EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION MEETING, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, April 19, 2010, 7 PM, Room #2.  PRESENT: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, Lon Atkins, Margo Atkins, Betty Galgoci, Nancy Skee

Meeting opened with all reading the Capital Campaign Prayer.

Minutes of the February meeting were read and approved.

Jan Hitch read next Sunday’s Acts 43-52; 13-14.  Reflections on the readings were shared.

Nancy Skee reported that the Spanish classes ended with a celebration at a Mexican restaurant in Greensboro with 18 present.  She is waiting to hear more details from a college professor who wants to run a 12 week trial course for beginners using a program she has created. New series of classes is set to begin Sept. 23 if volunteer teachers are available.

Nancy’s  report continued: Our 6th International Festival to celebrate Pentecost Sunday is  May 23, 3:30 PM to 7 PM.   As always we have scheduled very talented stage entertainers and games and activities for the children.  We expect attendance to be between one and two thousand as in the past.  As Fr. Jack wished this to be a free event, it has become a community covered dish where the only admission asked of guests is to bring food to share.   However, there are expenses to be covered ($l,000 to $2,000).  In previous years we have had generous sponsors to provide these funds such as Ilderton and Faltynski, as well as many others.  Our club members donate tons of food and other items needed to make it a festive occasion.  This year instead of asking for sponsors and leaving profit from our fundraiser event in the general church fund, we have reserved the use of it for festival expenses.  However, we discussed that perhaps we should have tried to get sponsors this year in order to leave more in the church funds.  It was decided that we will send out letters for next year.  Also one of our Club members will be contacting international businesses in High Point to seek sponsors.   Chmn Kwan said he will try to get Fr Jack to allow a few words of announcement after each mass the weekend prior to the festival to encourage more of our own parishioners to attend.

Chmn Kwan  said that he had been in touch with Randy Moser. Stewardship Chairman.  The possibility of a stewardship weekend to replace Appreciation Night is being considered,  Such an event might feature 4 or 5 of the larger commissions, which would include our commission.

Jan Hitch reported that 5 people signed up for HOSEA and that one of the couples is attending Mass here.  She said that the next series of HOSEA will be on Thursday evenings in order to make attendance at one of the sessions available to Fr. Joe.  She mentioned advertising for the next Open House and HOSEA. We discussed the possibility of a small newspaper ad next time.  Jan also suggested that we should consider changing to some month other than January to schedule our next Open House.  Chmn Kwan stated that he feels January is the best month because few things are scheduled for that month following the furious pace of the holidays.

Lon Atkins told us it is time to appoint new people to the Saturday evening mass as he and Margo have served 6 months.  He offered suggestions as to people who might accept the responsibility. Their final weekend is April 24.  Betty Galgoci has been responsible for checking on the 9:30 AM Mass.  She said that  Melanie Delp has been there the past several Sundays. We discussed the difficulty of getting 3-month commitments especially over the summer months.  Chmn Kwan commented that the welcoming  method we now use will continue since it appears to be working well.

Chmn Kwan challenged us to recruit more members for our Commission.  He said that we will be responsible for set-up and decoration for Fr. Jack’s party on June 12.  Other projects for the remainder of this year include Eucharistic Congress and International Club fundraiser . He asked if we had other goals or projects to suggest and received no response.

The meeting was adjourned with “Our Father” and exchange of peace.
