 60-69 followed by reflections
from the members
Chmn Kwan gave a brief summary of the aims and works of our
Commission for the purpose of orienting LeRoy, and answered a few of his
questions.
He ended by reporting that Coco Thornlow had completed the
work of arranging to place a schedule of IHM Masses in 16 local hotels and
motels and expressed his appreciation for the good job Coco had done.
Nancy Skee reported that the Fall Spanish Classes will
begin September 24 and two teachers have volunteered with at least one
substitute. She has sent announcement to Heart to Heart and will soon send out
other press releases.
Jan Hitch reported that Hosea will begin October 21 and
that she will soon be engaging presenters for the six sessions and she said it
is too early to begin advertising.
Nancy gave a brief report on the quilt raffle for which
tickets will be sold after all masses on August 22/23 and 28/29. The drawing
will be at the Church Picnic on September 13.
Betty Galgoci said that she has been speaking at all the
meetings she attends to suggest that we should take notice of those who stand at
mass when visitors are recognized and try to make a point of looking for at
least one of them after mass and introduce yourself.
This was prompted by Nancy’s suggestion that the cover of
our bulletin include a welcome and invitation to visitors. LeRoy then suggested
that we make a welcome table available after masses and offered to volunteer for
this job.
Chmn Kwan said he is working on getting transportation to
the Eucharistic Congress
Meeting adjourned with “Our Father” and Peace Hugs
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church
June 15, 7 PM, Nancy Skee’s Home
(Note: due to VBS no meeting space was available at IHM)
Present: Chairman Kwan, Jan Hitch, Gilda Dau, Nancy Skee
Meeting opened with a prayer to St. Anthony by N. Skee
Minutes of last meeting were read and approved as written.
Gilda Dau read next Sunday’s Gospel; Mk 4:35-41 and
reflections were shared.
Jan Hitch reported the dates of the next session of Hosea
and explained that to date several people may sign up for the Fall series. She
mentioned that she had received a request for information about our program from
another parish which she supplied.
N. Skee reported that the festival was a success except
that we ran out of food before the end probably due to our publicity failing to
mention that guests needed to bring food to share. The big problem was that
some of our entertainers went away hungry as well as thirsty. It had already
been decided in International Club meeting that special provision must be made
for serving entertainers in future. Also, people who handle our publicity will
be asked to allow us to proof read it before it goes to the publisher.
Her report mentioned the participation of the Korean Church
at Montlieu who seemed pleased to be invited. They brought food and a pottery
demonstration. Mr. Woo said that he will encourage some of the Parishioners to
join our club.
Nancy said she would follow up with Coco on providing Mass
times to local motels.
There was discussion about the Polish Night fundraiser in
September and the need to use some of the profit to fund expenses incurred by
the International Festival, which in the past has been funded by generous
sponsors. Chmn Kwan said he would look into the best way to appropriate what
will be needed next year. He will also investigate the possibility of
conducting the raffle of a quilt donated by A. Gagnon for the Building
Campaign. He will also investigate possible means of transportation to the
Eucharistic Congress in September.
We discussed the need for a few new members to our
commission and we will try to invite several to our next meeting, which will be
August 17.
The meeting was closed with “Our Father” and refreshments.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Room 2 7
PM May 18, 2009
Present: Chmn Kwan, Nancy Valego, Gilda Dau, Nancy Skee
Meeting opened with reading the Campaign Prayer
Minutes were read by Nancy Skee, approved by L. Kwan and
2nded by Nancy Valego.
Due to the fact that only 2 regular commission members
were present (Gilda arrived as we had ended the meeting), it was brief and
consisted mainly of reviewing what is still needed to be done or checked on for
the International Festival. The following are some of those items our
discussion touched on:
Nancy Valego was encouraged by Chairman Kwan to pursue the
hiring of someone to do the final cleaning after the festival as most
participants are too tired at the end to ensure a satisfactory job. Nancy Skee
reported that the Scouts have promised to help with set up and with putting away
tables and chairs. Chmn Kwan will secure box forms for garbage bags to make the
job of garbage control easier during the hours of the festival. It has been
previously arranged that a truck and driver will be available to haul garbage
away as it accumulates.
Chmn Kwan explained that the Liturgy Commission will not
incorporate readings or greetings in other languages on Pentecost Sunday.
Instead, they will ask people from other countries to stand at some point.
Chmn Kwan reported that he has asked our Communications
Commission to handle publicity for the festival and that our flyers will be
inserted into the bulletin this coming weekend. Nancy Skee agreed to ask Fr.
Jack if attendance might be encouraged at the masses on Pentecost.
Chmn Kwan suggested we contact the Korean Catholic group
who are celebrating mass in the chapel at Montlieu. Nancy Skee agreed to do
this.
N Skee reported that Arleen Gagnon is donating a handmade
quilt to be raffled off and proceeds will go to the building campaign fund.
International club will organize the raffle and have the drawing for it at the
fundraiser in September.
Meeting was closed with Our Father and peace hugs.

classes ended with a covered dish party at her home . The party featured
Spanish food. Three were awarded for perfect attendance.
Chmn Kwan announced that International Festival flyers are
ready to be published and will be ready for distribution by the next meeting on
May 4. He suggested we think of places we might leave them at businesses and
institutions where we receive permission to do so. There followed a discussion
of which bulletin they might be inserted as our desired date is already reserved
by another organization and two inserts are not permitted. Chmn Kwan said we
might get permission from Fr. Jack to hand them out.

to do greetings in various languages at Mass on Pentecost Sunday.
Chmn Kwan agreed to handle TV and Radio publicity and Nancy

kitchen after our next meeting for anyone wishing to use them for their festival
food offering..
Meeting ended with “Our Father” and peace hugs.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Rm 2, 7 PM, Feb. l6, 2009
Present: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, Coco Thornlow, Gilda Dau,
Nancy Skee
The meeting opened with a reading of the campaign prayer.
Minutes were read by Nancy Skee and approved by Jan Hitch,
and seconded by Chmn Kwan
Gild Dau read the Gospel for next Sunday, Mk 16:15-18 and
the group reflected on the reading.
Coco Thornlow reported that she researched the possibility
of placing our mass schedule in local motels and found that all we need to do is
send a request on church letterhead with information about masses and the motels
will include it in their guest book. Chmn Kwan asked Coco to obtain names and
addresses of the motels which will be given to our church secretary who will
send out letters with the information. Coco will try to obtain the list of
names within the next two weeks.
Gilda Dau agreed to find out if we can place similar
information at the local colleges and university. There followed a discussion of
what might be done to encourage college students to attend mass here. Gilda
will work on this and report at the next meeting.
Nancy Skee reported that the enrollment for Spanish
classes is 47. She also reported that getting free public notices in the
Diocesan paper as well as High Point Enterprise is more effective if the e-mail
is followed by a phone call or two.
There was a brief discussion of International Festival
plans regarding funds for providing a tent and extra chairs which are a
necessity. It was noted that entertainers does not seem a problem.
There was a brief discussion of fundraiser theme which
seems to be either Colombia or Poland. Chmn Kwan said he will need to find a
date on the calendar for the event and a vote on the theme will be taken at the
next Club meeting.
Jan Hitch reported that 3 signed up for HOSEA but only 2
were at the first meeting. She is encouraging the other one to attend the
remaining 5 sessions. She stated that our Open House drew only 6 guests but
that 3 registered, one signed up for Hosea, and one for RCIA, so she considered
it a successful event. She also reported that she had priced a paid ad for Open
House and Hosea in the High Point Enterprise and it was agreed that we might
consider this for a future Open House. An article about our Hosea program is
soon to be published in the Diocesan paper.
Chmn Kwan mentioned that Volunteer Appreciation Night was a
big success and all will be looking forward to next year’s event. He also
announced that Deacon Fred will be leaving in the near future and will be
replaced by Deacon Wally.
Due to Parish Renewal, our commission will not meet in
March.
The meeting was adjourned with “Our Father” and peace hugs.

and seconded by Chmn Kwan. The correction is as follows: It was concluded that
the Evangelization will not take the Respect Life Commission under its banner.
Betty Galgoci read Mk 16:15-18, followed by reflections.
Nancy Skee reported that 18 are registered for Spanish
classes which will begin this week. She said she has had a problem getting
announcements in the Diocesan paper as well as the High Point Enterprise. She
reported that one teacher has moved out of town, but there is a new volunteer.
There are two teachers and two substitutes at present.
Chmn Kwan will contact Coco Thornlow to see what she found
out about placing information about our mass times and church locations in
local motels.
Jan Hitch reported that she is having difficulty getting
permission to place posters for the Hosea and Open House. Chmn Kwan suggested
that she try funeral homes. Jan suggested that we consider a paid newspaper ad
for Open House and Hosea. She will look into the cost effectiveness of this
method of publicity.
The Diocesan paper has promised to do an article about our
Hosea Progam in the near future. We are working on getting permission from past
participants to be interviewed.
Chmn Kwan urged Jan Hitch and Nancy Skee to attend the
Newcomer reception in an effort to recruit new members to our commission.
There was a discussion of details about the upcoming
Volunteer Appreciation Night.
Nancy said that Kathy Faltynski will do most of the food
shopping and she is asking for 8 ladies to host during the reception. She has

members to our commission: Janet and Danny Paul. Each of us welcomed them and
answered their questions about our commission as well as questions about other
commissions and in general how all are organized and function under the parish
council. In particular, we discussed at length our desire to assist Randy
Moser, the new Stewardship Commission Chairman. Chmn Kwan explained that Randy
has asked our commission for suggestions about welcoming newcomers to our
parish. He said Randy will attend our December meeting to gather our ideas and
suggestions.
Chmn Kwan reported that work
on our church website is being updated and that he has several volunteers who
will help with this project. He is considering including advertising on the web
those businesses who advertise in our weekend bulletin as an added incentive to
subscribers who make it possible for us to have our weekly bulletin printed
free..
Nancy Skee reported that 5 of
the 8 Spanish classes scheduled for Fall are complete with a total of 15
students attending. She added that the new format does not include a
refreshment break which simplifies administration of the program..
Philippine Night was a
success in that those who bought tickets expressed appreciation of the event and
all tickets were sold. The 50/50 raffle won by Terri Scannell, a member of the
International Club put her winnings back in to be given to the Chinese
restaurant owner who nearly lost his life in a mugging while making a delivery.
Jan Hitch reported that no
one has signed up for Hosea in spite of her extensive advertising. Therefore,
plans will be made for Open House on Feb 3 in hopes that a spring session sign

peace and minutes from last meeting.
Corrections were made:
1)The meeting was held in Rm
2, not Rm 1
2) N. Skee reported 32
registered for Spanish classes
3) Suggested that IHM
bulletin contain a permanent Welcome message to guests as well as invitation to
register with instructions as to where and how.
Betty Galgoci motioned that
minutes be accepted as corrected and Coco Thornlow seconded the motion.
Jan Hitch read Mat: 16: 13-20
and reflections were shared by the group.
Chmn Kwan passed out copies
of the new mission statement for IHM church. During our discussion, Fr. Jack
appeared and informed us that there had been further revisions after the one we
held in our hands. He stated the the reference to Vatican II had been placed in
the body of the statement rather than at the beginning, which we agreed was
better for those who might object to the “in your face” reference.
Coco Thornlow read the
mission statement for the Evangelization Commission. We agreed that we like it
as it is written.
Chmn Kwan told us that we
have permission to rent a bus for parishoners who wish to attend the Eucharistic
Congress in Charlotte on Oct 4. N. Skee agreed to write a small article about
this for the Heart to Heart publication.
Chmn Kwan reported that
Italian classes will not be offered at this time. N. Skee reported that 2 new
Spanish teachers have volunteered: Lenis Dau and Ignacio Arroyo. Sara Williams
will continue to teach but Coco Thornlow and Virginia Dau will retire. The
first class is scheduled for Sept 18 and the 8 weeks of classes will be one
hour duration instead of one and one-half hour with refreshment break.
IHM EVANGELIZATION MEETING –
Aug 18, 2008 (cont.)
Jan Hitch reported that she
is preparing to launch publicity for the HOSEA program which will begin in
October and end before Advent. She will soon begin recruiting presenters for
the 6 sessions. As of now there is only one person registered for the sessions.
Since Deacon Kak retired, we
discussed whether he might be willing to continue to serve on our Commission. N.
Skee said she would try to find out.
We briefly commented that our
International Festival last May was a success in spite of the rain that chased
us inside. We think that thanks to the Fil-Am members of our club that plans
for our fundraiser, PHILIPPINE NIGHT is progressing well. Most of the 200
tickets have been distributed to our members along with 50/50 raffle tickets.
Chmn Kwan briefly mentioned
that the 3 of us he had picked to work on the
Building fund committee need
to be there for the meeting on Sept 10 and that he thinks our jobs will be
relatively easy.
The meeting closed with “Our
Father” and peace hugs. Next meeting: Sept 15.

two-minute pitch to seek new volunteers. 2) Include a permanent message of
Welcome and Invitation to register at IHM and instructions for how to do it.

offer the Hosea Program in Spanish. We agree that this is necessary and we will
try to find leaders for the program. Gilda also suggested that we might
consider having a sister parish in a poor country, probably in Columbia where
she has promised to get information regarding various Catholic missions and
needs for us to consider/

EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Rm 2, Oct 15, 2007
Present: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, John McGinnis, James
Leonard, Nancy Skee
Meeting opened with reading of Magnificat and Hail Mary
Minutes of last meeting were read by N. Skee and approved
as read.
Jan Hitch read Luke 18:1-8 and reflections were expressed,
centering around the merits of persistence.
Jan Hitch noted that her announcement for the Hosea program
did not appear in the High Point Enterprise and was late to appear in the
Catholic News and Herald. John McGinnis responded by reading a list of news
sources he had accumulated and commented that getting free space in any of them
is a hit or miss proposition. He proposed that we divide the list and make
phone calls to them when we need publicity for an event. N. Skee suggested that
each of us e-mail our information of upcoming events to John who would then
e-mail it to all of the sources on his list. After that he would select key
sources and ask us to follow up with phone calls. John concurred with this
plan.
Jan Hitch reported that 4 people had attended the first
Hosea session and that she expects at least 3 more for this week’s session. She
also commented that she would try to establish an alternate evening for the
session on Nov. 14 which was cancelled due to a “Town Meeting” scheduled for
that evening.
Chmn Kwan discussed plans for the upcoming Fun Fest
celebration of the 60th anniversary of IHM. In addition to the sale
of baked items, he said that Rita Leonard will be preparing candy apples for
sale.
Chmn, Kwan announced that the date for the 2008
International Festival is May 4.
He also announced that IHM will host Our Lady of Guadalupe
and Torche runners on Nov 29. We agreed that we must find ways to encourage our
non-Hispanic parishoners to attend this spirit-filled celebration in honor of
Our Lady of the Americas.
Other announcements were that Fr. Jack has dec ided that we
will extend our support of our sister parish in Miss. For 2 more years. Plans
for how this will be accomplished will be announced later.
He informed us that a new location in the narthex will be
designated as permanent space for registration forms and other information
regarding ministries within the parish.. He mentioned that Stewardship month
will be in March and we need to select a weeken to feature our commission..
Next meeting will be Nov. 12 instead of 19, due to
holiday. Meeting ended with “Our Father” and peace hugs.l
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Rm 2, Sept. 17, 2007
Present: Fr. Joe, Deacon Kak, Chmn. Kwan, Jan Hitch, John
McGinnis, Nancy Skee
Opening Prayer for success of Eucharistic Congress read by
all
Deacon Kak read Luke 16:10-13 and reflections were
expressed by those present.
Chmn Kwan asked Fr. Joe if some form of invitation might be
added at the beginning of masses when the greeter asks visitors to stand and be
recognized. Fr. Joe responded that it is necessary to direct this question to
Fr. Jack. Some suggestions offered by this commission include: 1) Greeter might
direct them to sign a guest register or to pick up registration materials and
information about our church and its ministries or 2) at minimum, invite them to
return .
Jan Hitch reported that she had made new posters for Hosea
and placed 20 in local businesses, colleges and schools. She sent notices to
radio and TV. To date two people have responded.
N. Skee reported that 30 people are signed up for the
Spanish Classes; some advanced students have been lost to the Italian Classes.
Chmn. Kwan reported that 300 tickets were sold for Italian
Night and that the 50/50 raffle netted $357.00.
Chmn Kwan said that there will be no bus offered for the
Eucharistic Congress this year because the rental is very expensive and that so
few parishoners have taken advantage of it the past two years.
Chmn Kwan announced that our Commission will have a table
reserved for the 60th Anniversary of IHM Church on October 27. It
will be designated as an International Club offering of desserts which will be
available as single serving offerings or whole units to be bought and taken
home for consumption.
The meeting was closed with all reciting the “Our Father”
and peace hugs.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church, Rm 2, 7 PM, June 18, 2007
Present: Chmn Kwan, Jan
Hitch, Gilda Dau, Nancy Skee
The meeting opened with
the reading of a prayer to the Holy Trinity by Nancy Skee and the reading of
Luke1:57-66,80 by Jan Hitch.
There was no reading of
the minutes for May as that meeting date was given to the International Club and
used to make final plans for the Festival which was declared a success.
However, certain changes were suggested for improving it for next time.
It was noted that
Pentecost Sunday coincides with Mothers’ Day in 2008. We have been given
reluctant approval by Fr. Jack to move the event to the following Sunday which
is Trinity Sunday ( May 18).
The upcoming International
Club fundraiser, “Italian Night” was discussed. N. Skee is working on
entertainment. It was decided that the food will be catered, but not served
buffet style, but brought to seated guests. Tickets will be sold in advance and
a price set to reflect a moderate serving of alcohol.
The next Hosea session
will begin Oct. 10. Since participants will be invited to attend mass prior to
the sessions, they will begin at 7:15. Jan Hitch has agreed to take an active
role in coordinating this program and will offer a special prayer presentation
to follow the 6 week program to which all past Hosea participants and others
will be invited.
Both Spanish and Italian
classes will begin in September, dates are on the church calendar.
The 60th IHM
anniversary will be Oct 26-27 and our commission will participate in a fund
raiser fair here at IHM. One suggestion was to take and sell photographs of
people dressed in typical clothing from other countries. Another suggestion was
that we make and sell individual servings of various foreign and domestic
desserts, as eat in or take out.
We discussed various ways
to encourage attendance at the Eucharistic Congress in Charlotte, Sept 21-22,
Chmn. Kwan said he would ask advice from Parish Council .
Under new business, we
briefly discussed making new welcome visitor cards or pamphlets and suggesting
that as visitors stand for the welcome applause, they be invited to pick one up
on the way out. Meeting closed with Our Father and hugs.
EVANGELIZATION
COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Rm 2, 7 PM, April 16,
2007
Present: Kathy Lucido, Betty Galgoci, Larry Kwan, Gilda
Dau, Rita Leonard, John McGinnis, Nancy Skee, Nancy Valego
The meeting was opened by introducing John McGinnis as a
new member of the Commission. He has had experience as a news reporter and
hopes to help us with our publicity for events we sponsor.
Betty Galgoci read the prayer for Evangelization followed
by reading of the minutes from our February meeting by Nancy Skee. Kathy
Faltynski corrected the date of our Italian Night fundraiser from September 14
to September 7. Minutes were approved by Betty Galgoci as corrected.
There was a brief discussion of the results of our
Stewardship Sunday which was considered a success as 31 people signed up for
participation in various activities sponsored by our commission, l8 of whom
signed up for Italian classes.
Rita Leonard suggested that we consider printing small
handouts explaining some of the activities and events that we sponsor so that
when we invite people to join us we can provide answers to their questions in
writing. She also suggested that the International Club needs to come up with
activities and events that do not require so much work and responsibility and
provides opportunity to make casual connections with each other.. She will
propose a picnic at the next meeting to be held sometime this summer after the
festival.
Gilda Dau reported that she had researched moonwalk
equipment for children’s entertainment at the festival and was given budget
approval to head this committee, pending approval by Fr. Jack.
Kathy Lucido asked if we had thought of having First
Aid/EMS available at the festival and it was agreed that we should try to
arrange for this. N. Skee will check with Ann Birmingham.
We discussed difficulty of obtaining sponsors to pay for
tent rental. N. Skee said that those she approached require a letterhead with
tax number from the church which we have not been able to obtain from Anne
Marie. Kathy Faltynski suggested someone should call Joe Hughes and Nancy
agreed to do that.
N, Skee reported that The Boy Scouts will assist in a flag
ceremony to open the festival and will help with set up and clean up. She has
signed up at least 10 separate performances for the event.
Chmn Kwan said that we will set up a stage outside the
front of the church and will try to have at least one tent. Kathy Faltynski
said that we should consider renting chairs as well.
Nancy Valego reported that she has a few people signed up
to provide exhibits and expects to have several more.soon.
Kathy Faltynski said there will be at least four tables
designated as special ethnic classes: Mediterranean, Asian, European and Latino.
It was strongly urged and recommended that we support the
upcoming fundraiser for the Latino Family Center scheduled for May 4. We will
provide desserts and whatever support we are asked to provide.
The meeting was adjourned with the “Our Father” and peace
hugs..
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church, Rm 2, 7 PM, Feb. 19
Present: Chmn. Kwan, Deacon
Kak, Kathy Lucido, Coco Thornlow, Betty Galgoci, Jan Hitch, Gianfranco Vettor,
Victor Dau, Nancy Skee.
Victor Dau was introduced and
welcomed as a new member of our commission. Victor is from Colombia and has been
a member of IHM for several years.
The meeting opened with the
reading of the Evangelization prayer by N. Skee.
The minutes of the January
meeting were read by N. Skee, and approved as read by Betty Galgoci and seconded
by Kathy Lucido.
Deacon Kak read Luke 4:l-13,
followed by reflections.
Chmn Kwan gave a report of
our Open House. Attendance was not as good as our 2006 Open House. We have 7
visitors at this year’s open house while we have 14 at last year’s open house.
However, it turned out 2 signed up for the hosea program, 2 are very interested
to join the RCIA and 2 will attend adult faith formation series. We have 14
signed up for Hosea. 9 attended the first session despite the cold weather. We
expect the number will fluctuate in the 6 to range on each session which will
ideal for a small group setting. Chmn Kwan stated that publicity needs to be
improved and that a parish-wide effort is being made to establish a better and
more effective method of communication. Communication commission has respond to
our request of a “protocol” to be established for publicizing events that all
organizations and ministries in the church can utilize to reach out to the
public as well as to our parishioners. While attendance was disappointing, he
feels we should try again next year.
Chmn Kwan continued with an
explanation of the purpose for Stewardship weekend for the benefit of our new
members to different committees and functions of the our commission, it also
serves to stimulate and draw attention as well as advertising the coming events
to the parishioners. Next, he explained that each commission this year is
assigned a separate weekend. He said we will have 4 tables in the Gathering
Space as follows: 1) Spanish , Italian classes 2)Hosea 3) International Club ,
international festival and dinner/dance fundraiser 4) Eucharistic Congress.
Assignments were made as to who would provide materials and decorations for the
tables as well as who would be responsible for presiding over the tables after
each mass on the weekend of March 3 & 4. Additionally, photos of events
sponsored by our commission will be randomly flashed on a tv screen and a
composite CD of language classes will be played. G. Vettor agreed to design a
sign up sheet for volunteers to be placed on each table.
He also suggested an
arrangement of the tables that will invite attention.
Chmn Kwan also announced that
the International Club will be in charge of the Parish Renewal reception on
Sunday, March ll. Jan Hitch agreed to assist Kathy Faltynski, who heads that
committee.
Chmn Kwan mentioned that
International Club is providing soup and bread on March 30 for the Simplicity
meal and stations of the cross.
He reminded us that we need
to begin fund-raising for tent rental for the International Festival. Greg Tan
has asked for an authorization letter from the church which N. Skee agreed to
acquire for him as well as for herself and others who may want to assist in
obtaining donations. He said that May 27 is fast approaching and that we should
try to sign up entertainment for the event.
Other dates to keep in mind:
Italian Night fundraiser, September 14. (B. Galgoci suggested that we obtain a
DJ who will play a mix of music for dancing); Next Hosea schedule: Oct 10-Nov
21,2007.7:15 PM.. Eucharistic Congress, September 21-22.
The meeting was closed with

from Annapolis, Md. and was active in her parish there.
Minutes of our November

Instead of 12/9. With these
corrections, B. Galgoci motioned to accept the minutes as read and K. Lucido
seconded the motion.
Chmn Kwan asked Jan Hitch
for her reactions to the New Comer Dinner. Her response was positive; her main
complaint: the pizza was cold.
Chmn Kwan reminded us of
dates for International Festival (May 27) and the annual fundraiser for that
organization (Italian Night) September 14. He added that these events had been
briefly discussed at the International Club meeting on Jan 8.
Chmn Kwan opened the
discussion of our second annual “Open House” scheduled for Jan 31. There
followed a lengthy discussion of advertising vehicles and ways to improve our
system of advertising outreach programs and events. Jan Hitch suggested we
advertise via radio stations that accept free announcements for organizations.
L. Kwan said he would look into that as well as other vehicles. Details about
Open House were discussed and ended with areas of responsibility and assignments
as follows: Program- N. Skee, Refreshments – J. Hitch, Hospitality-K. Lucido,
Advertisement –L.Kwan. It was suggested by K. Lucido that we should invite the
Hispanic Community to have a table and presentation at the event. N. Skee said
she would see that they were invited.

Italian Class began Jan 9 with more than 50 registered.
Under Old Business:
topics of the past year l) How to increase attendance at Eucharistic Congress.
Chmn Kwan said that Fr. Jack feels that those who wish to participate will do so
without encouragement beyond furnishing transportation and, 2) “Why Be
Catholic?”. a program advocated by Bishop Jugis. On this we await leadership
from our Pastor or Faith Formation. B. Galgoci, who serves on the Faith
Formation Commission, said she has heard no discussions about the program. For
the present, both topics are closed to this
commission.
We took a break to
have our photo taken for the Church Directory, and as there was no further
business, the meeting was closed with “Our Father” and peace hugs.

Vettor, Maria Rodriquez
The
meeting was opened with singing of “Hosea” and opening prayer by Deacon Kak.
Minutes
were read by N. Skee, approved by Deacon Kak and seconded by B. Galgoci.
N. Skee
reported that Hosea leaders feel there should exist as part of the program some
formal ending or event. She suggested that all Hosea participants to date might
be invited to the Mass next month during which several children of one Hosea
participant will receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Possibly to be followed by a
small reception. It was suggested that we might schedule an explanation of the
Mass which Fr. Jack previously stated he was willing to do. L. Kwan suggested
the date of Aug.8 for this event and Deacon Kak agreed to do the explanation if
Fr. Jack is unavailable.
L. Kwan
informed us that IHM will not plan to participate in the procession for the
Eucharistic Congress as it will be taking place on Friday . Our buses are
reserved for Saturday only. He pointed out that this schedule would allow a
later departure time from IHM. He also said that participants will be asked to

spread the word.
G. Vettor

Immaculate Heart of Mary Evangelization Commission
Meeting,
June l9, 2006
Room 2, 7PM
Present: Chmn Kwan, Deacon Kak, Coco Thornlow, Betty
Galgoci, Matt Thiel, and Nancy Skee
*****************************************************************************
The meeting was opened with singing Hosea by all and
prayer for Missions read by N. Skee
Minutes were read by N. Skee and corrected by Deacon Kak as
follows: paragraph #10 should read that “the High Point Museum will display
outstanding and/or distinguishing features of various churches in this area
during the month of July and that IHM will be featured five times in the
display.” Minutes were approved as corrected by Coco Thornlow and seconded
by Betty Galgoci.
Deacon Kak read Mark 4:35-41 and those present shared their
reflections on them.
N. Skee reported on the two meetings she attended regarding
Small Christian Communities, namely “Why Catholic?” at the Catholic Conference
Center and “Building Blocks for Christ” at St. Paul. Bishop Jugis was present at
both and stated his hope that all parishes in our diocese would subscribe to the
Renew program (Why Catholic?). The overall aim of the program is to teach
adult Catholics the core beliefs of the church; the anticipated outcome is that
they will then “choose” to be Catholic as opposed to accepting it as an
inheritance from their parents. The small size of the group meetings for this
purpose would allow opportunities to discuss their concerns and get answers to
their questions. Furthermore, small groups provide opportunity for bonding with
other members of the group and foster a sense of community. The program is
offered in Spanish and English and costs about $l800 for both. Participants
would be required to purchase their own texts at about $l0 each. Parishes
would select 8 to 10 recognized leaders in their parish to be trained by Renew
staff and it would take about l8 months for the program to begin its first group
sessions. She stated the opinion that the program could succeed only if the
pastor was enthusiastic about implementing it in his parish.
C. Thornlow gave her impression of sessions of Hosea, which
she attended and expressed her overall support and belief that the program is
effective.
M. Thiel gave critique and evaluation of the Hosea program
that was positive and enthusiastic. He ended by saying that he believes the
program contains a good format and is efficiently organized and implemented.
His only recommendation was that we might want to consider adding some form of
recognition at the end of each session such as presenting participants
with a Bible and perhaps some small celebration..
Deacon Kak suggested that we might end the Hosea sessions
with a mass during which the priest would explain the parts of the mass as they
were taking place perhaps to be followed by a small reception. Such an
event would provide Hosea participants opportunity to
invite their families and friends as well as other parishoners and we might
invite any others wishing to sign up for future Hosea sessions
L. Kwan announced the next session of Hosea will begin on
September 5.
L, Kwan also announced that the organizational meeting for
the new Italian Language class is scheduled for June 2l. He noted that 5
teachers have volunteered and that about 20 people are registered to
participate.
L. Kwan expressed disappointment at the small amount the
International Club collected for our sister parish in Miss. .He said we must
think of a better way to raise these funds at our next event.
The fund raiser event to be sponsored by the International
Club will be called “Mexican Night”, and a small committee will meet next month
to plan the details. Larry will try to arrange a date for the event.
We briefly discussed organizing the Eucharistic Congress
registration and transportation. Buses will be reserved but if we fail to
fill them, we may need to organize a carpool. B. Galgoci pointed out that
parking for car pools could be a problem in Charlotte
The meeting adjourned with “Our Father” and peace hugs.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
May l5, 2006
Present:
Coco Thornlow, Kathy Lucido, Betty Galgoci, Rich Pohlman, Tom Kak, Larry Kwan,
Nancy Cruz, and Nancy Skee
The meeting opened with all
singing “Hosea” and a reading of the “Memorarae” by N. Skee.
Minutes from meeting of
4/17/06 were read by Betty Galgoci. Minutes were approved by R. Pohlman
and seconded by K. Lucido.
Deacon Kak read John
l5:9-17. Reflections on this reading were shared among the group.
Use of signs outside our
church was briefly discussed and it was explained that because we are in a
residential area, we are severely restricted and have to pay the city for
permits.
It was concluded that this
discussion will be resumed after construction of the new facility.
L. Kwan reported on the POD
meeting saying that it was emphasized that the new facility will be shared by
the entire parish including the school. Fr. Jack stated at the meeting that the
school, although a major ministry of our church, is still to be regarded as only
one of our many ministries.
N. Skee will attend the
information session on Small Christian Communities (Why Catholic?) and report to
this commission. N. Skee and Rich Pohlman will both attend the SCC workshop
(Christ’s Building Blocks) at St. Paul. N. Skee will report on that one as well.
because, sad to report, this is Rich’s last meeting with us as he is taking a
one year sabbatical from church volunteer work.
Joyce Korabek asked N.
Skee to express her recommendations for future Hosea presentations at this
meeting since she was unable to attend. They are as follows: We
should present two sessions of 6 to 8 weeks twice each year; one in the Fall and
one in the Spring, preferably during Lent and ending with Easter. She gave the
following justifications: 1) difficulty in finding leaders who will commit to
all 6 or 8 sessions, 2) Need for leaders to have space to refresh themselves
spiritually, 3) Those who might be interested in signing up for the sessions
would not procrastinate if they knew the opportunity is limited, 4) Each group
should have at least 6 participants to accomplish one of the goals of the
program, namely: bonding with each other.
These points were
considered by those present and it was agreed that they have merit.
However, it was concluded that for the present we must proceed with the next
session as publicly scheduled. R. Pohlman will lead the first two sessions.
There was a lengthy discussion and no conclusion as to where the second two
sessions will be held as there are no spaces available here in the church.
Hopefully, that problem will be solved before the second session is held.
Deacon Kak said he will
present highlights of the history of IHM as guest speaker to members of the High
Point Museum Guild on May 17. He reported that IHM merits at least five
notations of distinguishing features and accomplishments, one example being the
stained glass window above our altar.
N. Skee stated that we need
to consider a monetary contribution to the ESL program, especially since our
co-sponsor, St. Mary’s pays for the text books used by the students. This
discussion will continue at a future meeting.
The meeting was adjourned
with one “Our Father” and one “Hail Mary”.

EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING
April 17, 2006
PRESENT: Gilda
Dau Coco Thornlow Joyce Korabek
Rich Pohlman Kathy
Lucido Larry Kwan Betty Galgoci
The meeting was opened with the song of Hosea, sung by all.
Minutes from the meeting of 2/20/06 prepared by Nancy Skee
were read by Betty Galgoci. The Minutes were approved by Rich Pohlman
and seconded by Coco Thornlow.
Joyce Korabek – gave thanks to all who
helped to make the Hosea program successful. She gave special thanks to
Nancy Skee for all the work and support she gave to all.
Our Open House for Hosea was very successful. We had eight sign up for
the program that night and also got a new member for the International Club.
The Hosea group began with six interested women, and at one point one had
to leave and another dropped out. Father Jack came into the last meeting
at 8PM and stayed until 9:20 PM. The meeting was very relaxed and went very
well. It was suggested that maybe instead of 6 weeks, 8 weeks would be better.
Joyce felt that next time we need to do better timekeeping. We did get
stuck on annulments. Two of the girls who attended got a lot of help and one
asked if she could come back for the next session. We also have a man, Scott
Lyons, interested in joining the group. Some of the women expressed
interest in Bible Study.
It
was suggested that we try to get the Hosea group to form a small group to
rekindle their friendships. Perhaps a get together at a place such as Starbucks
or in someone’s home.
Three new sets of dates for the following year were proposed: May 23 – June 27,
Sept. 5 – Oct. 10 and Nov. 14.- Dec. 19 on Tuesday evenings.
Discussion centered on the Renewal given by Fr. Joseph
Zuschmidt and it seems most attendees ‘loved it’. Coco
said people made comments such as ‘it got better and better’. The second night
of the Renewal was for Reconciliation and we had 6 priests hearing
confessions.
The last Stations of the Cross was poorly attended. Approx. 20-25 people
came. Betty Galgoci said that for several years we had the youth perform
the Stations in mime and there was a very good attendance. We
might want to look into that.
Gilda Dau stated that after Easter
there will be Spanish movies for Spanish students and anyone else
interested in learning/improving their Spanish.
Joyce Korabek asked why we have no
signs to advertise our programs posted in front of the church. This has come up
in the past. We are not in a commercial zone and are only allowed put up signs
twice a year. She asked Larry to talk to Father Jack about getting a
marquee sign where we can change messages.
Rich said we can try transmitting a
message on the radio as some Realtors do outside a property for sale. It could
read as ‘For community information turn to channel ____, etc.’
Larry Kwan announced that there is an
International Prayer Dance Group from Haiti to perform at IHM school gym on Sat.
4/29/06. We have been asked to help serve refreshments.
The meeting was closed with a prayer. Our next meeting will be Monday 5/15/06

said that the Charismatic Prayer Group has offered to assist us. She also added
that the International Club was asked to provide soup for the Friday of April 7
during Lent.
N. Skee reported that
Spanish class attendance has dropped but there are numbers that justify 3
separate classes, one being the Advanced class. Gilda Dau announced that she
will begin a monthly Spanish Movie Night to provide additional opportunity for
those who wish to practice use of the language. Nancy reported that the ESL
classes have about 40 adult students and that majority of children attending are
very young, requiring nursery volunteers and that there are adequate volunteers
available for Thursday evenings at IHM School
Chmn Kwan reviewed tasks
assigned last Monday at our special Hosea meeting and reviewed advertising
results. K. Lucido brought a sample of special ID tags she designed for IHM
Hosts.

publicize projects..

original master.
N. Skee will contact J. Korabek with changes to poster and
leaflets as discussed and agreed upon during the meeting Joyce will provide us
with copies that we can take to the printer.
Hosea, RCIA, and Adult Ed will each have a table during the
Open House with a host standing by to answer questions. R. Pohlman suggested
that we display appropriate materials on each table to include some that can be
taken home by guests. We will work on finding sources for and obtaining these
materials.
Rich also suggested that we might present bookmarks with
the Creed printed on them to hand out as favors to guests. K. Lucido will try to
locate a source and price for these.
R. Pohlman will provide sign-in sheets for guests asking
for name, address, phone number and e-mail.and N. Skee will produce a master for

dinner at 5:30; Mass 7PM.
Dec. ll, Fiesta after the 2 PM Mass.
Due to urgency of our need to plan
publicity for the upcoming Hosea program, standing committee reports were
postponed and the remainder of our meeting time was devoted to listing
publicity vehicles, assigning areas to be covered, and joint composition of ads
to be placed. James Leonard will take care of radio and TV ads, Rich Pohlman,
newspaper ads. Joyce Korabek will take care of K of C and Bethany news letters,
and Nancy Skee will take care of all other organizations and church news
letters and bulletins. Joyce will have a poster sample prepared and Larry will

Joyce suggested we use the first Sunday of the month after mass gatherings to
advertise in some way. Joyce will also see that our brochure is amended for Fr.
Jack’s approval to print. Nancy Cruz volunteered to distribute them when
printed.
The question of whether Hosea might be
offered bi-lingually was briefly discussed. It was concluded that would have to
be a separate entity and perhaps a future possibility if the program succeeds.
Meeting adjourned with “Our
Father” and peace hugs.
.
Minutes:
Evangelization Commission - September 19, 2005
The Evangelization Commission met at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church on
September 19, 2005 at 7 PM. Present were: Chmn Kwan, Rich Pohlman, Betty
Galgoci, and Nancy Skee.
The meeting was opened by singing “Hosea” led by Chmn. Kwan
.A prayer for the sick was read by N. Skee in honor of Deacon Kak who is
scheduled to undergo heart surgery October 5..
Minutes of the August meeting were read by N. Skee. Betty
Galgoci moved that the minutes be approved as read and the motion was seconded
by N. Skee.
Chmn Kwan gave instructions as to how the housekeeping
plans for ensuring safety and comfort of those riding buses to the Eucharistic
Con gress on Saturday, the 24 will be carried out. Two members
of this commission will act as hosts and housekeepers on each bus. They will
attend to details such as inspecting the buses for cleanliness before and after
the trip, pass out T-shirts and forms for parents to fill out for their children
who will participate in the K-5 activities. They will devise a means to keep
track of all passengers to assure that all return on the same bus. It is
emphasized that hosts will be able to maintain contact via cell phone between
the 6 AM and the 9 AM
buses.
N. Skee reported that Spanish classes have 42 registered
and that there are sufficient and talented teachers and administrative
assistants for the program. Also, there are sufficient volunteers for the ESL program at the school. We
have a need for money to buy refreshments for those enrolled and volunteering in
the ESL program.
There was a brief discussion of the Hosea program. Two main
points were made . The first point was that we will have to begin regular
meetings beginning next month to plan the program and that publicity will be a
major facet of the program. To this end, R. Pohlman agreed to write and article
for the next Heart to Heart publication to which Joyce and Nancy will add if
necessary.Launch date for the program is Feb 2l, 2006 and Kat Manzella has
agreed to speak and Tom Burke will conduct a tour of the church.
The meeting was adjourned with the “Our Father” and peace
hugs.
Minutes: Evangelization Commission
–Aug. l5,2005
The Evangelization Commission met
at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on August l5, 2005 at 7 PM. Present were Fr.
Jack, Deacon Tom, Chmn. Kwan, Coco Thornlow, Betty Galgoci, and Nancy Skee.
The meeting was opened by the
reading of a prayer to our Blessed Mother by Nancy and the recitation of the
Memorarae.
Minutes of the June meeting were
read by N. Skee, and a motion to approve as read was made by C. Thornlow and
seconded by Deacon Kak.
There was a discussion regarding
number signed up for reserved buses for the Eucharistic Congress for September
24. Present numbers indicate that it may be necessary to cancel the third bus
and perhaps substitute a smaller vehicle and driver for the small number who
wish to leave at 2 PM for the Mass only. Reservation deadline is August 23, at
which time a decision will be made.. Father had to attend another meeting and
after expressing his appreciation for the work this commission is doing, left
us.
Deacon Kak read from Matthew
l6:l3-20 which was followed by reflections from those present.
Chmn. Kwan then showed us the
design for the T-shirts to be placed on the front left shoulder and will match
the design of the IHM banner as to color and image. Due to uncertainty of
numbers, we cannot place our order for the shirts before the end of this month.
Nancy will contact Jim Webb with this information and ask him to contact Larry
for the shirt emblem.
Coco reported prices she had
checked regarding snacks for the return trip from Charlotte. It was decided that
we will provide bottled water and a breakfast type bar since there will be no
time allowed for nourishment before boarding buses for the return trip
Chmn. Kwan reported that he has
reserved calendar and facility space for the Hosea program. He informed us that
a problem exists for the first session which is scheduled for the same evening
as the Mardi Gras celebration and the only meeting space available will be the
choir room which we agreed is not appropriate. It was decided that we
prayerfully consider options before our next meeting.
.N. Skee reported that she had
met with Spanish teachers and is trying to arrange for class spaces at the
Church. She will attend a meeting with other agencies involved in the ESL
program this week.
The meeting ended with Our Father
and peace hugs.
Minutes: Evangelization Commission -
June 20, 2005
The Evangelization Commission met at
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on June 20, 2005 at 7 PM. Present were: Chairman
Kwan, Nancy Cruz, Rich Pohlman, Coco Thornlow, Joyce Korabek, Kathy Lucido and
Nancy Skee.
The meeting was opened with a prayer
of St. John Neuman read by Chmn Kwan.
Minutes of the previous meeting were
read by N. Skee. Typing errors were corrected and Chmn. Kwan corrected that
Deacon Kak’s report that there was no response to his offering of Coffee Time Q
& A meant that The HP Enterprise failed to print his ad and did not mean that
there was no response and was seconded by Coco Thornlow.
Nancy Cruz read Mt. 10: 26-33.
Reflections on the reading were offered by those present.
Chmn. Kwan reported on progress
of plans for IHM participation in the Eucharistic Congress in Charlotte on
September 24, 2005. He asked each of us to spread the word to various
organizations within the parish that they should get their reservations in
before the invitation is extended to the parish at large. Joyce Korabek
suggested that we might have a sign up table after weekend masses if all seats
on buses are not filled . Chmn. Kwan suggested that we check on the
feasibility of purchasing matching T-shirts for IHM members who attend the
conference as we will march as representatives of our parish identified by a
banner. Joyce will check on T-shirts that were purchased by Bethany as to
number, price, and availability. Coco agreed to contact Carla Ballesteros to
publish and promote the event in Spanish for our Hispanic members, emphasizing
that the celebration will be bi-lingual
Joyce Korabek explained the
outline she has created to encourage the return of inactive Catholics. We were
asked to come up with a name for the program. Joyce and Larry agreed to get
appointment to meet with Fr. Tony to discuss the idea for the program and to ask
for suggestions before submitting it to Fr. Jack for his consideration.
Nancy S. reported that
classrooms have been reserved at IHM School to resume the Family Literacy
Program (ESL) beginning September l5. She is in need of volunteers to provide
and serve refreshments at each of the sessions. She plans to meet with Spanish
volunteer teachers to plan a series of classes on the new campus for the fall.
The meeting was closed with Our
Father and peace hugs.
Minutes: Evangelization Commission -
THE
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION met at 7 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on May
16, 2005. Present were Chmn. Kwan, Deacon Kak, Joyce Korabek, Coco Thornlow,
and Nancy Skee.
The meeting
opened with the “Our Father” and Deacon Kak read John 3:16 which was followed by
reflections by those present.
Minutes of
the previous meeting were unavailable. Thus, we began with a review of the
First Annual International Festival. It was generally agreed that the event was
a success with an estimated attendance of about 500, many of whom expressed
their pleasure and a wish to hold it again next year. We were awed by the
performances of the volunteer entertainers and the exhibits were outstanding.
The only complaint was in regard to food. The designated 5:30 PM as dinner time
did not suit those who were hungry when the festivities began. Next time, at
least snacks and beverages will be available before the formal dinner begins.
Also, we will compose a thank you letter to those who contributed talent, food
and exhibits and ask Fr. Jack to sign them. Chmn Kwan said that he invited Rita
Leonard to the next Parish Council meeting in order to inform everyone about the
International Club in hopes or encouraging participation.
Nancy Skee
reported that we will resume ESL classes at IHM School on September 15. She has
requested help with snacks for the 8 week program from Bethany, but has not
received an answer yet. She also said that an 8 week series of Spanish classes
will be offered at the Skeet Club location beginning in September.
Deacon Kak
reported no response to his offer of a coffee time discussion hour. Thus, the
project is abandoned.
Chmn Kwan elaborated on plans for
the Eucharistic Congress in Charlotte on September 23 and 24. He has reserved 3
busses, each with 56 seats and it will be our goal to fill all three. We will
begin taking reservations for these seats in July at a low $5.00 each, leaving
IHM at 6 AM on Saturday, September 24 and returning after 5 PM. There will be
noteworthy speakers, parades of parishes throughout the diocese as well as
performances by choirs from around the diocese. The entire program will be
bi-lingual and we will inform our Spanish speaking members of this opportunity.
Joyce
Korabek reported that she has completed and outline for our proposed program for
returning inactive Catholics. She will meet with N. Skee and they will submit
and outline to other members of this Commission and a date to review them with
Fr. Tony will be set in the near future. It is hoped that if approved by Fr.
Jack, we will begin the program this Fall.
The meeting
was adjourned with “Hail Mary” and Peace Hugs.
The Evangelization Commission met at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church at 7 PM on March 2l, 2005. Present were: Chmn. Kwan, Deacon Kak,
Joyce Korabek, Betty Galgoci, and Nancy Skee.
The meeting was opened with prayer by Chmn. Kwan. Minutes
of the last meeting were read by N. Skee. Chmn. Kwan appointed Deacon Kak to
approve the minutes and it was seconded by N. Skee.
Chmn. Kwan asked who would be attending the workshop on
Small
Christian Communities in Hickory on April l6. N. Skee, L.
Kwan, and B. Galgoci agreed to attend. R. Pohlman and N..Cruz had previously
agree d to attend.
Chmn. Kwan stated that we need to have some of our IHM
website .information translated to Spanish. N. Skee said she would follow up on
this. L. Kwan said Fr. Jack had designated someone to translate the letter of
invitation to the pizza party for newcomers.
Deacon Kak read John 20:l-9 and those present offered
reflections on the reading.
L. Kwan reported on Eucharistic Congress in Charlotte on
September 23-24. Thus far, our responsibility includes publicity and arranging
transportation. Details will be reported as he receives them.
J. Korabek reported that she is still working on an outline
for group meetings to attract returning Catholics. She will seek advice and
suggestions from Fr. Tony before submitting the plan for Fr. Jack’s
consideration. Target date for implementing the program, if approve, would be
September or October.
Deacon Kak and N. Skee reported on the ESL program in
progress. Both agree the program needs fine-tuning. Deacon Tom said that the
students need to be able to take the textbooks home with them instead of having
to rely on take-home materials created by the teacher. J. Korabek said that the
children are not bringing in homework and therefore, we need to provide
appropriate learning games to fill the 6-8:30 time. N. Skee pointed out that
this is a first time experience for all of us, including GTCC. N. Skee said she
will bring these suggestions to the next meeting of the coordinators.
The meeting was ended with the Our Father and peace hugs.
Next meeting is scheduled on April 18 at Room 2 @7pm
February 2l, 2005
The Evangelization Commission met at Immaculate Heart of
Mary church at 7 PM on Feb. 2l, 2005. Present were: Fr. Jack. Deacon Kak, Chmn.
Kwan, Kathy Lucido, Nancy Cruz, Coco Thornlow, and Nancy Skee.
The meeting opened with singing of “Christ Be Our Light”
and a choral reading of “The Eucharistic Prayer”.
Fr. Jack spoke to us about his vision of future expansion
of our church and school on the new campus. He emphasized the urgency to enlarge
and create space based on the projected increase in population in this area, in
turn, based on the creation of new businesses in the area; consequently
resulting in an increase of parish members. He asked us to consider the future
needs and be prepared to offer input regarding what, when, and how to prepare
for this inevitable future need.
Deacon Kak read John 4:5-42. Those present offered
reflections on the reading.
N. Skee read the minutes of the previous meeting. L. Kwan
corrected the spelling of Diane Jakubson’s name. Deacon Kak moved that the
minutes be approved as corrected and was seconded by K. Lucido.
N. Skee reported that comments regarding the Spanish
Anniversary Fiesta have been favorable. However, it would have been considered a
greater success had the number of Anglos among the gathering of nearly 300 been
larger.
L. Kwan reported that the weekend retreat was a success in
regard to numbers in attendance. The Friday evening session was somewhat
disorganized and less inspiring than the Saturday morning session which received
very positive response from those present. N. Cruz commented that the content
of the Spanish presentation was good but felt that the presentation fell short
of expectations. C. Thornlow concurred in her evaluation.
There was a discussion of R. Pohlman’s suggestion that some
of our members attend the workshops by the Diocesan Resource Team for Small
Christian Communities. Several of our members agreed to attend the meeting at
St. Aloysius in Hickory. C. Thornlow will invite members from the Hispanic
Council to attend and provide them with the details.
N. Skee said that J. Korabek called to report that she is
still working on the study outline for “Return to Faith” project. She wants
input from our members before completing the outline for Fr. Jack’s
consideration.
N. Skee reported that she had attended the Newcomer dinner.
Only three new families were present and Fr. Jack was able to visit briefly with
each of them. The arrangement of Room 3 with fresh flowers on the tables and a
nice presentation of food and drink made the event a pleasant experience unlike
the previous party when the crowded condition made it awkward to socialize. Each
family expressed interest in becoming active members of the parish. C. Thornlow
offered to translate the invitation letter to new parishoners into Spanish. N.
Skee said she would contact Keith Davis with her offer.
N. Skee reported that attendance at Spanish classes at the
school has been poor, and that the Basic course has been cancelled and some have
transferred to the Intermediate class which has l5 students enrolled. She said
that when classes are offered this Fall, they must be relocated to the church.
ESL classes are still undergoing the first experience
syndrome, but approaching a working rhythm. 3l adults are receiving instruction
in English while 29 of their children are being tutored in their homework or
cared for in nursery. As soon as GTCC is able to provide another teacher, the
adult class will be split into two ability levels. T. Kak, a volunteer classroom
assistant, commented that he is favorably impressed with the skill of the
teacher he is working with and with the level of achievement by the students in
a short period of time.. We still need more volunteers for Thursday evenings
which we host.
L. Kwan reported that the International Club is getting off
to a slow start, but that we have at least five countries that volunteers will
represent at our First Annual International Festival on Pentecost Sunday. N.
Cruz said that the Hispanic group is planning a Pentecost vigil beginning with a
mass at 7 PM on May l4. It will be entirely in Spanish unless we can find
someone to translate into English and prepare a program.
L. Kwan said that Fr. Jack has asked our commission to
organize participation in the Eucharistic Congress in Charlotte this September.
He will provide us with details as he receives them.
The Evangelization Commission met at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church on January l7, 2005 at 7 PM. Present were: Chairman L. Kwan, Deacon Kak, R. Pohlman, K. Lucido, J. Korabek, and N. Skee.
The meeting opened with a prayer for vocations read by J.
Korabek.
Minutes of the November meeting were read by N. Skee.
After correction of grammatical error in paragraph #8 and time correction in
paragraph #4 by L. Kwan.(Ammended to say that designated Hispanic communicator
should check the IHM website on Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning
instead of Wednesday morning) J. Korabek moved that minutes be approved as
corrected and was seconded by T. Kak.
Deacon Kak read Matt 4:l2-23, followed by reflections and
comments by each of those in attendance, ending with reciting “Our Father”.
L. Kwan reported that Bethany Society will share expenses
of “Ministering from our Deepest Wounds” Retreat with the Evangelization
Commission on the English session and the Evangelization Commission will be the
sole sponsor for the Spanish session. Young at Heart will furnish the Friday
refreshment, Bethany will provide breakfast for Saturday morning and Childcare
if needed. Our Evangelization Commission will take care of the Saturday lunch.
It will be most urgent to assure that we will get sufficient response from the
Hispanic community in order to make it economically feasible to offer the
retreat in both languages. N. Skee said that she will contact the Hispanic
community and explain that it will be imperative that we obtain prior commitment
to attend the Spanish retreat before we can determine whether to offer the
retreat in both languages.. Deacon Kak offered to advertise the retreat in the
High Point Enterprise. L. Kwan said that he had asked Diane Jakubsin to try to
reach area Catholic churches with notices of the retreat. A flyer will be
placed in the IHM bulletin this weekend.
N. Skee reported that plans for the Spanish Anniversary
Fiesta are going well. A flyer was placed in the bulletin last weekend. She
said that we need to do as much as we can to encourage attendance. J. Korabek
said she would mention it at Bethany meeting. N. Skee has asked the boy scouts
for help in set-up and clean-up and has been assured by Don Davenport that we
can count on their help.
R. Pohlman passed out info sheets about a workshop in
Hickory at St. Aloysius Church on April l6. He suggested that we consider
attending as the topics are about Small Christian Communities. It was agreed
that we might benefit from this workshop and therefore, will resume the
discussion at our next meeting.. Rich also suggested that our commission be
provided with distinctive name tags to wear during attendance at workshops and
meetings outside our parish. L. Kwan said he would look into this..
L. Kwan explained that the scheduled series of small
group prayer meetings scheduled for members of this commission have been
postponed due to the crowded calendars of our members who wear a number of hats
and unable to find a schedule that will not conflict with our members’
schedules.. The series will be rescheduled at a later date to be announced.
N. Skee reported that Spanish Class registration is
underway and that teachers are committed to eight Thursday night sessions
beginning Jan. 27, 2005 at the IHM School. She also reported that plans for
beginning the ESL program at the same time and space are in the works, but
details are yet be determined as coordination involves a number of other
agencies: besides IHM Church and School. They are St. Mary’s Episcopal Church,
Guilford Technical College, Catholic Social Services Hispanic Center, and
volunteers from each of these as well as from High Point University and the
Wesleyan Academy.
J.. Korabek reported that she had no time over the
holidays to work on her program for “Returning Catholics” but will try to have a
report for the next meeting..
L. Kwan reported that the newly forming IHM International
Club has pledged their help to our commission in celebrating Pentecost with
International event. Thus far, we have five people who will organize groups to
present food and entertainment typical of the countries they represent.
The meeting was
adjourned with a recitation of “Hail Mary” and exchange of peace hugs
The Evangelization Commission met at 7 PM at Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church on November l5, 2004. Present were: Chmn. Kwan, Rich
Pohlman, Kathy Lucido, Joyce Korabek, and Nancy Skee.
The meeting was opened by listening to a bilingual
meditative CD furnished by R. Pohlman, followed by the reading of an
Evangelization prayer by N. Skee.
N. Skee read minutes of last meeting. J. Korabek corrected
spelling of her name and then moved that the minutes be approved. K. Lucido
seconded the motion.
N. Skee reported that she had spoken with a member of the
Hispanic council and passed along our suggestion that they appoint a bilingual
member to check with Pat each week to retrieve articles to be translated for the
Spanish bulletin. L. Kwan suggested that this job might be accomplished more
efficiently if the designated person would check the IHM website on Wednesday
mornings.
N. Skee said that one committee meeting had taken place to
plan the anniversary celebration of the Spanish Mass and other meetings are
scheduled. The main area of concern is finding ways to encourage the Anglos to
participate in this celebration.
L. Kwan reported that he had been in contact with Family
Life in regard to providing transportation to mass for those who need the
service. Family Life will attempt to establish the need for this service and
will get help from our commission in establishing and operating this service if
the need exists.
Although our members felt that our pilot trial at
establishing Small Community Prayer Groups fell short of our expectations,
R.Pohlman encouraged us to try again. Thus, we set the dates for our next trial
as follows: Jan l0, 24. 3l; Feb 7, l4, 28 and Pot Luck, TBA The location for
the meetings will be Skee’s home and we will use readings from the following
Sunday Mass for discussion and inspiration.
Due to absence of Deacon Kak we lacked information need
to confirm plans to carry out a group activity inspired by our prayer
meetings. Namely, the project will be a joint service to the Free Clinic,
which will probably require us to seek volunteers outside our commission
members.
L. Kwan reported that we are waiting to hear whether the
Bethany Society will co-sponsor the b-lingual.
Retreat tentatively scheduled for the weekend before Lent.
Feb 4 and 5 (Ministering from our Deepest Wounds}.
N. Skee reported that she had condensed all information
regarding the Torch and Banner celebration by the Hispanic and passed it along
for bulletin notices and a flier as well as other publications and our bulletin
boards. One of the main objectives here was to inform the community of the
significance of this event and to encourage participation.
J. Korabek presented an outline of her ideas for a program
to attract inactive Catholics. She will schedule a meeting of several of our
members to “flesh out” her plan. When in place, she offered to lead the
program.
N. Skee said that both Spanish and English classes are
scheduled to begin on Jan 27.2005. She has been in contact with Catholic Social
Services who are willing to help with the program.
Due to the time discussion of International Club and
Pentecost Celebration were tabled and the meeting was adjourned with the Our
Father and exchange of Peace.

EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH
October 18, 2004
THE
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION met at 7 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on
October l8, 2004. Present were Chmn. Kwan, Deacon Kak, Rich Pohlman, Nancy
Cruz, Coco Thornlow, Don Adviento, Kathy Lucido, Joyce Korabek, and Nancy Skee.
Joyce
Korabeck was introduced and welcomed as a new member of this commission. The
meeting was opened with singing the Prayer of St. Francis and a reading of a
“Prayer to Mary, Patroness of Our Land” by Don Adviento.
Nancy Skee
read the minutes from the last meeting. Motion to approve was made by Deacon
Kak and seconded by Rich Pohlman.
Chmn. Kwan
said he passed along our suggestions for Stewardship Weekend and for the New
Parishioner party. It was decided that our commission would act on one of our
suggestions by attempting to find a coordinator from the Hispanic community to
help with providing translations for invitations and other information as well
as to have at least one bi-lingual person present after each mass on Stewardship
weekend next year.
Coco
Thornlow asked about combining the Spanish bulletin with the English one. The
discussion that followed concluded that until the Hispanic number of
parishioners reaches a greater number, it would not be economically feasible.
Meanwhile, it was decided that we will attempt to locate a volunteer translator
to coordinate with Pa Evans in selecting important information to be translated
and included in the Spanish bulletin.
Chmn. Kwan
said he has contacted David Rathburn of the ministry of the sick and home bound
of the Family Life Commission and they have agreed to work with our commission
to establish a committe to provide transportation to mass for those who need the
service. Currently there is a plan to determine what needs exist for this
service.
Our Small
Christian Community Prayer group has decided to choose the Free Health Clinic as
their service project. Specific actions will be discussed. Meanwhile, we are
making plans for the Pot Luck on November l2 at 7 PM in the Gathering Space.
Rich Pohlman will plan and provide a program. Deacon Kak will prepare written
invitations to all known prayer groups in our community. However, a general
invitation will be extended to all through the bulletins.
Deacon Kak
said that his report on Lutheran-Catholic Covenant Committee and 200 years of
Catholic Presence in High Point had been deleted due to lack of interest.
Chmn. Kwan said that Ms. Bednar
called to say she has obtained sponsorship for Young at Heart for the
Ministering from our Deepest Wounds retreat. Larry said we need a third sponsor
to insure good participation, preferably a large group such as Bethany. Joyce
Korabek said she would try to win their support for this bi-lingual retreat.
However, it was decided that February (weekend before Ash Wednesday) would be
better as our commission will be greatly involved with the anniversary
celebration of the Spanish mass in January..
Nancy Skee
said that Fr. Jack does not believe a bi-lingual mass is feasible for the
anniversary celebration. Also, he feels that the most appropriate time for the
celebration is following the Spanish mass. A meeting is scheduled for October
20 with a joint committee of the Hispanic and Anglos to plan for the event.
We are
still waiting for an answer from administration as to where we might best
display our beautiful Welcome Visitor cards. Until we get final word on this,
Rich Pohlman suggested that we will put them at the table at the side entrance
and we might place a few cards near the Holy Water fountain on weekends.
Deacon Kak
and Nancy Cruz discussed plans for a bi-lingual Benediction service. They will
continue this discussion at a later time.
Nancy
Skee said she had received a large packet of information from the Hispanic
Community about the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Torch and Banner
events. We discussed ways in which the entire community might become involved in
these celebrations. It was decided that we would try to inform the community of
the significance of these celebrations and encourage participation. Nancy said
she will try to condense the information she received to be included in Heart to
Heart and to include in our bulletin as a flyer.
Joyce
Korabek gave a glowing testimonial to the benefits she received from
participating in the Landings program. She agreed to plan a program based on
her knowledge and experience to be offered in our parish. When complete, she
will submit it to Fr. Jack for his consideration.
To be
discussed at next meeting: l. Spanish and English classes, 2. Pentecost
International Celebration, and 3. International Club
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH
September 20, 2004
THE EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION met at 7
PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on September 20, 2004. Present were:
Chairman Kwan, Deacon Kak, Rich Pohlman; Betty Galgocci, Don Adviento, Nancy
Skee.
Angeles “Coco” Thornlow was to have
been welcomed as a new member of this commission, introduced as our bilingual
connection with the Hispanic community. Family obligations kept her absent
from this meeting. However, she did attend the Hispanic meeting last month and
reported that she was well received. She said that they asked when their
weekly bulletin will be combined with the English one.
The meeting was opened by singing
“Faith of Our Fathers”, followed by a choral reading of The Evangelization
Prayer. Minutes were read by N. Skee; motion to approve by B.Galgocci and
seconded by D. Adviento.
Nancy Skee reported on the newcomer
pizza party. The discussion that followed resulted in some suggestions for
future parties for newcomers:
Since the
event was well attended, it might more comfortable to be held in
the
Gathering Space..
Suggest
all commissions and organizations send representatives to the party, Perhaps
wearing name tags with designations of the group they represent so that
newcomers might seek them out to answer questions concerning that area of
interest.
A
designated host should welcome the new people and ask them to individually
introduce themselves and mention something about themselves.
Perhaps
some type of game to cause people to talk to each other would help.
Stewardship
information booklets, etc. might be handed out.
A polaroid
shot of individuals or families with name, address, and phone numbers and
with permission, posted on the bulletin board after the party.
Invitations
translated into Spanish should be sent to Hispanic newcomers.
There was a discussion of the
Stewardship Fair. Members who participated reported scant results. There was
a consensus that the format of the fair be changed or combined with another
event such as the Parish picnic or pizza party.
One suggestion was made that might
result in more response would be to offer a prize or prizes by drawing. Each
commission and organization would hand out a free ticket for the drawing to
each one who seeks information at their station.
Information at each station should be
available in Spanish and a bi-lingual person should be at each station.
Anniversary of Spanish Mass
Celebration: R. Pohlman suggested that if we could put the party between the
ll:.30 and 2:00 PM Mass, it would improve attendance. He further suggested
that if both of those Masses were bi-lingual it might be an added attraction. It
was agreed that N. Skee would present this suggestion to Fr. Jack. The date for
the celebration is January 23, 2005.
Deacon Kak suggested that we might
ask the Hispanic community if we might join them in celebrating the feast of
Our Lady of Guadalupe on December l2,since she is patroness of the Americas. R.
Pohlman suggested we confer with the Spanish community to obtain information
that we might offer as a flier in the bulletin to increase knowledge and
appreciation of the Lady and the Hispanic culture. N. Skee will look into this
.
Deacon Kak said he is prepared to lead
our pilot program of Small Christian Community Prayer group meetings to begin
on October l at Skee’s home. Betty Galgocci suggested that we invite several
bi-lingual members from the existing Hispanic prayer group, N. Skee agreed
to issue the invitations.
Ministering from our Deepest Wounds
retreat discussed at the last meeting : L. Kwan reported that he had not heard
from Ms. Bednar whether she was able to obtain co-sponsors for us.
Co-sponsorship would increase participation and put it within our budget, since
making it a bi-lingual retreat would increase the cost. The topic is tabled
until we hear from Ms. Bednar.
The newly printed Welcome Visitor
cards were admired and a discussion of where we will display them. We will
consult with Anne Marie about this.
Due to the late hour, other items on
the agenda will be discussed at the next meeting:
Deacon Kak-200 years of Catholic
presence in High Point; N. Skee –on Spanish classes and Basic English classes
for Hispanics; Kwan – International Family Festival and International Club.
EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH
August 16, 2004
The Evangelization Commission met at
7 PM in room 2 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on August l6, 2004. Present
were Chmn. Kwan, Deacon Kak, Nancy Cruz, Betty Galgoci, Nancy Skee, and Don
Adviento.
Our guest, Loretta Bednar, proposed
that we might jointly sponsor a retreat with two or more other parish
organizations (i.e., Young at Heart, Bethany). The retreat that Ms . Bednar
has put together is based on Francis DeSales and Henry Nouwen and is titled
“Ministering from our Deepest Wounds”.
The meeting was opened by a choral
reading of the Salve Regina prayer and a reading of Luke l4:7-l4 by Nancy Skee.
After a brief shared reflection on the reading, Ms. Bednar’s proposal was
discussed with the following comments:
l.
We should consider a joint sponsorship as the
$250.00 shared with 2 or more other organizations would be within our budget.
2.
If we do the retreat, it should be offered in both
English and Spanish (Ms. Bednar indicated this might be possible)
3.
A suggested time for the retreat would be January 2l
and 22 (The time would be 7-9 PM on Friday and continue on Saturday 9-l and
conclude with lunch)
4.
Because of the subject of the retreat, it might well
serve as a community outreach and evangelization tool.
Chmn. Kwan suggested that our
commission be represented at the party for new parishoners on Aug. 2l. Nancy
Skee volunteered to attend.
Ideas for decorating our table for
Stewardship Sunday were discussed and presiders will be : 530 Mass- Larry, 730
– Don, 930- Don, ll30 – Nancy S.
It was suggested that next year we
will need to include the 2 PM Mass. This would make it necessary to create
information in Spanish to hand out.. It was also suggested that letters inviting
new parishoners to the pizza party should be in the Spanish language.
Larry will pass these suggestions to
appropriate committees and offer help.
A suggestion was made that we try to
recruit a member of long standing in our community to serve on the
Evangelization commission who might also attend the monthly Hispanic meeting
to serve as liaison. This person would need to be bi-lingual.
A party to celebrate the one year
anniversary of our union with the Hispanic community was discussed. It was
suggested that the party be scheduled following evening mass on Saturday,
January 29 in order to involve the maximum number in attendance. Also,
evening would be more appropriate to type of food and entertainment discussed
prior to this meeting.
May l5, Pentecost Sunday, is the date
we have reserved for the INTERNATIONAL FAMILY FEST. A committee will soon be
sought to plan and execute it. Co-chairs are Larry and Nancy S.
Nancy S. obtained three estimates
from printers to produce invitation cards for visitors at our church. Designs
and formats were presented and one was chosen. We will order 500 from Crown
Printing .
The Small Christian Community idea
submitted by Rich Pohlman was taken up in a meeting with Fr. Jack and
several of our commission members. Subsequently, we held an informal meeting
in July to discuss Father’s suggestion that we begin the project on a small
and experimental scale. It was decided that we will begin meeting at Skee’s
home with commission members only and each will invite one guest. Deacon Tom
will be our leader and will base the exercises on the Sunday Gospels. The
meetings will begin on Friday, Oct l and meet for 6 consecutive Fridays ,
concluding with a potluck on Nov. l2.
The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer and
exchange of peace. EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION

Larry
Kwan - Led the opening song “Let There Be Peace on Earth followed by the
opening prayer.
Reading
of John 17:20-26 was read by Kathy Lucido - followed by a discussion of
the reading.
Integration of 2 evangelization commissions was addressed and Nancy Cruz
was introduced. She is representing our Spanish Community and is working on
getting the two commissions together as one.
Rich
Pohlman outlined a program with the theme, “Celebration of the Fullness of
Life, Bring in the Holy Sprit.”
The
objective would be the blending of the two communities into one church
concept.
The
introduction of the program would have to start 6 weeks before to get
leaders signed up (middle of August). We could begin with a mass and a speaker
to present the program. Facilitators would be trained and with their group
would determine what night to use and whose home would be open to the group.
The meetings would begin with prayers in the home and neighbors and friends
would be invited to participate. These meetings would take place over a period
of 6 weeks. On the seventh week there would be a meeting with the parish and a
covered dish supper.
Timing
- This would begin the first Friday in October after the 6 weeks are completed -
before Thanksgiving.

Evangelization
Commission
April 19, 2004
Minutes
The
twenty-seventh meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church was held April 19th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of
the church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in
singing “Now Thank We All Our God.” Members present were Deacon Fred
Scarletto, Nancy Skee, Kathy Lucido, Betty Galgoci, Larry Kwan, Nancy Cruz, Rich
Pohlman, SFO and Jim Hoyng. Everyone read the Respect for Life Prayer together
to open the meeting.
Deacon
Fred read from Acts of the Apostles, which was followed by a brief discussion.
Nancy Skee read the minutes of the March 15th meeting. A
MOTION to approve was made by Rich Pohlman, with a second by Deacon
Fred, and was passed unanimously.
Nancy Skee
reported on the restrictions by the City of High Point on our use of a banner,
since we’re in a residential zoning area. Rich Pohlman suggested that the
banner be reserved for special events involving the community. Deacon Fred
reported that the Communication Commission will coordinate any future use of
banners.
Deacon
Fred noted that the bulletin insert has been running for several months now with
only one inquiry. We are still looking forward to a better response from the
inactive Catholics attending the Easter services. In order to avoid litter, the
use of card inserts for the songbooks was discouraged. Nancy Cruz wished that
we had a card that we could carry around with us to hand out if the need arose.
Kathy Lucido thought that the funeral holy card style would be most useful. Jim
Hoyng will check with Ron Horton about printing some for our use.
Deacon
Fred brought materials from the Association of the New Covenant pertaining to
evangelization. He emphasized that there is much more to do in the Catholic
Church in the area of evangelization

than
bringing back inactive Catholics. Nancy Cruz read the Mission Statement for her
group as “To reach those baptized and unbaptized.” Larry Kwan noted that other
groups in our church are working on topics that are evangelization in nature,
but the only area no one else is dealing with is “inactive Catholics.” Deacon
Fred said that he felt our greatest success would be in sharing our stories with
others and contacting people personally. We have to be willing to spread the
gospel.
In the
area of “Sharing the Gospel”, Rich felt we could use the Parish Renewal during
Lent to draw other members of the community. Deacon Fred cautioned about how
the middle day of reconciliation might have a negative impact on non-Catholics.
He suggested that we might have better luck with a day of renewal (revival or
crusade). Rich explained that “Renew” is a packaged program, which is a
kick-off for small Christian communities in someone’s home. Larry asked Nancy
Skee to review Rich’s materials on “Renew”.
Nancy Skee
says that the attendance of May’s Spanish Classes will be light because of the
timing Spring Furniture Market. The teachers however are very enthusiastic.
Larry asked how we wanted to work with Nancy Cruz’s Hispanic Evangelization
Commission. Nancy said that it is hard to get church commitment from Mexican
community whose goal here is to make money to send home. She noted that they
have planned a retreat (all in Spanish) for June 4th & 5th.
Both Deacon Fred and Nancy Cruz will do articles for the next issue of Heart to
Heart.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, May 17th, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church.
Evangelization Commission
March 15, 2004
Minutes
The 26th Meeting of the
Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was held March 15
at 7:00 P.M. in Meeting Room #2 of the Church. Members present were Chairman
Larry Kwan, Deacon Kak, Rich Pohlman, Don Adviento, Betty Galgoci, Kathy Lucido,
and Nancy Skee.
Chairman Kwan led in singing “For the
Beauty of the Earth.” To open the meeting, all read aloud together the Anima
Christi as suggested by Rich Pohlman.
In the absence of Jim Hoyng, Nancy
Skee read the minutes of the Feb. 16 meeting. Motion to approve by Don Adviento,
and seconded by Betty Galgoci.
Nancy Skee reported as follows on
banner situation: (The information was obtained by telephone from Donna Flowers
<883-3345> zoning enforcement officer for the City of High Point, Inspections
Division, Local Codes Section). Banners may be displayed for 15 days at a time
for a maximum of 3 times per calendar year. A $40.oo permit is required for each
period which can be obtained in Room 315 (Third Floor) at City Hall. When City
Council meets in May they will vote on a proposed change which is that banners
may be displayed 2 times in a calendar year for 30 days maintaining the $40.oo
permit fee for each of the two periods. These rules are in effect even if the
banner is attached to the building. Only one permanent sign is permitted for
each street location and may not exceed 24 square feet in size and may not be
internally lighted. Floodlights are permitted. These codes apply to all
residential city locations.
Chairman Kwan reported on meeting with
Deacon Fred regarding invitation to inactive Catholics and others. The
invitation appeared in the church bulletin the first weekend in March and
will continue for three to six months when results will be evaluated and a
decision made regarding its continuation. R. Pohlman suggested that Deacon
Fred and Nancy keep an accurate count of all calls in direct response to the
bulletin insert. Nancy agreed to contact Deacon Fred with this reminder.
Chairman Kwan discussed another
matter taken up during meeting with the Deacon: the printing and distribution
of post-card invitations to inactive Catholics and others. In the absence of
Deacon Fred, we did not know whether this project had been approved. There was
a discussion of how, when, and where such cards might be distributed. Jim Hoyng
previously agreed to place cards in the covers of Missalettes for funerals and
weddings, as well as for Christmas and Easter masses. Drawbacks here were, time
involved and litter.

2004)
Don Adviento suggested that we place
cards in portable racks at both entrances during weekend masses, and stored
after the final Sunday mass. Racks would hold only the invitation cards and a
small sign attracting attention. R. Pohlman and Chairman Kwan said they would
design and produce a sample rack to present to Father Jack for his approval.
Deacon Tom suggested that we print the church address on the other side to make
it convenient to stamp and mail in. It was also suggested that the church email
address be included on the front of the card. Other suggestions to distribute
the cards included: placing them in packages for High Point university students,
having them available during inter-faith weeks, and in Welcome-Wagon packages.
Chairman Kwan said that he would
explore the possibility of a web-page invitation, perhaps to include “ ten good
reasons to be Catholic”.
N. Skee reported approval to schedule
a four week session of Basic and Intermediate Spanish in May. The classes would
be from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. instead of 7:00 to 8:30.
Discussion of Jim Hoyng’s suggestion
to use Parish Renewal as an Evangelization opportunity was as follows: Deacon
Kak said that Penitential Rite on the second night would be a deterrent to this
idea as confession time would create a void for non-participants. R. Pohlman
said that non-participants might be invited to spend either a few minutes
talking with a confessor or be invited to a special prepared session and/or
question and answer time in the Cry Room or another area outside the sanctuary.
Deacon Kak said that Renewal for 2005 will feature a musical group in order to
attract more young people.
R. Pohlman reported no success in
contacting Marilyn Deering to discuss how to involve newly-registered
parishioners in established FISH groups. Apparently she does not answer her
phone or return messages.
There was a brief informal discussion
on the need for additional activities to integrate the new Hispanic members of
the community with the rest of the community. Don Adviento suggested that we
invite a member of the new Hispanic community to serve on our commission. N.
Skee promised to follow-up on this suggestion.
The meeting closed promptly at 9:00
P.M. with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace. The next meeting will be
April 19 at 7:00 in Meeting Room 2 of the church.
Evangelization
Commission
February 16, 2004
Minutes
The
twenty-fifth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church was held February 16th at 7:05 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2
of the church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in
singing “Open Wide the Door to Christ.” Members present were Deacon Tom Kak,
Don Adviento, Betty Galgoci, Larry Kwan, and Jim Hoyng. Everyone read the
Renewal Prayer together to open the meeting.
Betty
Galgoci read from the gospel, which was scheduled for next Sunday. Jim Hoyng
read the minutes of the January 19th meeting. A MOTION
to approve was made by Betty Galgoci, with a second by Don Adviento and was
passed unanimously.
Betty
reported on the proposed change in banner for the entrance way to the church
property. The banner would read “Please Stop In For a Moment of Prayer” in
twelve-inch (12”) letters. The basic cost would be $113.85 and increase to
$136.35 if other colors were used. Jim questioned what the hours of operation
would be and Deacon Tom noted that paper signs would have to be placed on the
doors to the church with directions to the doors that would be unlocked and the
hours that the church would be available. Betty also presented cost information
on cards that could be placed in Song Books for individuals interested in
joining or returning to our church. The wording would be the same as will begin
running in the bulletin in March. Three thousand (3,000) cards will cost
$128.65 for one side or $156.38 for two sided. Costs for four thousand (4,000)
would be $158.40 and $189.55 respectively. Jim suggested that, if we decide on
two sided cards, the Mission Statement be placed on the reverse.
Larry
questioned if Mel Gibson’s “Passion” movie could have an impact on the mission
of evangelization. Deacon Tom said that he would see if we could get media
coverage for the Stations of the Cross that would be

several Fridays during Lent. He also reported that almost forty people were
still attending the Spanish Classes as of February 19th. The plan is
to offer continuing classes, three times a year, skipping the summer period.
Jim noted for Fostering Gospel Values that the next Interfaith Hospitality
Network would be conducted from February 22nd through February 29th.
He also mentioned the Parish Renewal as an evangelization opportunity,
suggesting that Commission members invite someone to join them for one of the
evenings of renewal. Of all techniques for recruiting people to join service
clubs and similar organizations, one on one asking is by far the most effective.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, March 15, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting at 8:30 p.m., with the Lord’s Prayer and an
exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission January 19,
2004
Minutes
The twenty-fourth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was held on January 19th at 7:00 p.m.
in Meeting Room # 2 of the church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all
members and led the group in singing "Open Wide the Doors to Christ".
Betty Galgoci read the Prayer for Evangelization from Page 766 of
the Word & Song hymnal. Members present were Don Adviento Betty
Galgoci, Larry Kwan, Nancy Skee and Jim Hoyng.
Luke's gospel for Sunday, January 25th was read and discussed in
preparation for the work of the Commission today. Jim Hoyng read the
minutes of the November 17th meeting. A MOTION to approve was made by
Betty Galgoci, with a second by Don Adviento, and was passed unanimously.
Larry asked Nancy Skee to chair the Return to Faith Committee, which had
been headed by Pat Keefe, who resigned last year. Larry & Nancy had met
with Deacon Fred to have the banner "Mi Casa Es Su Casa" approved. The
banner was already in place for the first Spanish Mass in January. Now
that the Spanish Mass has started, Nancy will talk with Deacon Tom about
developing a new banner to be used for Lent. Nancy will check on cost and
wording.
Larry has talked with Deacon Fred about developing something for the
bulletin which visitors or returning Catholics might use to show their
interest in our church. It was decided to use a small paragraph that
could be clipped from the bulletin and upon which someone could write his
or her name, address, and phone number. Larry had cleared it for these to
be dropped in the collection basket and then sorted and returned to our
Commission. Deacon Fred indicated to Nancy that we could expect to begin
this in February of this year. Nancy will check further with Deacon Fred
for a final report.
Larry has talked with members of the Liturgy Commission, who are
developing the renewal program for this year. He is trying to get an
instructional presentation on the Landings Program for the 2005 renewal.
Jim recommended that Evangelization be suggested as a broader renewal
topic. Larry agreed, saying evangelization should be explained as one way
to give back to the church. His concern, however, remains about how get
the inactive Catholic back involved in the parish.
Don emphasized that we have to find a need shared by such individuals and
work to fill it. We can't force or embarrass them into returning. Larry
indicated that he wants more energy for the inactive and alienated
Catholics, on which Landings or a similar program would concentrate.
Nancy suggested a follow-up class for the couples who attend Baptism
Preparation Workshops with a topic such as "How do I raise this baby to be
a good Catholic?" She will follow-up this idea with Deacon Fred.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m. in
Room # 2 of our church. We closed the meeting at 8:39 p.m. with the
Lord's Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
November 17, 2003
Minutes
The
twenty-third meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church was held on November 17th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the
church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing
“Pescador de Hombres”. We did better with the English verse than the Spanish.
Larry also provided an opening prayer. Members present were Kathy Lucido, Don
Adviento Betty Galgoci, Larry Kwan, and Jim Hoyng.
Don
Adviento read from Chapter 18 of St. John’s Gospel. Jim Hoyng read the minutes
of the October 20th meeting. A MOTION to approve was made by
Betty Galgoci, with a second by Larry Kwan and was passed unanimously.
Larry
explained that Pat Keefe asked to drop from our Commission and had asked Kathy
Lucido to chair her committee. Kathy, being new to our group, asked what it
involved and Larry summarized the effort of the Return to Faith committee.
Kathy or Larry will pick up Pat’s materials, but will wait to see if she is able
to chair that committee.
Larry next
explained the proposed process, which would follow the bulletin insert for
returning Catholics. Once the name is received, Nancy Skee will contact them
and arrange for one of the Deacons to talk with them. Larry has sent a
suggested procedure to Deacon Tom and Deacon Fred for review and
recommendation. Larry will also try to arrange a meeting with Father Jack,
hopefully after one of the coming Wednesday night Masses. Larry also noted that
Nancy Skee is working with Father Jack to complete the banner to welcome the
Hispanic community to the Spanish Mass in January.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
October 20, 2003
Minutes
The
twenty-second meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church was held on October 20th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the
church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing
“All Are Welcome”. Rich Pohlman provided the opening prayer. Members present
were Kathy Lucido, Nancy Skee, Rich Pohlman, Betty Galgoci, Tom Kak, Larry Kwan,
and Jim Hoyng.
Deacon Tom
read from Chapter 10 of St. Mark’s Gospel. Jim Hoyng read the minutes of the
September 15th meeting. A MOTION to approve was made by Tom Kak
with a second by Betty Galgoci and was passed unanimously.
Nancy Skee
stated that she would like to see a banner, similar to ones that had been placed
for Stewardship Week, advertising Deacon Tom’s program for Catholic inquiry.
Rich noted that banners, advertising events such as the Spanish Class, Parish
Renewal and other events, would have a direct impact on Evangelization. Jim
noted that banners and such would be the responsibility of the Communications
Committee and we should refer this suggestion to them.
Deacon Tom
reported that he had actually started his informal sessions in the family room
on September 23rd and has not had anyone show up yet. He plans to
take a break, revamp and then start again. He noted that some 75 dogs and cats,
etc. had attended the parish blessing of the animals. Apparently, if you give
the people what they want, they will come. Kathy Lucido asked if we could give
the parishioners a survey to see what kinds of subjects they would like to
discuss. Deacon Tom noted that the members of the Parish Council have been
solicited to give topics for the next parish renewal. Rich suggested The
Mission of the Lay Faithful (What is it?) be recommended as such a
topic.

Deacon Tom
asked if Larry would suggest to the Parish Council that a Roundtable of
Commission Heads be formed so that each group would be more familiar with the
total effort within the parish. Rich suggested that we get away from groups
doing independent work and go to dependent groups working together. Other
topics suggested for renewal included Catholic Duty, Being Catholic In
Today’s World, How Can I Give Back, and Learning More About Evangelization.
Nancy Skee
showed the group a copy of the Welcome Brochure that she had secured from
Our Lady of Grace parish. A part of that brochure was an interest card that
could be deposited in the collection. Deacon Tom cautioned that we check with
the people who count the collection to be sure that they would be willing to
collect the interest cards. Nancy suggested that we develop our own brochure
and place it in the songbooks. Rich and Tom recommended that we place an insert
in the bulletin as well. Kathy cautioned that we be sure to include a Spanish
version for that community. Jim mentioned that we should try to place this in
the bulletin at least once per month and Larry said that he would talk with Pat
Evans about that issue.
Larry
reported that the Spanish Class was going well and felt that we would offer
another Basic session next spring. Nancy stated that she sees a need for
another level as well. She also noted that a Living Rosary was being developed
as a May 2004 activity. Nancy also offered to prepare a meal for the Commission
heads if Larry was able to arrange a meeting.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, November 17th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
September 15, 2003
Minutes
The
twenty-first meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church was held on September 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the
church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing
“Here I Am Lord”. Betty Galgoci provided the opening prayer. Members present
were Tom Kak, Betty Galgoci, Kathy , Pat Keefe, Jim Hoyng, Nancy Skee, Fred
Scarletto, Don Adviento, and Larry Kwan.
Deacon
Fred Scarletto read from the Gospel of St. Mark, Chapter 9, Verse 30 to 37. Jim
Hoyng read the minutes of the June 16th meeting. A MOTION to
accept by Nancy Skee with a second by Betty Galgoci was approved unanimously.
Nancy
suggested that we develop a follow-up class for parents of new children about
the role of Catholic parents. Deacon Fred reported that the Family Life
Committee is looking into that issue.
Pat
reported that churches in Raleigh are using the Landings Program to respond to
the needs of alienated Catholics. She also talked about a ministry for inactive
Catholics, entitled Another Look at the Catholic Faith, which also
addresses specific concerns of alienated Catholics. She presented copies of a
publication called Catholics United For the Faith, which Deacon
Fred indicated is similar to Catholic Update.
Deacon
Fred suggested that Deacon Tom should do a series on at least four (4) topics
and have the Enterprise publish the topics in order to draw individuals who
might have an interest in the Catholic Faith. Nancy recommended that the topics
shouldn’t necessarily be Catholic in nature, but rather broad enough to draw
significant numbers. Pat reminded the group that our focus is in attracting
those Catholics who have been alienated or are just inactive. Deacon Tom’s
first open session in the parlor is set for Tuesday, September 30th,
from 7 to 8 p.m.

Deacon
Fred reminded the group that the Church has the Sacrament of Reconciliation to
help inactive Catholics come back to the community. Deacon Tom noted that many
of those who would be classified as inactive usually consider returning to the
Church upon maturity or during significant events in their lives such as
marriage, the birth of a child, or the death of a family member. Larry
suggested that the role of our commission is to provide alternatives for people
coming into the Church under different circumstances. Deacon Fred stated that
we have to encourage a spirit of “Do You Know Anyone Who …?” within our
parish so that everyone works at identifying potential members, whether inactive
Catholic or other interested denomination, and then extend an invitation.
Nancy
reported that there are thirteen (13) teachers available for the Basic Spanish
Class, but only twenty (20) people registered so far. If more than 25 people
sign up, they plan to move to the gathering space. Jim suggested that she
consider using the cry room for overflow since it is next to meeting room # 3.
Deacon Tom
reported that a Mass for the Sick would be offered at the 11:30 service on
Sunday morning, October 26th. Larry will contact Father Tony to see
if the Liturgy Commission will need any assistance.
Kathy
suggested that we consider having a banner, advertising such events as the
Spanish Class and Mass for the Sick for traffic that passes the church. Larry
will also discuss this with Father Tony.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. The meeting was closed at 8:44 p.m., with the Lord’s Prayer and an
exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
August 18, 2003
Minutes
The
twentieth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church was held on August 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the church.
Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing “You Are
Near”. Nancy Skee provided the opening prayer. Members present were Betty
Galgoci, Jim Hoyng, Nancy Skee, Rich Pohlman, Don Adviento, and Larry Kwan.
Larry
introduced Deacon Fred Scarletto, our new Director of Faith Formation, and
Father Jack outlined the circumstances leading up to our parish beginning a
Spanish Mass on January 4, 2004. He emphasized that we will be one parish with
two languages. Jim Hoyng read the minutes of the June 16th meeting. A
MOTION to accept by Betty Galgoci with a second by Rich Pohlman was
approved unanimously.
Larry
continued our discussion about how best to recognize new members to the parish.
Along with visitors to each Mass, the Greeter has been asking anyone who has
joined the parish recently to stand so that the parish might get to know them
better. Jim mentioned how First Baptist Church has a poster with the photograph
and names of those who have recently joined their church. That poster is set on
an easel in their Fellowship Hall except for Wednesday and Sunday services when
it is moved to the church. Deacon Fred reminded us that Privacy Laws require
that a release be signed before most information about new people can be
released. Rich reminded us of his previous discussions about developing a
sponsor list, who can adopt new members and help to assimilate them into our
faith community. He will develop a mailing to go out with the upcoming mailing
to F.I.S.H. groups asking for those interested to contact us. Rich will get
the information to Larry who will forward it to the Stewardship Committee.
Larry suggested that all of our ideas be shared with the Welcoming Committee,
Greeters, and others whose programs address new members.

Rich
passed around a copy of Foundations in Faith, a precatechumenate
handbook for inquirers. He also presented We Believe, a survey of
the Catholic Faith by Oscar Lukefair, C.M. and several pamphlets from “Our
Sunday Visitor” which he suggested we place in the rack in the gathering space.
Larry will discuss that possibility with Father Tony.
In the
absence of Pat Keef, Larry reviewed what’s been done by the Return to the Faith
Committee. Nancy felt that any such program needs a social aspect and topic to
bring people in. Deacon Fred felt that our time and energy needs to be spent on
retaining existing members and integrating new members into the parish
community. Larry emphasized that we haven’t decided yet on any program and
because of our timing, Jim suggested that Pat check on the redevelopment status
of 3E.
Deacon Tom
had notified Larry that the 100th anniversary of a Catholic presence
in High Point is approaching and that news coverage of that event may foster
interest in joining our church. Larry commented that Terry Aiken is working
with Nancy Lautz to prepare packets for the 250 Catholic students at High Point
University. Rich emphasized the need to read “A Time to Listen -- A Time To
Heal”, a document prepared by the Bishops listing the principals and ideals
associated with welcoming returning Catholics.
Larry
noted that the Stewardship Fair for our parish will be held on the weekend of
September 13th & 14th. Commission members will staff the
table that Chris Wardell is helping to put together.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, September 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
June 16, 2003
Minutes
The
nineteenth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church was held on June 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the church.
Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing “Faith of
Our Fathers”. Jim Hoyng provided the opening prayer. Members present were Pat
Keefe, Rich Pohlman, Betty Galgoci, Tom Kak, Larry Kwan, and Jim Hoyng.
Deacon Tom
read from Chapter 28 of St. Matthew’s Gospel, which was the reading for
yesterday. Jim Hoyng read the minutes of the May 19th meeting. After two minor
corrections on the first page, a MOTION to approve was made by
Rich Pohlman with a second by Pat Keefe and was passed unanimously.
Retaining
new members of the parish continues to be a concern and the group discussed ways
of recognizing them so that the rest of the parish would get to know them.
Greeters are already asking that new members of the parish stand with visitors
at the beginning of each Mass. Jim suggested that we copy a practice from First
Methodist, where brochures are given to visitors with a blue ribbon attached
that visitors are supposed to attach to themselves. That makes them easily
recognizable to the rest of us so that we can be more welcoming.
Pat
reported that she and Nancy Skee attended portions of the Evangelization
Conference that was held at Greensboro College the last weekend in May. The
principle speaker was a Redemptorist priest who offered great motivation for
evangelization, but no concrete program. She noted that it depends totally on
the Holy Spirit and recommended starting with a Novena. Rich commented that a
welcoming spirit within the community is also important.
Pat
introduced Katherine Lautermilch, who coordinates the Landings Program at St.
Pius X Church in Greensboro. Katherine states that six

Members of
her parish attended initial training at St. Paul’s Church about four years ago.
They saved about $200 by joining with another parish to conduct the training and
that opportunity is available to us. Ms. Lautermilch reported that she gathers
a group (a mix of returning and active Catholics) which then meets once a week
for two hours, over a period of ten weeks. Landings Workbooks provide topics to
be discussed at each session and even offers questions to be asked. She
emphasized that the active Catholics in the group were not necessarily “Super”
Catholics, but rather individuals who were willing to talk about their faith
experiences. She felt that a good-sized group would be 8 – 10 people, with
about 60% being active and 40% being returning. During the first two years the
groups met jointly with St. Paul’s, so numbers of successes are not really
known. She knew of only one individual who did not complete the program and
return to the church.
Rich
reviewed an outline for a possible fall parish renewal, specifically focused on
developing an evangelization program for non-practicing Catholics. Deacon Tom
noted that we should have a new Director of Faith Formation by that time and
their input would be valuable. He also wondered if it were possible to just
gather a group and start meeting rather than creating a formal structure.
Rich
recommended that we purchase or copy the Bishop’s Handout, A Time to Listen – A
Time to Heal, and read it over the summer. Larry said that he would check into
the possibility of purchasing this pamphlet.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, August 18th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
May 19, 2003
Minutes
The
eighteenth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church was held on May 19th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the church.
Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing “Pan de
Vida”. Jim Hoyng provided the opening prayer. Members present were Pat Keefe,
Rich Pohlman, Tom Kak, Don Adviento, Larry Kwan, and Jim Hoyng.
Jim Hoyng
read the minutes of the April 21st meeting. After correcting spelling and the
next meeting date a MOTION to accept by Pat Keefe with a second by
Rich Pohlman was approved unanimously.
Larry
reviewed the list of Commission members and noted that there was some
involvement by all except for Joan Rathburn, who had resigned in order to spend
more time with her family. Nancy Skee had attended the last party for newcomers
to the parish and plans to attend the next one on July 26th. Larry
met with the R.C.I.A. group on May 13th, during which the Stewardship
Commission handed out a sheet of opportunities. This same sheet was a bulletin
insert for the Masses held on June 7th and 8th. Rich
talked with Marilyn Deering to discuss having members of F.I.S.H. groups
becoming sponsors for new members of the parish. Although Marilyn explained
that the primary purpose of F.I.S.H. is social, she seemed excited about
offering this responsibility to her members. Jim noted that we had
opportunities for evangelization recently when the Youth Group from 1st
Baptist Church visited during a Sunday Mass and when the Church was filled for
Garet Smith’s funeral. Pat Keefe and Nancy Skee are planning to attend the
Conference on Evangelization at Greensboro College at the end of this month and
will be able to report back at our next meeting.
Rich
passed around three texts by Father Oscar Lukefahr, C.M. that might serve to
educate Catholics and others about our faith. We Believe, The
Privilege of Being Catholic, and The Catechism Handbook

are the
titles. Rich would like to develop a power point presentation to augment these
textbooks and create a Catholic self-study. Larry and Rich discussed the
possibilities of developing this on our web-site and Larry will check the
web-site buttons.
Pat
reported that she had talked with Jeanine Martin at St. Paul’s about their
Landings Program. Ms. Martin stated that they had trained about 60 people but
that many got involved in something else before they were called upon to be a
sponsor. She noted that the sponsor needs to stay with the candidate and that a
weakness of the program may be the lack of follow-up. Pat learned about how
they alternately use press releases, TV blurbs, etc. to market the program.
Our group
discussed how to inform the parish about whatever program we begin in order to
encourage volunteers. Could we make it part of the Parish Renewal or create
something for the beginning of Advent? The new Church Year is about to begin
and we may want to tie in with that important event.
Deacon Tom
reported that he would establish a schedule for individuals to meet with him in
the parlor at Church. He explained that it was intended to provide an
opportunity for people to discuss faith problems and the like.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, June 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization
Commission
April 21, 2003
Minutes
The
seventeenth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church was held on April 21st at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the
church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing
“Christ the Lord Is Risen Today”. Jim Hoyng provided the opening prayer.
Members present were Nancy Skee, Pat Keefe, Rich Pohlman. Tom Kak, Don Adviento,
Larry Kwan, and Jim Hoyng.
Rich read
from St. John’s Gospel, Chapter 20, Verses 19 – 31, which will be the reading
for next Sunday. The story about Jesus’ visits to the disciples after his
Resurrection emphasizes that faith is a gift but takes longer for some, like
Thomas, than others and shows that not everyone comes to the faith in the same
way. This gospel also includes reference to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Nancy Skee read the minutes of the March 17th meeting and a MOTION
by Jim Hoyng with a second by Pat Keefe was approved unanimously.
Larry
reviewed several issues that were mentioned in the Minutes from the last meeting
for progress reports and action plans. He noted that there are now twelve (12)
members of the Evangelization Commission, making it one of the largest
commissions within our church. Nancy Skee was going to attend the Pizza Party,
welcoming new members. The current RCIA class continues to meet on Tuesday
evenings and Sister Johanna has invited representatives from the commissions to
talk to the group about what each commission works on in an attempt to recruit
new members. Jim will contact Ed & Sue Tracy about attending for
Evangelization.
Larry
discussed how the church manages its directory of members. There were 160 new
members that joined our church last year. Should we create a “welcome wagon” to
get them more involved in church activities? Jim suggested that a vehicle might
already exist in F.I.S.H.

Groups and
Rich said that he would talk with Marilyn Deering, who coordinates that program,
about assimilating new church members into existing F.I.S.H. groups.
Deacon Tom
noted that a brochure is supposed to be given to all new parishioners,
identifying commissions and providing contact information. While it may not be
completely current, it does provide a starting point for individuals to become
involved. Larry noted that it would be good to have a list of new families made
available to Bethany and the Knights of Columbus each month so that each might
invite new members to their organizations. Deacon Tom noted that it is
important for the new parishioner to see someone familiar when they walk out of
the church, in order that they not feel isolated.
Larry also
mentioned the possibility of a Healing Mass and Deacon Tom will discuss it
further with Father Jack.
In
reporting for the Spirit Renewal Committee, Rich noted that much of his material
had already been covered. He handed out relative material and reported that he
was working on another article for Heart to Heart. He also stated that
during the summer months (May – August), he picks a topic to study and invited
commission members who might be interested to join him. This year, he’s doing
“The Church”.
Deacon
Tom, reporting for the Sharing the Gospel Committee, added that he had three
articles published in the Enterprise. Pat Keefe reported that she had
talked with the LANDINGS Coordinators at St. Pius and St. Paul’s, who
felt the program was very effective in handling Catholics who are returning to
the Faith. That program would cost about $750 to

implement.
Pat has also talked with the priest who developed E3
(Evangelizing-Everyday-Everywhere). He told her that the program is being
restructured and won’t be available until September. In order to get started,
we might tap on to another parishes program. There is a 6-hour training program
for those conducting the LANDINGS Program
Larry
presented a brochure about a national conference, entitled “Go and Tell” to be
held at Greensboro College from Friday, May 30th, through Monday,
June 1st, of this year. Father Tom Forrest will be featured during
this program on Evangelization.
Our next
meeting will be held on Monday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of our
church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
March 17, 2003
Minutes
The 16th
meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was
held on March 17th at 7:00 P.M. in Meeting Room #2 at the Church.
Those in attendance were Deacon Kak, Dr. Kwan, Pat Keefe, and Nancy Skee.
Chairman
Larry Kwan opened the meeting by leading the group singing of “How Great Thou
Art’. The Gospel of John 2:13-25 was read by Nancy followed by the brief
reflection and comments by members.
Minutes of
the last meeting were read by Deacon Kak. Pat made a motion to approve the
minutes which was seconded by Nancy. All voted in favor of the motion.
Larry
spoke about the absence of many members of the Commission due to their
involvement in other church activities. The present membership is twelve. Larry
said that we need several others to join the Commission. He suggested that Nancy
Skee attend the next Welcome Pizza Party for new parishioners in an attempt to
recruit more members.
Deacon Kak
reported favorable results on the Gospels of John events of last month. He
estimated that about one hundred attended the Reading on the first night;
approximately twenty-five on the first discussion night; and fifteen on the
second night. He suggested that we do a similar reading prior to the beginning
of the new liturgical year (Advent) to provide an overview of the readings for
the new cycle. He said he would speak with Fr. Jack about this.
Nancy
suggested we join other churches in the area in using free advertisements in the
High Point Enterprise on weekends to let the public know about upcoming events.
Pat suggested having a Christmas and Easter display at the High Point Mall where
leaflets could be placed to invite people to our events. Deacon Kak said that he
would contact someone at the Enterprise and expressed the hope that he could
persuade them to do a “spread” on the stained-glass windows and statue of Mary
to attract visitors. Deacon Kak also suggested that he would lead small group
meetings at informal monthly donut and coffee affairs in hopes of having lapsed
Catholics return. It was further suggested that invitations to these events be
extended by parishioners who personally know Catholics who seldom or never
attend Mass.
Larry said
we need to find out why some who are registered are not attending Mass. He said
he would speak to Anne Marie for suggestions. Nancy suggested that we have a
Healing Mass once a month. Parishioners would be encouraged to invite friends
and acquaintances of all faiths to attend, especially if they need physical or
emotional healing. Deacon Kak said he would pursue this idea.
Pat gave a
report on her research of programs to bring back inactive Catholics. She
mentioned “Reaching Out” and recommended “Landings”, the program being used
successfully by St. Paul’s in Greensboro. Since this program would require a
significant expenditure, Deacon Kak suggested that Pat contact St. Paul’s to see
whether we can attach to their program or parts of it. It was noted that if we
employ this program it will require many volunteers. Pat passed out leaflets to
attending members on the “Message of Divine Mercy” and suggested we adopt the
devotion. It was suggested that she refer this to the Knights of Columbus since
they already have a Marian Devotion established.
Larry
passed out information about the Alpha Conference before leading us in the
Lord’s Prayer and exchanging the sign of peace. Next meeting will be April 21,
2003.
Evangelization
Commission
January 20, 2003
Minutes
The
fifteenth meeting of the Evangelization Commission for Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church was held on January 20th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 of the church.
Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing “We Are
Called”. Deacon Tom Kak provided the opening prayer. Members not present were
Robin Connolly, Pat Keefe, Nancy Lautz, Paul Norcross, and Chris Wardell.
Jim Hoyng
read the minutes of the November 18th meeting and a MOTION by Don
Adviento with a second by Deacon Tom was approved unanimously. Larry read from
St. Mark’s Gospel, Chapter 1, Verses 14 – 20, which was the gospel reading from
this past Sunday.
Sister
Johanna noted that we are using the Gospel of Mark for this entire Church year.
In St. Mark’s gospel, the word “immediately” is used many times and wondered if
there was a significant application in what the Adult Education Committee was
trying to develop. She mentioned that they have fifteen (15) topics, including
Prayer Groups, Retreats, Curcio, Religious Events, Group and Individual
Adoration, Salesian Spirituality. Sister Johanna distributed a brochure
developed for “A Reading of the Gospel of John” in early February and explained
that similar brochures are being developed for the other topics. Much of this
adult faith formation is designed for home based small groups.
Deacon Tom
reported that the committee on Sharing the Gospel would meet on Tuesday,
February 4th, to read in dialogue form the Gospel of St. John and to
sing. He has sent notices to 27 different churches inviting them to join us for
this event. He has also talked with reporters from the High Point Enterprise
and from the Greensboro News & Record and has emphasized the ecumenical nature
of our program. Tom will facilitate the discussions, which will occupy the
subsequent three Tuesdays. Larry asked how do we get non-parishioners to come to

event and
we concluded that one-on-one invitations would be the most effective. Deacon
Tom said that he would check the availability of the nursery and Rich was asked
to coordinate refreshments. Nancy Skee noted that she would bake brownies for
the event.
Rich
reported for the Spirit Renewal Committee that he had compiled a list of the new
families that had registered in our church for the period from October 1, 2001
through October 31, 2002. He hopes to determine how many of the new registrants
are still active members and then to survey the remaining to determine why they
are not attending. If we can find out why they are leaving then we would have a
basis for figuring out how to keep them from leaving. Larry noted that all
newcomers are called by a member of the parish council in order to welcome them
and see if they have any special needs. Rich explained that there were about
150 new members on the list that he had been given. He mentioned that the
mission of the lay faithful is to go and make disciples. He provided Larry with
two (2) computer discs and asked that they be placed on the Web site. He feels
that we need to put self-study programs on the Web site. Don noted that there
are a lot of parents, sitting in the parking lot while their kids are in CCD,
who might become the foundation for study programs at church.
Jim met
with the Community Outreach Committee in December as they met with
representatives from the Arthur Cassell Memorial Transitional House. They were
going to plan a time during which interested members of our church could tour
the facility in hopes of generating volunteer interest.
Rich
requested that during our February meeting we try to establish a date when we
will have a dialogue program in place to provide to returning Catholics and
mentioned a Reconciliation Model.

the church. The group joined the newly formed Adult Education Commission at
6:00 p.m. for dinner and to meet Mr. Frank Villaronga, the Diocesan Director of
Evangelization. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in
singing “Go”. Much practice will be needed to get this one right. Don Adviento
provided the opening prayer. Members not present were Robin Connolly, Nancy
Lautz, Paul Norcross, and Chris Wardell.
The
minutes of the October 21st meeting were read by Jim Hoyng and
approved unanimously by the Commission upon a MOTION by Rich Pohlman with
a second by Pat Keefe. Rich Pohlman read from the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter
15, Verses 19 – 21, and Larry introduced Frank Villaronga to our groups. Mr.
Villaronga reviewed his background in Miami, where he created a Web page to help
couples plan their marriage and used the modern means of communication (the
Internet) to bring Evangelization into the 20th Century. He
emphasized how critical it is to “meet the people where they are at.” After
reviewing the Minutes from our meetings, Mr. Villaronga sees us as having begun,
having educated ourselves in order to be effective, and then as issues came up,
having divided into four committees.
Mr.
Villaronga described the parish as a Sunday parish. Our Commission faces the
familiar challenge of Evangelization: ”Do we bring them to the Institution?”
This generation (people in their 20’s and 30’s) want spirituality, but not the
institution. We are able to reach out to the people in our pews. How do we
reach the people that are not in our pews?
Larry
explained that the main goal of the Commission is to have people return to
Faith. Rich discussed the growth of inter-faith marriages over

the past
few decades on our Community of Faith. While their children are becoming
increasingly involved in the activities of the Church, we need to get the
message to the parents that “You’re welcome to come home.” The committee
discussed several programs that appear to be the starting point of our efforts.
Deacon Tom
outlined the Reading of the Gospel of John with subsequent discussion, scheduled
for February, as a way of convincing people that Catholics do read the bible.
It will be important to get good coverage by the media to insure community
awareness. Father Jack noted that our Web page is an introduction to the
Catholic Faith in our community. Frank noted that a sign is needed to identify
the church to passersby and although the map in the Web site is good, more info
is needed for individuals who may not be from High Point.
Larry
pointed out the obvious overlap between Evangelization and Faith Formation.
Frank suggested that the problem may be a lack of communication and said that
our challenge is to keep the lines open. Larry also noted that in addressing
the issue of a return to faith, we must remember that we’re dealing with both
alienated and lapsed Catholics. Rich commented that we need to differentiate
between alienated and lapsed Catholics and deal with them separately. Frank
noted that a good program takes that into consideration. He suggested “While
You Were Gone”, by William Bauch, be reviewed. He also encouraged us to adapt
our program to our reality and not to be a slave to the program.
Pat Keefe
reported that she has collected information on a variety of programs, including
“Catholics Returning Home”, “Landings”, and “Remembering Church”. Frank also
mentioned a program developed by the Paulists, entitled “I Am E3 (Evangelizing
Everday Everwhere)”, in which an evangelizing community is developed. He gave

Regardless of what program we may select, we need to have a welcoming
community.
Are we a
welcoming community? A sense of community can be created with doughnuts and
coffee, with our greeting visitors at the beginning of each service, and through
cell groups (small Christian communities) with faith sharing. However,
everything needs to be a part of the larger community.
Father
Jack encouraged our Commission to spend some time (5-10 minutes) in prayer at
the beginning of each meeting. Review the gospel, the homily, readings or
reflections. If we do that, the other stuff will take care of itself.
Larry led
the group in reciting the Lord’s prayer and exchanging the sign of peace as he
closed the meeting. Our next meeting was scheduled for Monday, January 20,
2003.
Evangelization
Commission
October 21, 2002
Minutes
The
twelfth meeting of Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held
on October 21st at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room # 2 at IHM church.
Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing “The Prayer
of St. Francis”. Rich Pohlman provided the opening prayer. Members not present
were Robin Connolly, Nancy Lautz, Paul Norcross, and Chris Wardell.
Jim Hoyng
read the minutes of the September 16th meeting and a MOTION by Pat
Keefe with a second by Deacon Tom was approved unanimously. Deacon Tom read
from St. Luke’s Gospel, Chapter 4, Verses 14 – 19.
Larry
reported that Catholic students at High Point University are involved with Youth
Ministry through Terry Aiken at our church. Jim questioned if students at John
Wesley College and Guilford Technical Community College were also being
contacted and involved. He also noted that two additional people have expressed
interest in joining our Commission, one of which was Nancy Skee.
Larry also
talked about staffing a table with brochures in the gathering space. Pat
suggested moving the brochure rack to be more visible, but, after discussion,
felt that it should remain at its present location. It was suggested that our
church name and telephone number be stamped on these brochures in order to make
it easier for interested persons to contact the church. In response to a
question about what happens to persons who do inquire, Father Tony noted that it
would depend upon where the individual is in their faith journey (R.C.I.A.,
etc.). Also, how do we handle those who fall between the cracks for
confirmation? Father Tony suggested that we have to develop substance at the
other end of inquiries and referrals.

Pat Keefe
will head up the Return to Faith Committee. Father Tony noted that a new
person has been appointed for the Dioceses in charge of Evangelization. An
effort will be made to find out who that is and make contact. Jim will get
videos of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen’s “Life is Worth Living” series for Pat to
preview. He also suggested the “Time to Listen – Time to Heal” series from the
Bishops’ Conference. Jim mentioned tapes by Jeff Cavens and by Dr. Scott Hahn,
Overcoming Common Objections and Be Not Afraid. Rich suggested
that we need to distinguish between the Alienated and Lapsed Catholics and deal
with them differently. While adult education might be the proper approach for
someone who just faded away from the Church, a listen and heal approach, which
is part of the Landings Program, would be more necessary for an alienated
Catholic.
Rich
Pohlman, reporting for the Spiritual Renewal Committee, distributed a
copy of the Pope’s addresses on September 29th and October 9th
in which he suggests that the holy rosary be prayed by individuals, by families,
and by Christian communities. Rich said that this and other devotions could be
considered as a way for our parish to initiate spiritual renewal. The Knights
of Columbus currently have a community rosary after the 6:30 p.m. Mass on the 3rd
Wednesday of each month. It would be an appropriate response to the Holy
Father’s wishes if our parish could formally expand saying the rosary.
Deacon Tom
Kak reported for the Sharing the Gospel Committee. He has scheduled a
reading of the Gospel of John in dialogue form for February 4, 2003, followed by
Breaking Open the Word of God on:
February 11th: Believing in the Love (John 3: 11 – 21)
February 18th: Nourished by the Love (John 6: 32 – 58)
February 25th: United by Love (John 15 and John 17)
He noted
Sister Johanna’s concerns about conducting this on Tuesday evenings, in conflict
with the RCIA classes. The format will

focus on
how it affects you individually and talk about concerns. The program will be
completed just prior to Ash Wednesday on March 5th. Father Tony
reported that Father Joe DeMaro has been scheduled to hold the Parish Renewal
from March 8th – 12th, 2003. A discussion on where to
conduct the sessions since many of the meeting rooms were being used offered the
choir practice room, although the church itself might be more appropriate.
Rich
presented a grassroots renewal project being provided by the Franciscan Friars
of the Renewal. Entitled, An Urgent Appeal by Father Benedict Groeschel, it
involves three (3) half-day programs.
Larry
reported that he had contacted Donna Howell, who chairs the Community Outreach
Commission, for Jim Hoyng to attend their meetings.
During a
discussion on how Immaculate Heart of Mary projects ourselves into the
community, Father Tony again suggested that we contact the diocesan individual
on Evangelization. We need to take advantage of media coverage beyond our own
Heart to Heart. While radio time may cost money, the Enterprise provides
a regular column for church activities, including a calendar of events. Deacon
Tom noted that we evangelize in brick and glass, through our stained-glass
windows and new Mary Statue, and should use the art to secure media coverage.
He also said that we should use the media calendar to cover the February program
on the Gospel of John. We should also use the Greensboro, Jamestown and
Thomasville papers to reach members in those cities.
Our next
meting will be held on Monday, November 18th 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in
Room # 2 of our church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an
exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
September 16, 2002
Minutes
The eleventh
meeting of Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on
September 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2 at the new church. Chairman
Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the group in singing "If You Believe and
I Believe.” Pat Keefe provided the opening prayer. Members not present were
Robin Connolly, Jim Hoyng, Paul Norcross and Chris Wardell.
There was a
reading from Matthew 23:1-12. Minutes of the August 19th meeting
were read and approved. Larry announced that Chris Wardell would not be able to
participate in our commission for a few months due to a medical problem. Pat
Keefe will take over Chris’ sub-commission in her absence.
Stewardship
Weekend was August 24th and 25th. Our table was not
heavily visited; however, there were a couple of people that showed interest in
our commission. They will be invited to attend one of our meetings. We may
want to consider a different table location next time as the comment was made
that it seemed the traffic pattern made it too easy to exit the church instead
of encouraging stopping at the table.
Our Labor Day
Picnic was a huge success. Lots of new members in the church were present.
Because it was joined with the Youth Ministry kickoff, there were many fun
activities for the children. It was thought that this joining with Youth
Ministry, as well as the picnic not being on Labor Day weekend, helped to
promote the outstanding attendance. Sr. Johanna gave a Power Point presentation
in the Gathering Space.
It was mentioned
that it might be good to have a function where the Church would be open for
others outside of the church to come and visit. Evidently, many years ago there
was a carnival type function that was open to the public. Larry said he would
bring it up to the Family Life Commission. Perhaps we could even enlarge the
Labor Day Picnic encouraging all to bring a friend.
Fr. Tony suggested that we
change one sentence in our Mission Statement to help clarify those we plan to
reach. A motion was made and a corrected version of our Mission Statement now
reads:
The mission of the
Evangelization Commission of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church is to
actively fulfill the mandate of the U.S. Catholic Bishops “Go and make disciples
of all nations” by prayer to invoke the blessings of the Holy Spirit on all our
endeavors. We hope to bring to our active, inactive and alienated Catholics an
enthusiasm in living their faith in Jesus. We strive to invite the unchurched
to come and know the love and divine mercy of God through Eucharist, Liturgy and
Sacraments. Our commission encourages all people, whatever their social,
cultural and religious background, to hear and share the message of salvation in
Jesus Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith.
News from our 4
sub-commissions:
1.
Spiritual Renewal –
Edna Corrigan should have a Perpetual Adoration article to come out in the next
Heart to Heart.
2.
Return to Faith –
Pat will check with Chris about Landings or other programs. We must find which
program will work best for our parish.
3.
Sharing the Gospel –
A sharing of the Gospel of John this spring beginning in February has been
approved by Fr. Tony. It will be called “Teachings of Love on the Gospel of
John” and will unfold as follows:
1st Week – “Believing in the Love” – break open
the Word of the Lord. What is God saying about love?
2nd Week – “Nourished by the Love” –didactic
teachings and individual experience.
3rd Week – “United by the Love” – God calls us
to become one as He and the Father are one.
This is a large undertaking that will require much work
from many people. It is important that we confirm our people resources before
Tom puts any more work into this. Rich has some people in mind that he will
approach. It may take 12 or so weeks to prepare a team on the beliefs and
teachings of the Catholic Church from these readings. It is important that the
guests attending are involved and active so they will want to attend all three
meetings. It was also mentioned that it might be nice to have an area pastor
from another church to participate. This may encourage a larger attendance
drawing from outside our parish.
Rich also mentioned that he would like for the commission
to buy 25-50 Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth booklets as well as 50 of
The Top 10 Reasons to Come Back to the Catholic Church. Rich will contact
Ann-Marie.
4.
Fostering Gospel Value – Jim is attending the
Commission Outreach meetings. It was discussed that it may be a good idea to
focus on respect of life in general instead of just one issue. The campus
ministry at High Point University was discussed. We want to be sure the church
welcomes the students when they come back to school after Christmas. Also, we
need to check to see if Terry Aiken is presently going to the campus since he is
a HPU alumni.
Be sure to send Rich your comments on his Heart to Heart
article.
Our next meeting
will be October 21st at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2 at the new church. We
closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
August 19, 2002
Minutes
The tenth meeting
of Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on August 19th
at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2 at the new church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all
members and led the group in singing "We Gather Together.” Chris Wardell
provided the opening prayer. Members not present were Don Adviento, Robin
Connolly, Jim Hoyng, Paul Norcross and Nancy Lautz.
Minutes of the
June 17th meeting were read and approved. There was a reading from 1st
Corinthians.
Stewardship
Weekend is August 24th and 25th. Rich is in charge of
getting everything organized for the table. The mass working schedule is as
follows: 6:00 p.m. – Pat; 9:00 a.m. - Joan, Chris & Tom; 11:00 a.m. –Larry.
The absent members will be contacted to fill in needed spaces at each mass.
Chris will meet with Larry and Rich at 5:00 p.m. Saturday night. She will
provide poster information that will be displayed at the table. Other table
contents will be pamphlets, books, a shortened video (from last time), and some
sort of pamphlet with the four main areas of our commission so that parishioners
can better understand what we do and perhaps volunteer for a specific area.
Our Labor Day
Picnic will be Sunday, September 1st at the new church from 4:00 till
7:00 p.m. Sr. Johanna and Chris will present a Power Point show of Vacation
Bible School.
Larry compiled
the various ideas for the Mission Statement and came up with a couple of choices
for us. We voted that our Mission Statement would be as follows:
The mission of the
Evangelization Commission of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church is to
actively fulfill the mandate of the U.S. Catholic Bishops “Go and make disciples
of all nations” by prayer to invoke the blessings of the Holy Spirit on all our
endeavors. We hope to bring to our active and inactive members an enthusiasm in
living their faith in Jesus. We strive to invite the unchurched to come and
know the love and divine mercy of God through Eucharist, Liturgy and
Sacraments. Our commission encourages all people, whatever their social,
cultural and religious background, to hear and share the message of salvation in
Jesus Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith.
Deacon Tom and
Rich have been working on a program for the spring. Their thoughts are to
present the Gospel of John in dialogue form with possibly as many as 10
different readers. It would last no more than 2 hours with a social
afterwards. People would be asked back for the next consecutive 3 weeks to
discuss the various chapters of John and the various church teachings that come
out of this Gospel. Group leaders would need to be trained for this program as
much as 12 weeks in advance. It was suggested that the actual program begin on
February 4th with the Gospel dialogue reading and the next sharing 3
weeks be the 11th, 18th and 25th. Tom will
present this program idea and dates to Fr. Jack for approval.
Sr. Johanna has
compiled an Adult Education Interest Survey which will be going out in the
bulletin soon. It may be that the Evangelization Commission could make up a
portion of this program through Rich and Tom’s idea about the Gospel of John.
Our commission should try to help energize the Faith Formation program and reach
out in whatever way we can. We may have already missed the Campus Ministry
window by a slow response in welcoming back the High Point University students.
Four
subcommittees were formed to address the goals of the Evangelization Commission.
1.
Spiritual Renewal –
Joan Rathburn
2.
Return to Faith –
Chris Wardell
3.
Sharing the Gospel –
Rich Pohlman
4.
Fostering Gospel Values – Jim Hoyng
Please look over
Rich’s Heart to Heart article that tells about our Evangelization Commission and
report back to him with any suggestions.
Our next meeting
will be September 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2 at the new church. We
closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
June 17, 2002
Minutes
The ninth meeting
of Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on June 17th
at 7:00 p.m. in Room 3 at the new church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all
members and led the group in singing "Blest Are They.” Joan Rathburn provided
the opening prayer. Members not present were Robin Connolly, Paul Norcross,
Chris Wardell and Nancy Lautz.
Minutes of the
May 6th meeting were read and approved. Jim Hoyng read from the book
of Isaiah. Larry announced that Sr. Johanna would be joining our commission as
well as Fr. Jack. They will attend as much as they are able. Sr. Johanna
joined us tonight.
We discussed
“Enthusiasm for Faith” from our workbooks. We talked again about being fully
active and participating Catholics. Various ideas were tossed around. We
mentioned contacting Edna Corrigan about ways to inform people about Perpetual
Adoration. We felt it would be good to attend some RCIA meetings during their
Mystogia period to inform and promote various commissions. We need to write an
article in Heart to Heart that will promote what we do. We need to continue
readying various pamphlets for distribution. Hopefully, we will be able to
utilize web sites, etc. to better reach and inform various members and
non-members. It was mentioned that IHM seemed to be a Sunday church only with
no meeting for prayer on any other night. We talked about a Sunday morning
Faith Formation program for children that would also include adult Faith
Formation.
It was moved to
give Larry our Mission Statements for him to condense into one statement. We
talked about setting objectives. It was also mentioned that it would be nice to
have a written history of our Church.
Larry announced
that our Commission picture was ready for the directory.
Rich has agreed
to write an article for Heart to Heart about our Commission as soon as we decide
on our Mission Statement. It was mentioned that we should look into putting
something in the Enterprise on their Saturday Church page that would familiarize
the community more with IHM. Other churches do it on a regular basis.
We discussed some
goals and budget sub-commissions. For example, a Landings or other program,
even our own, if one of those is too expensive. The following figures were
mentioned: $600 for handouts, $100 for support materials, $400 for programs.
It was felt that $3000 was a good figure for our next year’s budget.
Larry reminded us
that Stewardship Weekend is August 24th and 25th.
Our next meeting
will be July 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 3 at the new church. We closed
the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
May 6, 2002
Minutes
The eighth meeting of Immaculate Heart of Mary’s
Evangelization Commission was held on May 6th at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting
Room # 2 at IHM church. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the
group in singing "You Are Near". Rich Pohlman provided the opening prayer.
Members not present were Robin Connolly, Paul Norcross, and Joan Rathburn.
The minutes of the April 1st meeting were
approved as presented. Don Adviento read from St. Paul’s letter to the
Ephesians.
Members of the Commission read the following Goals of
Catholic Evangelization from the Planning Workbook and the entire group
discussed them in detail:
1.
To bring about in
all Catholics such an enthusiasm for their faith that, in living their
faith in Jesus, they freely share it with others.
2.
To invite (create
a more welcoming attitude) all people in the United States, whatever their social or cultural
background, to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ so they may come to
join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith.
3.
To foster gospel
values in our society, promoting the dignity of the human person, the importance
of the family and the common good of our society (by conscious example)
so that our nation may continue to be transformed by the saving power of Jesus
Christ.
Larry reminded the group about our Commission’s
participation in the mini Stewardship (Ministry) Fair that will be held on May
18th and 19th after each Mass. This is the feast of
Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, and will be a wonderful opportunity to
explain what we do as well as recruit new members. Nancy suggested that we
prepare a chart with the objectives that are listed on Pages 18, 19, and 20 of
our Workbook under each of the goals listed above. Deacon Tom suggested
May Minutes Continued
Page 2
that we take these goals and list them on a poster.
Nancy noted that we’re looking for people who can increase faith and create a
sense of community in our parish. Evangelization isn’t difficult; it’s doing the
small things. Chris suggested that we prepare a poster with "If You Think
that Non-Catholics are the Only Ones Who Evangelize, THINK AGAIN!"
Deacon Tom suggested a poster that read, "Give
Yourself As a Present" to parallel the gifts of the Holy Spirit on this
feast day. The following items were then suggested:
1.
Invite someone to
Mass.
2.
Call the Volunteer
Center.
3.
Share scripture or
prayer in a family setting.
4.
Smile and greet
other parishioners.
5.
Participate in
parish activities or ministries.
Don Adviento volunteered to cover the 6:00 Mass on
Saturday; Nancy, Jim & Joan will handle the 9:00 and Pat and Rich will handle
the 11:00 on Sunday.
Larry emphasized that we must begin to spend more time
preparing the Mission Statement for our Commission. Several items were
distributed in conjunction with that item. Larry also noted that Father Jack
would be unable to attend any of our Commission Meetings.
Our next meting will be held on Monday, June 17, 2002 at
7:00 p.m. in Room # 3 of our church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s
Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
April 1, 2002
Minutes
The seventh meeting of Immaculate Heart of
Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on April 1st at 7:00 p.m. in Room 3 at
the new church. Members not present were Deacon Tom, Robin Connolly, Paul
Norcross and Rich Pohlman. Our commission expanded with the presence of a new
member, Nancy Lautz.
The meeting began with an opening song. Pat
Keefe led the opening prayer. Minutes of the March 11th meeting were
approved but amended to clarify that both St. Paul’s and Christ the King offer
scouting programs. Chris read from the Gospel of Matthew.
Jim read the 7th Element of
Catholic Evangelization, "A Process of Dialogue & Encounter." We then entered
into a discussion concerning a parish community profile—exploring our parish
strengths and weaknesses in programs and activities to deepen the faith of
participating parish members. Parish strengths were noted as Parish Renewal,
RCIA, Bible Study, Pre-Cana, Baptism Program and our new Church. One weakness
noted was no formal teaching program for cradle Catholics who have never had the
opportunity to attend classes to help them better understand or deepen their
faith.
We then discussed what strengths or weaknesses we had in
our parish for reaching out to the alienated or unchurched. The absence of a
formal teaching program or Landings Program was one weakness mentioned.
Hopefully, we can look at 2 or 3 different programs in an effort to best reach
our alienated brothers. A comment was made that the second largest denomination
is non-participating Catholics.
As we get deeper into our role for this commission, we
will hopefully address our last goal of bringing Gospel values to bear on all of
life.
We then discussed what activities, other than religion
classes, are part of our parish evangelization to children, youth and young
adults. Strengths mentioned were our parish school and youth ministry program. A
particular weakness discussed was the gap that falls after our youth’s
Confirmation. At that point, no more CCD classes are required. There is the
youth ministry program for those youth that will participate, but once they
reach 18, there is nothing. No young adult program exists. It was mentioned that
High Point University has a large Catholic population but no Chaplain.
The two mission statements that had already been
submitted were read out loud. It was decided that we should all work again on
coming up with more ideas. We should look over the by-laws, think about goals
and objectives and have something to Larry before the next meeting so he can
consolidate our ideas on one sheet of paper to be reviewed more easily by all at
the May meeting.
April 13th and 14th are
the new dates for our Commission to showcase a table for advertising and
recruiting purposes. Assignments for manning the table are as follows: 6:00 p.m.
– Rich, Jim, Don and Paul; 9:00 a.m. – Rich, Larry, Chris, Nancy and Joan; 11:00
a.m. – Rich and Pat. We will show Rich’s video, pass out brochures, and have
books from our Church library available for check out.
We need to be thinking about both long term
and short term goals for our commission’s role in our parish. By this summer, we
will need to have something concrete in mind as to what we would like to do for
our Church.
May 18th and 19th is
Stewardship Fair weekend. A table representing the Evangelization Commission
will be set up. We will organize it the same way we are doing for the April 13th
and 14th event.
Just a reminder that April 27th is
the ICSC Region IV Stewardship Conference being held in Columbia, SC. Please
attend if at all possible. Also, we will need to submit an article about our
commission to Heart to Heart by the end of the summer. This will need to
include a final version of our Mission Statement.
Our next meeting will be May 6th at 7:00 p.m.
in Room 2 at the new church. We will have our picture taken for the Church
Directory at this meeting. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an
exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
March 11, 2002
Minutes
The sixth meeting of Immaculate Heart of
Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on March 11th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 3
at the new church. Members not present were Deacon Tom, Robin Connolly, and Paul
Norcross.
The meeting began with an opening song. Don
Adviento led the opening prayer. Minutes of the February 11th meeting
were read and approved. Joan read from the Gospel of John.
We spoke again about the 6th
element of Catholic Evangelization, "Public, Involving Society at Large." A
short discussion followed concerning community outreach and the Interfaith
Hospitality Network. We also discussed how evangelization involves every aspect
of Church. It was brought up that the Catholic churches in the area do not
sponsor a scouting program. Children have to go to other churches if they are
interested in this.
There will be a PCL Lenten Retreat on March 23rd
from 9:30 until 2:00 at the Catholic Conference Center in Hickory. On April 27th
from 9-4 in Columbia, SC, there is an ICSC Retreat. Stewardship and
Evangelization are a couple of topics offered for the retreat.
We reflected for a few moments on our Parish Renewal. It
was enjoyed by all and we wish more of the parish could have attended.
On March 23rd and 24th
our Commission will showcase a table for advertising and recruiting purposes. We
need to remind Paul about the table. Literature will be provided by Jim. There
will be books and booklets on the table. Jim and Rich will come up with an
information card for interested people to carry home with them. We will have a
sign-up sheet available for anyone that would like to join our commission.
Assignments for manning the table are as follows: 6:00 p.m. – Rich, Jim & Don;
9:00 a.m. – Rich, Pat, Larry & Joan; 11:00 a.m. – Rich and Paul. If approved by
Fr. Joe, we will possibly have a video playing at the table that was created by
Rich. The topic concentrates on the place laity have in Evangelization. It is
approximately 17 minutes long. We reviewed it together and thought it was very
good. The final decision will rest with Fr. Joe.
Larry went over the IHM building checklist. It
mostly asks us to check to make sure the lights are off, any space used is clean
upon leaving, doors are closed, appliances off in kitchen, etc.
May 18th and 19th is
Stewardship Fair weekend. A table representing the Evangelization Commission
will be set up. We will organize it the same way we are doing for the March 23rd
and 24th event.
If you have not already submitted a Mission
Statement, please do so. Larry will condense them and send them to us so that we
can consider them all.
Our next meeting will be April 1st
at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2 at the new church. Larry also asked us to be thinking
about some budget guidelines. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer.
Evangelization Commission
February 11,
2002
Minutes
The fifth meeting of Immaculate Heart of
Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on February 11th at 7:00 p.m. in Room
3 at the new church. Members not present were Deacon Tom, Robin Connolly, Don
Aviento, Chris Wardell and Paul Norcross.
The meeting began with an opening song. Jim
Hoyng led the opening prayer. Minutes of the January 7th meeting were read and
approved. Larry read from the Gospel of Matthew.
We read aloud from our workbook the 6th
element of Catholic Evangelization, "Public, Involving Society at Large." A
short discussion followed concerning community outreach and the Interfaith
Hospitality Network. We also discussed the future plans of the Evangelization
Commission. We are looking to summer or after before setting concrete plans. We
need to establish a working budget, get some group training and then target a
particular group that we would begin our outreach. We may need to change our
meeting night for Fr. Jack to be able to attend.
An update on Parish Renewal March 4th,
5th, & 6th was given. Our commission will be hosting the
reception on Wednesday night, March 6th, including set up, serving,
and clean up. Robin will find out from Glenda about the food budget allowed.
Since it is Lent, the plans are for the food to be simple, such as cheese,
crackers, fruit trays, etc. We may also be asked to facilitate some of the
Renewal break-out sessions. If so, training will probably be sometime between
February 25th and March 1st. We will be notified if our
help is needed.
Paul is handling the Sunday table set-up that
the Evangelization Commission will be manning. Jim is going to look for
literature that interested people can take home.
For recruiting purposes, the Parish Council
would like for us to showcase a table about our committee on the weekend of
March 23rd and 24th.
May 18th and 19th is our
Church Stewardship Fair weekend. A table representing the Evangelization
Commission will be set up. We need to be thinking about what we wish to be
represented on the table.
Each member should work on a Mission Statement
for our commission. We are to think about it and try to submit some ideas either
by e-mail to Larry or by the March meeting.
Doughnut Sunday is presently being handled by
different Church commissions. Eventually, our commission will be expected to
take a turn.
Due to Parish Renewal our next meeting will be
moved to March 11th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 3 at the new church. We
closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer.
Evangelization Commission
January 7,
2002
Minutes
The fourth meeting of Immaculate Heart of
Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on January 7th at 7:00 p.m.
in Room 2 at the new church. The only member not present was Robin Connolly.
The meeting began with an opening song. Joan
Rathburn led the opening prayer. Minutes of the December 3rd meeting
were read and approved. Pat read from the Gospel of John.
We read aloud from our workbook some of the
elements of Catholic Evangelization. A short discussion followed concerning the
personal conversion that evangelization calls for and how we must put on the
mind of Christ to become Christ-like in all we do.
Chris reported that she hoped the banner would
be ready by January 15th in plenty of time for the Dedication
festivities.
The Open House/Concert will be Friday,
February 1st followed by the Church Dedication on Sunday, February 3rd.
The Open House will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with the Concert beginning at 7:00
p.m. and a reception following. We discussed various ways in which we could be
of help to the Transition 2000 Committee during Open House. It seems that two
areas where the most help is needed is greeters at the front door and serving
help at the reception following the concert. As greeters, our job will be to
warmly greet all that come in and to pass out the Open House information
programs that the 2001 Transition Committee will have available. We will wear
nametags and direct our visitors where they need to go. We are to be ready to
help with the refreshments during the reception if we are needed. We need to let
Paul know if we plan to help as a greeter so that he can get the nametags made.
We are thinking we will need 8 – 10 greeters. All spouses are encouraged to help
also, if available.
We briefly discussed our Evangelization
Commission table that will eventually be set up on Sundays. We discovered there
is already a pamphlet in circulation that may be of benefit to us at our table.
Larry reminded us that we will also be
involved in the Parish Renewal Reception in March.
Due to the busy first weekend surrounding our
Church Dedication, our next meeting will be moved to February 11th at
7:00 p.m. in Room 3 at the new church. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s
Prayer and exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
December 3,
2001
The third meeting of the Evangelization Commission for
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was held on December 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
in the Music Room at IHM. Chairman Larry Kwan greeted all members and led the
group in singing "Come Back To Me" from the hymnal. Chris Wardell gave an
opening prayer. Members not present were Robin Connolly and Joan Rathburn.
The minutes of the November 5th meeting were
approved as presented. Larry read from Luke’s gospel just prior to the entire
group sharing their petitions related to evangelization and our parish.
Members of the Commission read the following Elements of
Catholic Evangelization and the entire group discussed them in detail:
1.
Christ-Centered – our vision must encompass
Christ’s full vision of God and creation in order for us to be evangelized.
2.
Inclusive – means embracing other people with
their cultures and traditions; making room for ecumenical dialogue and growth.
It has different implications depending on our relationship to Jesus and his
Church.
3.
Invitational – does not involve changing a
person from one religion to another, but rather presenting the divine power of
the Gospel.
4.
Conversion-Based – is not the end or the goal
of evangelization. The life of discipleship in the beginning of the Christian
journey.
Larry reminded the group that
the Dedication of our new Church has been scheduled for February 3rd.
An Open House for the Community is planned for Friday, February 1st.
Our Commission needs to design a banner, which symbolizes what our mission
statement is. Deacon Tom showed us the banner, which Joan Rathburn had created
for the Bethany Society, so that we had a better understanding of the
dimensions. Paul Norcross had prepared several symbols for consideration and the
group sketched a preliminary banner design to represent the Evangelization
Commission.
Larry repeated his feelings
about our Commission manning information tables in conjunction with other
volunteers. The group felt that brochures, handouts, and a Guest Register should
be available and that we send a card to those who register. Because of time
constraints, we were unable to discuss the Mission Statement for our Commission.
Our next meting will be held
on Monday, January 7, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in Room # 2 of the new Church on Johnson
Street. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
November 5, 2001
Minutes
The second meeting
of Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on November 5th
at 7:00 p.m. in the Music Room at IHM. Members not present were Deacon Tom and
Robin Connolly.
Larry welcomed
everyone and passed out copies of our new workbooks. Jim Hoyng opened the
meeting with prayer. Introductions were again made, as several members were not
at our first meeting.
The minutes of the
last meeting were read and approved as written. Larry announced that we would
continue to meet in the Music Room at IHM until our January meeting which will
be in the new church in Room 2. We again briefly discussed the need for special
programs for the 20 and 30 age groups to make them feel more a part of our
parish community.
Larry asked for a
volunteer for the position of Vice-Chair. Chris Wardell stepped forward and
assumed this responsibility.
Chris read a
scripture reading from John. Afterwards, we had a sharing of prayer petitions
concerning evangelization in our parish.
It was agreed that
instead of continuing in our workbooks reading the "7 Elements of Catholic
Evangelization," we would read this at home and be ready to discuss it at the
next meeting. We went back and re-read the section on "Defining Evangelization."
Through open discussion, the members made the following points:
1.
Evangelization for
Catholics is a new work. Perhaps our past size in numbers has made us complacent
in our outreach. Unfortunately, the number of fallen away Catholics has
skyrocketed.
2.
Catholics don’t seem
to speak out—sharing and welcoming as other denominations do. We need a greater
personal conviction for our faith that will shine forth as we reach out to
others.
3.
Many Catholics have
the mentality of fulfilling their Sunday obligation, whether they actually fully
participate or not, and then leaving immediately to go back home. We must show
that we are fully active participants when we come to Mass. We must make sure
that we, ourselves, are truly converted and that we are a good example for
others. Then we can begin to help those with needs.
4.
We must find ways to
make others feel warm and welcomed while displaying true conviction for our
faith. We must find programs that will interest them and/or guide them so that
they are not embarrassed or made to feel uncomfortable. We must set up
organized, properly flowing channels of material and support that will guide
active transferring Catholics, non-active returning Catholics or interested
people from other denominations.
Larry shared that the Transition 2001 Committee had
grown in numbers and the possibility of us joining with them to help in the
planning process would no longer be necessary. However, we will need to help in
certain areas on the night of Open House. The new Church Dedication is
scheduled on February 3, 2001. There is a concert planned with Tom Kenzia on
the Friday night before the Dedication. Larry mentioned that this would also be
a good opportunity to invite others to visit our church since the Open House
date is still to be determined. Larry will suggest that to Wanda Garrett and
Randy Moser.
Our Evangelization Commission must have a
banner ready for our new church Dedication ceremony. We are to each come up with
a design for the banner consisting of symbols, etc., that we feel would
represent what our Commission is about. We will share our ideas at the next
meeting so we can best decide on the elements that we feel most accurately
represents us. We will then have the banner made and ready for the February
Dedication and Open House.
Larry suggested and requested support from our
group to have a manned Evangelization Commission table along side with the
welcome committee , the parish council etc etc at all masses every Sunday for
the first six months or so after we moved in our new church. We will serve the
non-Catholic and inactive Catholic visitors.
Our Commission will also need to come up with
a Mission Statement. We agreed that this is something that will need to be well
thought out encompassing a time period of several meetings.
Our next meeting will be Monday, December 3rd
in the Music Room at IHM. We closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and an
exchange of peace.
Evangelization Commission
October 1,
2001
Minutes
The first meeting of Immaculate Heart of
Mary’s Evangelization Commission was held on October 1st at 7:00 p.m.
in the Music Room at IHM. Larry Kwan greeted all members and opened the meeting
with prayer. Members not present were Robin Connolly, Jim Hoyng, Chris Wardell
and Paul Norcross.
For introductions, we each told a little bit
about ourselves including our length of membership at IHM and past and present
involvement. Larry read us an introduction about Evangelism which stressed the
conversion of hearts and interior renewal beginning with our own. Then we can
reach out to the alienated of our church or to the unchurched.
Larry asked for volunteers for the position
of secretary and vice chair. Joan Rathburn volunteered to be the committee
secretary. Larry was going to ask one of the missing members to be the vice
chair whose duty it would be to conduct the meetings when Larry had to be
absent.
A scripture reading from John was read and we
each shared petitions concerning evangelization in our parish.
A document written by Pope John Paul II
concerning "The Vocation of the Parish" was read. Also read was a document
"Defining Evangelization." We discussed evangelization and spoke about different
aims and goals. We identified three key areas that need help—Welcoming
Committee, Family Life and Youth Ministry. It was agreed that we need a strong
sense of welcoming to all outsiders in our parish, whether they are visiting
Catholics, visiting non-Catholics or anyone inbetween. We discussed the
warmness, or lack of, that we display having a direct and lasting effect on the
person visiting or joining our church from a different area. We also discussed
the imperativeness of having a strong Youth Ministry program as we have had some
families make other church denomination choices because of that church’s strong
youth program. We also addressed the needs of a strong Family Life program for
singles, divorced, etc. to make them feel needed and supported by our faith
community.
It was suggested that we join with the
Transition 2001 Committee that is already working on an Open House for our new
sanctuary that will be for non-IHM members. We can work with them establishing a
timely date for the event which will be close following the date of our
dedication, as well as, an invitation list. We also discussed the possibility of
having some type of brochure that would explain the meaning of certain Catholic
things found in our church, for example, the meaning of the pictures on the
stained glass windows, etc.
Larry reiterated that the path of our
Evangelization Commission would be a slow one. We will read from the workbooks
he has, we will pray and ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and we will
take things slowly. The meetings will be on the first Monday of each month at
7:00 p.m. Larry will let us know which room we will be meeting in.
The meeting closed with the Lord’s prayer and
an exchange of peace.
