Community Outreach Commission
Meeting Minutes
March 13, 2003
Present: Don Barrett, Jan Bennar, Donna Howell, and
Nicole Kwan
Budget
U
Donna proposed budgeting approximately $250 per quarter for
charitable giving. She said that Frank Smolko has volunteered to do charitable
giving for the commission. Thanks, Frank!
U
We spent $1300 in Nov/Dec to start up IFHN
Pregnancy Care Center
U
Don told us about the Pregnancy Care Center’s “Baby Bottle
Boomerang”. It is a support-for-life fundraiser for the center. Participating
churches distribute baby bottles, which are provided by the center, to
parishioners. The parishioners take the bottles home and fill them with checks,
cash, and coins before returning them to church. Each bottle has a blank scroll
in it that the family can use to dedicate their offering to someone in their
family. We plan on doing this for a four-week period in June and July. We would
distribute for two weeks in June, and collect for two weeks in July. We will
promote the fundraiser in the bulletin, and the Heart to Heart.
Interfaith Hospitality Network
U
There will be a debriefing from February on March 27th.
U
It will be for coordinators and any volunteer would like to make
comments about the week.
Blood Drive
U
Yolanda has volunteered for the church to sponsor one. Date TBA.
Next Meeting: Thursday, 10 April 7:30 p.m., New Church
Respectfully submitted, Nicole Kwan

Present: Don Barrett, Jan Bennar, Donna Howell,
Nicole Kwan, Andrea Moran, and Yolanda Obando
Opening Prayer: Donna opened with a prayer
Cassell House
U
Patrick Nugent came and spoke to us. He thanked us for the
Wal-Mart gift cards we donated. They need a driver, in a 3-hour shift (is this
correct?). There will be a meeting February 13th for potential
volunteers.
Interfaith Hospitality Network
U
We had 3 single mother families in December. Don and Jan both
commented on how proud they were of our parishioners who volunteered, especially
Joe Cavanaugh and his wife. Evelyn, IFHN’s director, said the families
complimented our facilities and volunteers. Because of the storm, the families
stayed from Sunday night-Wednesday night. For the rest of the week, they went to
a hotel. Many thanks to Bill Cavanaugh for finding the hotel and booking rooms
for us.
U
Don noted that there were heating problems at night. He also said
we need to create emergency contingencies.
U
Supplies Review: We may need more bedding (blankets) and dishes.
It will be hard to tell what we need until a week before the next time. Next
time, we will need to get perishables. Jan will talk to Covenant United
Methodist to see if they will prepare for babies- have cribs, etc. on hand if we
need.
U
It is important that we STICK TO THE SCHEDULE
U
Food: We decided that if volunteers were bringing dinner and
planning on staying, they should make enough for their family, too. We may team
up dinner groups of four people per meal so they can coordinate. Liz Bachman was
our meal coordinator last time. We may have someone from outside of Bethany
shadow Liz, if she does it next time. We would like to have the same 2 people
(max. 4) for dinner. We need interim people to come between dinner and overnight
(every day 5-6pm).
U
We discussed sending postcards out with volunteers’ designated
jobs. We then made a list of coordinators needed: Supplies, Laundry, Driver, Day
Center Volunteer Coordinator, Cooks, Dining and Evening Host, Overnight and
Breakfast, Weekend Breakfast Coordinator, Set Up and Take Down, Week Coordinator
(must be available by phone 24/7), Greeter, Parish Volunteer Coordinator,
Laundry, and Head Coordinator.
U
The log will go in a kitchen cabinet with lockboxes.
U
Next Wednesday, the 20th at 7:00pm, there will
be a volunteer training at the church. Paul (last name?) from St. Pius will be
running the session. Refreshments will be served.
U
We will need to take a ledger nightly. Donna has created an
official logbook that will be passed on through volunteers. We will also be
debriefed by the previous week’s host church. It is up to us to establish the
rules for the family, including the security rules. Don is establishing the
security rules.
U
Possible next date: week of February 16th.
U
Many thanks to everyone for their hard work!
Next Meeting: There
will be a Volunteer Input Meeting Thursday, January 16th.

Nicole Kwan, Andrea Moran, and Yolanda Obando, Marty Sheehan
Opening Prayer: Donna opened with a prayer and
discussed the cleansing of feet
Reports of Sub-committees
U
Life Chain: The Life Chain event for this year has been cancelled,
due to illness in the chairperson’s family. Instead, we will have a “baby
shower” for either the Room at the Inn or the Pregnancy Care Center, during
which we would gather donation of baby supplies. The date for the “baby shower”
is Sunday, October 6th. Don will contact either organization to find
out what they need.
Kay Abraham came and spoke to us about the National
Right to Life petition that will be sent to President Bush, urging him to ban
partial birth abortion. Patrick will help her gather signatures after the 11:00
mass this coming Sunday. Don got 98 signatures from the Labor Day picnic last
week.
U
Special Food Collection: There will be a special food collection
September 22nd for Winston Salem Catholic Social Services. They are
in desperate need for food because their food pantry is empty. Yolanda is
looking for someone with a big car to help her take the food over.
U
Parish Social Education: Sister Johanna will be in charge of this
area from now on.
U
Crop Walk: It is on September 29th, from 4:00-7:00,
beginning on the High Point University Athletic Field. Nicole will recruit youth
at Youth Ministry this coming Sunday. An announcement has been placed in the
bulletin, too.
U
Legislative: There is a death penalty symposium at St. Francis of
Assisi during the weekend of September 21st. We look forward to
hearing Marty’s summary of the conference. We are planning on putting a written
summary in either the bulletin or Heart to Heart.
U
Interfaith Hospitality Network: We will host December 1st
-8th. The day center for High Point is on 216 N. Lindsay St and
Ilderton is selling us the van at a good price. We will house the families (3)
at the new church. We need 60 volunteers and have gotten about 20 so far. Andrea
is going to contact those 20 to see if they are still interested in helping. We
may need a support congregation for additional help. A volunteer coordinator
needs to be named. Suggestions have been: Wally Haarsgaard, Tess Stephenson, Joe
Deering, and Tom Burke. The coordinator needs to be well connected and
persuasive. We have broken up tasks in to categories and come up with church
groups who may be helpful. Don will talk to the Deerings (FISH), the KOC will
set up and break down, as well as drive; the youth may do tutoring. Other groups
include Young at Heart and Bethany. It was suggested we approach Cleary’s for
food donations. There will be volunteer training. On Thursday, Sept. 26th,
there will be a meeting to determine our volunteer status. Yolanda will make
sheets with positions that need to be filled. During the meeting, we may begin
to call people to recruit volunteers. We need to make sure there is something in
the bulletin. Note- we should make thank you notes for every volunteer once the
first week is over
U
Stewardship Fair: We received 5 inquiries.
Next Meeting: Thursday, 10

Meeting Minutes
March 14, 2002
Present: Donna Howell, Nicole Kwan, Andrea Moran, and Yolanda Obando,
Reports of Sub-committees
- Parish Social Education- The name of this
subcommittee had to be changed for clarity. We will have our meeting on
March 21st (at Don Barrett’s house) to make a display to
promote the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Members- please bring anything
you think may be useful. We already have videos and brochures. Andrea is
checking to see if Interfaith already has posters made to use as examples.
Interfaith Hospitality- Andrea has so far gotten a good base to start
with. She is going to call some volunteers from last year’s sign up sheet (the
one that was a general sign up for the COC from the fall). No firm date has been
set yet and we still need to work out logistics (location, etc). Andrea will get
a current list of churches already involved and ones that have been approached
so that we can think about other churches that should get involved. They are
still looking for a day center (hopefully in a house) for the families. Anyone
who wants to come to their meetings, which are every first Monday, is welcome.
Old Business- This coming weekend, the 16th and the 17th,
is our weekend to display materials about our commission in the narthex. We will
be using our display board and materials from last year. Andrea will do the
Saturday mass, Nicole will do 9:00 Sun and Donna and Yolanda will do 11:00 Sun.
Andrea will bring sheets to sign up new members.
The Simplicity Meal went well. Many thanks to:
Donna, Nicole, Mildred Kwan, Andrea, Yolanda, Lori-Ann, the nice European
couple, and everyone else who helped!
New Business- Committee heads have received a copy of our Commission’s
calendar for this year.
Donna read us some information about the Chicken Feed
for Habitat for Humanity. It will be on May 21st and hosted by 1st
Baptist Church. They have asked if anyone wants to help with organizing it for
this year. The contact is Eileen Douglass 883-4744. An announcement will be put
in the bulletin.
It has been requested that Marty Sheehan contact
Joseph Kavanaugh to recruit him to our Commission. He is also going to call Tess
Stevenson.
Yolanda has information about the 2002 Critical
Issues Seminar on April 9th -10th . The April 9th
seminar is all day and is called "The Gap between Rich and Poor, Lazarus Today".
We are offering to pay for anyone who would like to go. Yolanda is going to call
the Young at Heart group to offer it to them. The April 10th seminar
is called "Building Paths to Peace in Northern Ireland". Yolanda will put
announcements about these seminars in the bulletin.
In order to recruit new members, we are inviting
anyone who is interested to our meeting next month. For the first half hour, we
will give an overview of our Commission and tell people what they can do to get
involved. Refreshments will be provided. Yolanda will put an announcement in the
bulletin.

Renewal, Andrea and a graduate of the program, Bernadette, will speak. Check out
the website for some great information from Andrea. Thanks, Andrea for working
on that!
Old Business- none

Everyone needs to bring frozen, fresh, or canned vegetables to include in the
soup or bread. It will be in the old church and the tentative time
to meet is 5:30, based on last year’s experience with it. Everyone needs
to come. Please call either Donna or Nicole- regrets only.

Meeting Minutes
January 10, 2002
Present: Don Barrett,
Patrick Howard, Donna Howell, Andrea Moran, Nicole Kwan, and Marty Sheehan.
Welcome: Donna opened the meeting with a prayer
Minutes of the meeting on November 8, 2001: Andrea followed up on the
"Heart to Heart" article and said that the deadline had already passed for the
upcoming issue so her article on the Interfaith Hospitality Network will be in
the Lent issue.
Leadership Changes- Donna Howell and Yobanda Obando have generously
agreed to be co-chairs. Donna will report to the monthly Parish Council meeting
for us.
Reports on subcommittees
- Legislative- Marty briefly discussed the Charlie
Alston Mason (or Mason Alston?) case concerning the death penalty
- Life Issues- Don said that at this time it is a
"dormant situation"
- Parish Education- Nicole is now the head of this
subcommittee. Donna is working on getting Cathy Lucido to join. It was
unanimously agreed that we would not have a January program, as we had
proposed in our overall plan for quarterly programs. Don said that he would
be willing to help with a life issue program and suggested using the
Pregnancy Care Center as a possible resource for a speaker. Andrea suggested
that the subcommittee put out a survey asking parishioners about what issues
they would be interested in learning about. The survey will tell
parishioners what we are about and what we want to accomplish. We will have
a meeting in February to work on our ideas.
Interfaith Hospitality Network- A very specific list of all volunteer
jobs needed will be made ASAP so we can get it out to parishioners. It will most
likely be handed out after masses. In mid-February, a volunteer recruitment
meeting will be held to show the 20 minute video about IHN. It was suggested
that we get the "emcee" of each mass to announce either the meeting or that we
will be handing out information after mass. It was also suggested that, if it
works with their schedule, to have a woman who has graduated from the program
come and speak at the Parish Renewal. Other ideas were to take out an ad in the
bulletin, using the Catholic News and Herald and the website to let people know
what we are doing and to recruit volunteers. Andrea will ask Fr. Joe for
permission to promote IHN. The Education Subcommittee will have a meeting on
January 24th, a Thursday, at Don Barrett’s House at 7 pm. His address
is 2408 Cypress Court.
Old Business: none
New Business: Don suggested that we, as a committee, should work more
as a group on our programs. Andrea said she felt we needed to let the parish
know what we are doing on a regular basis. Marty will ask Fr. Joe if it is okay
to do so after every 1st weekend mass. As part of a monthly
commission awareness, we should get pictures from individual sub-committees to
use with our committee display.
We also worked on updating our committee contact list for the website. Nicole
will send out a copy of that list to members as soon as it is properly updated.

Minutes of the Meeting of Sept. 13, 2001: Accepted
Report on recent activities
- Crop Walk- Nicole reported that it was very
successful, she apologizes for not knowing approximately how much money IHM
raised and will find out ASAP. It was commented on how prominent IHM was at
the walk- go us! Nicole will talk to Terry about having a representative
from the youth group attend our meetings.
- Life Chain- Don reported that it did very well. There
were 110 people from IHM; 2,100 people total. Don has given information to
put in this coming Sunday’s bulletin. Yolanda and Grace noted how beautiful
and well organized it was. Don said that, for next year, they will get a
notice out in the bulletin four months in advance. Then they will send 2
postcards, one at 3 months, then 1 month, as reminders. He will set up a
critical path for dates and also work on getting photos for our commission’s
display board. Don thanked Patrick Howard for getting the Knights to come-
thanks to you, Don, for your great work! He would like to get a small
article about life out atleast once a month in the bulletin. Elizabeth
suggested that he could use our Heart to Heart space in the next issue for
it, our he could use the parish education subcommittee’s weekly bulletin
section for it.
- September 15th workshop- Marty, Donna,
Wally Haarsgaard, Terry, Elizabeth, and Nicole attended. Elizabeth highly
recommended everyone to go to the next one. Everyone enjoyed the Bishop’s
luncheon address. Sheila Kingsbury-Burt, the speaker on living wage, will be
our speaker at the parish education program.
Reports of Sub-committees
- Parish Education- The education program is entitled,
"Working for a Good Living". Our speaker on living wage will be Sheila
Kingsbury-Burt. It was requested that members bring 2 or 3 other people with
them. Spirit Song will be providing music for the evening. Please note- the
location for the program has been changed from the IHM gym to the IHM
library. Various other churches have been contacted, as well as inter-church
organizations. Renee will be bringing enough refreshments for 50 people, if
we need more (hopefully!), we can just go out and buy more. $45 was approved
to be used for the refreshments. Elizabeth has sent in announcements for the
bulletin.
- Finance- Mike was not present but Terry reported that
we have not spent any money since last month. Don said that we may need
money for Life Chain signs and Patrick responded by saying that the Knights
were willing to donate $100. Thanks Knights!
- Food Sunday/ Giving Wreath- Yolanda is going to make a
schedule for upcoming Food Sundays. She would like to put something in the
bulletin letting people know what kind of food the Shelter has requested. If
anyone knows of any agencies or families that they would like to be included
in the Giving Wreath program, please let her know. Don asked if anyone had
ever suggested a family within our parish. Yolanda told he that the Bethany
Society has before, she does contact Father Joe about it.
- Senior Wheels-Grace told us that the name of the
program has been changed to "Senior Resources of Guilford." John Morris, the
coordinator in Greensboro, wants to meet with the captains of High Point to
discuss various sides including how to keep records of who they helped and
what kind of services they provide.
- Legislative- They will get together with Joe Purello
next Thursday, the 18th, to get more information about
legislative issues and how to organize a legislative campaign.
- New Idea- Don suggested that we send a letter to the
President from our parish confirming that we are praying for and supporting
him. The idea will need to be passed by Farther Joe. It was suggested that
Terry Moran could draft a brief letter.
- Interfaith Hospitality Network- Terry reported that,
currently, we have 4 churches committed to being sponsors and 5 churches
committed to being supporters. Five more support churches are still needed.
Raising of money is going very well. We have not yet found a coordinator for
our parish-Andrea Moran was suggested. The group forming it in High Point
meets every week if anyone is interested in further involvement.
- Expense Plan- Elizabeth and Terry will meet with Mike
to draft an expense plan for our commission next month.
Old Business: none
New Business: Elizabeth has been working on a roster to send to all
members. A reminder was given that we are developing a volunteer pool and for
committee chairs to gather names to add to our list. A once yearly volunteer
appreciation event was suggested. A big thank you to Renee- she volunteered to
be our volunteer coordinator.

that we are still very financially sound. The finance committee will plan a
budget at the October meeting
- Crop Walk- Nicole has not heard from Terry Aiken

Interfaith Hospitality Network:Terry reported that everything is going
well. There has been a change- we are now going to join with the Greensboro
group, which is now the Guilford County group. There will be two rotations- one
in High Point and the other in Greensboro. We will need 30-60 volunteers per
church per week. There will be 3-5 families for one week every quarter. Andrea
Moran volunteered to help.
Old Business: none
New Business: Nicole Kwan graciously (Elizabeth made me put that!)
agreed to be secretary. Terry concluded that this meeting will eventually be

Meeting Minutes
June 14, 2001
Present: Elizabeth Brown, Ken Brown, Dot Hockett, Patrick Howard,
Donna Howell, Yolanda Obando, Mike Riccio, Marty Sheehan
Welcome: Donna opened the meeting with prayer.
Minutes of the Meeting of May 10, 2001: Accepted: Yolanda requested
that her name be corrected (has been recorded as Yolando incorrectly; should be
Yolanda).
Reports of Sub-committees:
- Crop Walk – A preliminary meeting will be held in
August with the walk to be scheduled either September 30 or the first
weekend in October. Dot is considering offering prizes to encourage
participation. The committee gave Dot approval to spend up to $100 to
support the crop walk; request for funds and/or reimbursement should be
directed to Terry or Elizabeth.
- Finance – Mike reported that the Community Outreach
Commission’s request for $5,000 for FY2002 was approved. Requests for
disbursements, once funneled through Elizabeth or Terry, are to be made in
writing and submitted to Glenda in the church office. It was agreed that the
committee would devote time during the September meeting to develop a plan
for spending the funds. Mike agreed to serve as Treasurer and intends to
provide quarterly budget reports to this group. Whenever possible, any
decision to spend money will be determined at the monthly meetings. However,
the committee recognize that should a need arise between meetings, Terry can
authorized an expenditure. THANKS, MIKE!!
- Food Sunday – Yolanda requested volunteers to help
deliver the food. Donna volunteered for July, Dot for August, and Yolanda
for September. It was stated that macaroni and cheese and canned hams have
been requested.
- Education – Elizabeth presented plans developed by the
Educational subcommittee (please see attached). Key points: educational
programs will be held October 25th (Faithful Citizenship) and
January 24th (Romero). Members are asked to mark these dates on
their calendars and are encouraged to invite at least five individuals
personally. It was also agreed that Christ the King Catholic Church
community would be invited to join us. Marty, Donna, Nicole, Terry and
Elizabeth will meet either the second Thursday of July or August to plan the
first program; Patrick will ask the KofC if they would be willing to provide
a meal that evening.
- Legislative – Marty provided a very interesting
summary of the status of current legislative issues relating to the death
penalty. It is expected that Texas will pass legislature to ban the death
penalty for the mentally ill; it is hoped that NC will follow suit.
Legislature has been passed giving district attorney’s more flexibility when
recommending the death penalty; previously the death penalty was mandated
when certain conditions exist. The legislature hopes to ease the number of
times the death penalty is recommended. Currently, approximately 220
individuals are on death row.
Community Action Commission
May 10, 2001, Meeting Minutes
Page 2
Another piece of proposed legislature is to
restrict the governor’s ability to provide clemency, due to conflict of
interests. NC currently has a number of individuals petitioning for clemency who
were prosecuted when Governor Easly was the district
attorney. The committee enjoyed the update and
requested that Marty continue to provide them.
Migrant Meal Program: The Knights of Columbus have agreed to provide a
meal to support Holy Infant Church’s Migrant Meal program on Sunday, July 1. Ken
and Nancy Brown, and Yolanda Obando have agreed to assist. Volunteers are asked
to meet at the Administration building at 11:30 on July 1st.
Interfaith Hospitality Network: None at this time, due to Terry’s
absence.
Old Business: None
New Business: Donna has submitted an application to the Duke Nonprofit
Leadership program. If accepted, she will need a grant idea; after discussion,
it was agreed that Maryfield would be a good source of ideas. Yolanda reported
that she’s working on the Church Directory and reported that it will be a
fund-raising opportunity. Currently, consideration is being given to donating
funds to Habitat for Humanity.

Communications Commission
Meeting Minutes
July 9, 2001
In attendance were Matt Bischoff, Al Guecia, Betty Guecia, Diane Jakubsen,
Cindy Rintoul, Sandy Wall and Father Jack Kelly. A motion was made and seconded
to approve the Minutes of June 11, 2001. Diane led us in prayer,
asking for the Lord’s guidance as we strive to carry out His will through this
Commission.
Odyssey Gala
- "Fall Out" flyers will probably be included with
the bulletins of August 4/5 and September 1/2 ("welcome weekends").
- Special donations: we discussed the idea of having
a "poster table kiosk" (Matt’s terminology), an unmanned table which
will have pictures or artist’s drawings of items that still require
funding. Guests at the Gala will be able to make anonymous pledges
and/or donations.
- The 50/50 Drawing will not exactly be a true 50/50
split. It was suggested that chances for the 50/50 be sold at $25 each.
Half of the intake will immediately be taken as a donation to the
Church. The remaining amount will be split among five lucky winners in
the following proportions: 40%, 20%, 20%, 10%, and 10%.
- Al reported that cigars will be available for
outdoor enjoyment.
Dedication on February 2, 2002
It’s been suggested that a "pig pickin’" (barbecue
with all the fixin’s) be the fare, instead of heavy hors d'oeuvres. This will be
much less expensive, and more fun. Betty stated that she is able to obtain
invitations inexpensively. The Commission will focus on the Dedication more
after the Gala.
Heart to Heart
July 31 is the deadline for the August issue.
Cindy will submit more photos of the new
construction.
Diane will interview Al for a story on the Gala.
Sandy will submit the article for "Have You Ever
Wondered?" (what does it mean that Jesus descended into hell, as stated in the
Creed?)
Diane commented that a photojournalist would be an
asset to the Commission.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting will be on Monday, August 13, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at the
Administration Building.

Meeting Minutes
May 10, 2001
Present: Elizabeth Brown, Ken Brown, Terry Brown, Dot Hockett, Patrick
Howard, Donna Howell, Steve Howell, Nicole Kwan, Yolando Obando, Lori-Anne
Sarmiento, Marty Sheehan, and guest, Stephen Chisolm
Welcome: The meeting was opened with prayer. Terry welcomed new
member, Lori-Anne Sarmiento, Knights of Columbus representative, Patrick Howard,
and guest, Stephen Chisolm. Brief introductions were made by all members to the
newcomers.
Committee Formation: The committee viewed the tape, "Faithful
Citizenship." A brief discussion followed. Consensus was that it was a good
tape, and certainly set a standard for all Catholics and Catholic parishes
regarding community responsibility. This tape may be used with the fall
educational program, to tie in with elections. Suggestions were made to also
invite candidates to speak; other parishes may be invited to attend. It was also
suggested that perhaps the KofC could sponsor a dinner. Marty and Patrick
volunteered to help the Education Committee plan the program.
Minutes of the Meeting of April 5, 2001: Accepted as written.
Reports of Sub-committees:
- Crop Walk – A brief overview was provided for new
members.
- Food Sunday – A brief overview was provided for new
members. Yolando reminded Ken that he and Nancy were scheduled for the next
Food Sunday.
- Education – Educational programs will be held: October
25th (current church), January 24th (new church), and
April 25th (new church). Given that ceremonies celebrating the
new church are not yet planned, January 17th is a back-up date in
case of conflict. The subcommittee is still developing specific programs,
but ask that all members marked these dates on their calendars!
While committee reports were being made, Terry also asked for assistance in
modifying IHM’s web description of committees (see attached).
New programs/Opportunities:
- Terry announced that a Disaster Preparedness and
Response workshop is being held Saturday, May 19th. It’s
sponsored by Catholic Social Services and is designed to aid parishes in
being active and effective in disaster responses. Any individual interested
in attending should contact Terry for additional information.
Terry also announced that Holy
Infant Church is requesting assistance with the Migrant Meal program. Local
parishes are asked to help by providing one meal to migrant workers on a Sunday
during summer (between July 1 and September 16). Yolando reported that the
parish has been involved with this program in the past, but not in recent years.
Patrick stated that he’d ask the KofC if they’d be interested in adopting this
as a project. Suggestions were made that volunteers could also be recruited
through a bulletin announcement; Terry said he’d request that. It’s anticipated
that approximately 60 individuals will be fed, requiring at least six
volunteers. Ken volunteered to drive and serve as long as the weekend chosen was
a non-Guard weekend. Yolando and Marty also volunteered to help. (Since the
meeting, Patrick called to say the KofC were interested in the first Sunday of
July; Elizabeth is confirming that date’s availability.)
- Patrick stated an interest in developing parish
support programs for parishioners with special needs and referenced a parish
community in Charlotte. Terry indicated that issue sounds more appropriate
for the Parish Life Committee. Its focus is to improve parish life for our
community; our focus is to reach out to the larger community in which we are
located. It was suggested that a multi-commission task force might be
appropriate however. Composition may include representatives from Parish
Life, Faith Formation, and the Education committee of this commission.
Elizabeth volunteered to work with Patrick.
Lenten Dinner Program: Terry thanked all who were involved, especially
Pat Vitt who was willing to serve as coordinator.
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Seven churches have committed to being
host churches. Habitat for Humanity may have rent-free space available for the
daycenter. Overall, good progress is being made.
Old Business: Yolando reported that the Bethany Society has broken for
the summer; she’ll ask for a representative when they reconvene this fall.
Elizabeth distributed copies of the roster; Yolando stated that she would
send information regarding volunteers who support her to Elizabeth to be added
to the Commission’s list of volunteers.
Terry reported that he wrote and submitted an article for Heart-to-Heart.
New Business: Terry suggested that the committee should meet in June,
and then take the remainder of the summer off. Committee members agreed!

Meeting Minutes
April 5, 2001
Present: Elizabeth Brown, Terry Brown, Dot Hockett, Donna Howell,
Steve Howell, Yolando Obando, Mike Riccio, Marty Sheehan, Fr. Jack Kelly
Welcome: Elizabeth Brown opened the meeting with prayer and
reflection. Terry welcomed new member, Marty Sheehan, and asked him to briefly
explain his interests to the group. Marty is actively involved in advocacy
regarding the death penalty.
Committee Formation: Elizabeth led a discussion on one of the seven
principles of social justice, Human Dignity. Much of the discussion was focused
on the fact that prejudices diminish human dignity. Members discussed personal
experiences relating to prejudice or discrimination. It was suggested that
perhaps Yolando and Elizabeth could develop a short presentation of needs of the
Hispanic community; they agreed. Date to be determined.
Minutes of the Meeting of March 8, 2001: Accepted as written. It was
noted that a some members did not receive a copy; Elizabeth apologized for the
oversight.
Reports of Sub-committees:
Crop Walk – no report at this time.
Food Sunday – Brief discussion of scheduled times.
Parish Education - The subcommittee is proposing that quarterly educational
events begin in October of this year. Fr. Jack suggested that the January event
be held at the new church and recommended that we request meeting space soon.
Elizabeth agreed to submit the request. Special emphasis will be given to the
first program at the new church (in January, 2002).
Lenten Dinner Program: Preparations for providing the simplicity meal
the following evening (April 6th) were reviewed. Pat Vitt agreed to
coordinate the Community Outreach volunteers. Response has been great; Donna
Howell and Pat Vitt agreed to prepare HOME-MADE soups for the meal! Other
members helped in obtaining bread, tea, etc. Thanks to all involved, with
special thanks to Pat!
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Terry Brown reported that the
presentation to the Parish Council was well-received. He also reported that a
motion was made and passed to have IHM be a support church initially for the
project with the goal/intention to be a host church when the new church is
built. Fr. Jack suggested the Terry’s phrase "well-received" was an
understatement; that there is enthusiastic support from the Parish Council, with
full support of both Fr. Joe and Fr. Jack. An IHM coordinator for this project
is still needed.

Old Business: Nicole Kwan was recognized for making the "meeting
reminder" telephone calls. Members indicated that it was very helpful and asked
that Nicole continue with that practice.
Yolando stated that she would send information regarding volunteers who
support her to Elizabeth, so they could be added to the Commission’s list of
volunteers.
Members reviewed the calendar of events and suggestioned corrections.
New Business: Three items were discussed. The first was a suggestion
to invite members of the Knights of Columbus and Bethany societies to serve on
the committee as a liaison to their respective societies. Terry will pursue a
Knights of Columbus representative; Yolando will work with the Bethany Society.
Nicole Kwan currently serves as a Youth representative; a suggestion was made to
see if Terry Aiken (new youth minister) would also like to participate in the
Commission.
The second item was to ask for a volunteer to serve as a legislative
coordinator. This individual would be the contact name for state- and
diocesan-level organizations monitoring key legislative issues. Our newest
member, Marty Sheehan, agreed to serve in that capacity. Thanks, Marty!
The third new item was a report by Terry that he was preparing an article for
the next Heart-to-Heart issue on the Commission and its activities.

Meeting Minutes
March 8, 2001
Present: Elizabeth Brown, Ken Brown, Nancy Brown, Terry Brown, Dot
Hockett, Donna Howell, Nicole Kwan, Yolando Obando, Mike Riccio,
Welcome: Elizabeth Brown opened the meeting with prayer and
reflection.
Committee Formation: Elizabeth led a discussion on the "Two Feet of
Social Justice." The committee examined and discussed the two feet upon which
social justice stands: direct service and social change. Direct service
typically involves a one-on-one interaction and helps individuals survive their
current crisis; social action is a collaborative effort and attempts to remove
the causes of social problems.
Following the discussion she distributed request forms for "Voices of Justice
– A Catholic Legislative Network" for those members interested in becoming
involved with legislative issues (an example of social action).
Minutes of the Meeting of 11 January 2001: Accepted as written.
Reports of Sub-committees:
Crop Walk – no report at this time.
Food Sunday – Yolando Obando requested volunteers to assist with delivering
the food collected on Food Sunday. She explained what was required and
circulated a sign-up list.
Parish Education - Elizabeth Brown reported that the subcommittee met with
Bridget Johnson and is actively planning a calendar of events, with hopes of
presenting the proposed calendar at the next committee meeting.
General note: Terry asked that (1) sub-committee chairs provide a
brief written description of their subcommittee and/or their events to him and
(2) requested that chairs recruit volunteers outside this committee so that we
won’t deplete ourselves. He stated that a volunteer list was being developed to
aid in this process. Yolando pointed out however, that it was helpful for
members to volunteer for events so that they would be more knowledgeable about
the committee’s activities; the committee agreed with her.
Diocesan activities: Elizabeth reported on the "Education for
Solidarity: Catholic Social Teaching and Economic Life" workshop she attended in
Charlotte. She also reported that the Vicariate office will hold its quarterly
meeting on March 24th in Greensboro, and invited any interested
members to contact her for more information.
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Terry Brown provided a quick summary
of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) for those members unfamiliar with
the program. He presented information about the IHN to the parish council with a
request that IHM become a member of the Network; the request is currently under
consideration. Terry indicated that the recommendation appeared to be favorably
received. Terry distributed copies of the handouts he provided to the council.
In order to participate in this effort, a coordinator or coordination team from
the Community Action Commission is required; Terry asked that members pray for
the right coordinator(s) to be identified.
Lenten Dinner Program: The Community Outreach Commission volunteered
to sponsor the April 6th Lenten soup dinner. Volunteers include: Nancy Brown,
Dot Hockett, Pat Vitt, Nicole Kwan,, Donna Howell, Yolando Obando, Ken Brown,
and Lori-Anne Sarmiento. However, a coordinator for this event is still needed.
Note: Pat Vitt had volunteered to serve as coordinator.
Old Business: The commission’s new name "Community Outreach
Commission" has received approval from the Parish Council.
New Business: An events calendar was distributed and members were
asked to make corrections or additions to it. Elizabeth will request that it be
posted on IHM’s web site.
Nicole Kwan volunteered to assist in "meeting reminder" telephone calls to
members.

Meeting Minutes
February 8, 2001
Present: Terry Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Dot Hockett, Ken Brown, Nancy
Brown, Donna Howell
Welcome: Terry Brown opened the meeting with prayer.
Minutes of the Meeting of 11 January 2001: Accepted as written.
Reports of Sub-committees:
Dot Hockett, at the request of the chair, provided an overview of Crop Walk.
Crop Walk occurs in October (and often during the fall Furniture Mart). Youth
walk three miles to help raise funds for the hungry; adults can also walk or
simply pledge funds. Twenty-five percent (25%) of collected funds stay in High
Point. Other High Point agencies and groups, such as Open Door Ministries, also
participate in the walk.
Elizabeth Brown gave a brief update on the Social Justice subcommittee. She
made contact with Bridget Johnson of the Greensboro Vicariate office of Catholic
Social Services. Bridget informed her that there is an one-day workshop on
"Education for Solidarity: Catholic Social Teaching and Economic Life" scheduled
for March 3rd in Charlotte (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Also, on March 24th,
there will be a regional quarterly meeting in Greensboro. Elizabeth will send
information regarding the one-day workshop to other members of the Community
Life Commission.
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Terry Brown provided a quick summary
of the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) for those members unfamiliar with
the program. Coordination meetings of the IHN are held the first Monday of the
month at 7:00 p.m., at the United Way building. In order to participate in this
effort, a coordinator or coordination team from the Community Life Commission is
required. Until a coordinator(s) is identified, Terry Brown and Ken Brown will
attend coordination meetings. Interested members are asked to contact Terry
Brown (812-3120).
Lenten Dinner Program: Terry reported that the Community Life
Commission has been asked to sponsor one of the Lenten Friday night soup
dinners. These dinners follow the Stations of the Cross and consist of providing
two types of soup, bread, and juices. Terry, on behalf of the Commission, agreed
to sponsor the final dinner in the series. Volunteers are needed to help in this
event. Possible volunteers include Nancy Brown and Dot Hockett. More information
will be provided at the March meeting.
Old Business: Terry reported that he requested a $1,250 budget of the
Parish Council; he will let the Commission know if and when it’s approved.

New Business:
Transportation service: Terry reported that he was approached by Fr.
Jack, through Ann Marie, regarding the possible formation of a transportation
ministry to help parishioners in need of transportation to attend mass. After
discussion, it was the group’s consensus that this ministry should be
coordinated through the Family Life Commission, since it affects parish life.
Possible name change: It was suggested that the name "Community Life
Commission" should be changed to better describe the work of the commission.
Suggestions included: Social Action Commission and Community Outreach
Commission. Community Outreach Commission was the favored name. Terry will
determine what is required to change the name formally.

National Interfaith
Hospitality Network
A community response for
Homeless Families
Founded and headquartered in
Summit, NJ; comprises over 75 network programs across the nation; nationally,
over 70% of guests in the networks become self-sufficient/find permanent housing
within 8 weeks; in the Greensboro Network 80% find permanent housing with an
average stay of 11 weeks.
Requires 8- 13 host churches per network, as many support churches as
possible; Greensboro network has 13 host churches and 10 support churches.
Cost $20,000 for capitalization (van and equipment, e.g. cots and materials;
annual operating costs are from $50,000 to $70,000.
Annual operational costs includes hiring a Network Director/Case
Worker/Social Worker, operating the van, and renting/purchasing space for a day
center. Day center provides showers, rest area (sick, night-shift), activity
center (weekends), address and staff office.
Operational budget per church is $800 per year, $200 per quarter (or
$200 per residence week); Greensboro Network indicates that the weekly residence
cost per church is less than $100 due to donations.
Network supports a maximum of 14 people (men, women and children), or 3-5
families; limited by the size of the van. In Greensboro, historically the
children are 5 years of age or under.
Each Host Church hosts the families one week per quarter. Spend nights at the
host church and day operating out of the day center (work, training, job
hunting, school); week is defined as Sunday-Saturday. Weekend activities are
conducted at the day center.
Church volunteers manage the duties during host week; 40-60 volunteers are
involved each week. One male and one female adult stays with them at all times
and sleepover.
Host church provides home-style supper, breakfast and snacks; breakfast is
usually foods that that the families can use to make their own meals, e.g.
bagels, cereal, fruits, juices, coffee, etc. Host church needs sufficient space
to serve as a common area and for the family-style meals.
Evening activities are home-style with homework, tutoring, socialization and
quiet time as the predominate activities.
No visitors are permitted; guests and not approached to attend church
services unless a initiates the request to attend.
Families are referred from Salvation Army, Open Door or other appropriate
community agencies.
Legal background check, medical screen, follow standard rules, routine, hours
and bedtime. Working, in training program or actively pursuing both. Greensboro
Network accepts less than 50% of referrals due to failure to pass screening.
Greensboro Network is 501 (c) (3) and we will organize under their charter
until we are set up as our own 501 (c) (3) organization.
Greensboro Network could also provide the initial sharing of their day center
at 707 N. Green St.
Greensboro Network will provide walk-through of a potential host church’s
space to provide an assessment of its suitability for hosting guests and ideas
on how to use the space efficiently and effectively. Additionally,
Forming network’s first steps: 1) Organize, 2) apply for 501 (c) (3)
certification from the IRS, 3) develop church recruitment structure and recruit
additional churches, 4) develop fund raising structure and write/submit grants
and funding applications, 5) hire director, 6) set up day center, 7) buy van.
Community Life Commission
Meeting Minutes
January 11, 2001
Present: Terry Brown, Donna Howell, Nicole Kwan, and Mike Riccio
Attachment: Agenda
Welcome: Terry Brown opened the meeting with prayer and introductions
were made.
Minutes of the Meeting of 13 December 2000: Accepted as written.
Reports of Sub-committees: None.
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Terry and Mike reviewed the concept
for Donna and Nicole.
Social Action Project: Terry reported that Fr. Joe had asked the
Community Life Commission to consider developing/adopting a social action
project that would help to define the Parish in its association with the
project. It was agreed that belonging and participating in the
Interfaith Hospitality Network would take us a long way in accomplishing that
goal. Terry is to seek approval of project from the Parish Council. It is
estimated that the maximum cost for operations would be $200 per quarter.
Financial participation for start-up costs cannot be determined at this time,
but it could possibly include contributing to the network for beds, a van, a day
center and a full time staff person.
Budget: It was agreed that the Community Life Commission would request
an annual operating budget of $1,250 per quarter, which would include conference
fees, travel, training, hosting events, Hospitality Network operating costs, and
miscellaneous. Mike Riccio will present out request to the Finance Council.
Old Business: Terry reported that Elizabeth Brown had made initial
contact with the regional social justice representative (somehow connected to
Catholic Social Services) in the person of Bridget Johnson. Elizabeth and
Bridget have agreed to meet in the near future to develop and understanding of
how the Community Life Commission and parish can participated in regional social
justice issues and activities.
New Business: Terry stated that the schedule of meetings for the
Community Life Commission has been placed on the Parish Meeting Calendar. The
schedule of meetings is the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
in the church administrative building. The only foreseeable exception is
April (Holy Thursday), therefore the meeting in April will be held on the 1st
Thursday.
Next Meeting: Thursday, 8 February 2001, 7:30 p.m.,
Admin. Building Lunchroom
December 13, 2000
Present:
Elizabeth Brown Terry Brown Fr. Jack Kelly
Lisa Powell Mike Riccio Tess Stevens
Guest: Bob Bergen, Interfaith Hospitality Network
Welcome: Terry Brown opened the meeting with prayer and introduced
Mike Riccio as a new member and welcomed Tess Stevens (Charitable Contributions
subcommittee) to the commission meeting. He quickly reviewed the structure of
the commission and its subcommittees.
Interfaith Hospitality Network: Mr. Bob Bergen of the Interfaith
Hospitality Network then provided the commission members with an interesting
overview of the Network. The Network’s goal is to provide homeless families with
shelters, meals, and support to become independent. Basically, a network
consists of member churches that take turns hosting three to five families (up
to 14 individuals). The network provides beds, bedding, and transportation; the
host church provides space for sleeping and eating, and volunteers to provide
meals who also eat with the participants. One couple from the host church is
also asked to sleep overnight with the participants. Participants either go to
work, school, or to a day center during the day, with the Network providing
transportation. Churches are asked to commit to hosting four weeks a year.
Churches can also choose to financially support the program if they are not
interested in providing host services.
Currently, there is an active Network in Greensboro and efforts are underway
to form one in the High Point community. Seven High Point churches have already
expressed an interest (four Methodists, one Presbyterian, one Catholic, and one
Friends). An information/organizational meeting will be held January 8th
at the United Way of Greater High Point on Church Street.
Prior to departing, Mr. Bergen left brochures and promised to provide Terry
with a copy of an educational video.
A brief discussion ensued. It was agreed that we would send a representative
to the January 8th meeting to learn more. Initial discussion pointed
out that we might want to consider being a (financial) support church until the
new church is built; given that the school was present on church property. It
was pointed out, however, that other churches with similar concerns chose to
host during school breaks only.
Terry suggested Ken Brown represent us at the January 8th meeting
since he attended the December meeting with Terry. Terry will call and ask him.
December 13, 2000
Meeting Minutes
New Activities: Elizabeth provided a brief report regarding possible
parish awareness programs. Donna Howell, Nicole Kwan, and she met during
November. They proposed that parish awareness activities may fall into two
phases. The first phase is to develop a regularly scheduled educational series
(could be as frequently as monthly or as infrequently as quarterly) supplemented
with weekly bulletin and web site items, to help parishioners respond to the
call to social justice:
- Within themselves
- Within their families
- Within their worksites/schools
- Within the community
The initial program would help define "social action/social justice" and
subsequent programs would focus on specific areas of social action. In time, it
was hoped that specific suggestions for becoming more involved (volunteer
opportunities, etc.) would follow each presentation. The weekly bulletin/web
site items would suggest a social action implication of that week’s readings.
A suggestion title for the program was "Whatsoever You Do."
Phase Two could:
- begin to develop programs geared to children and youth
- utilize Diocesan resources ("prepackaged workshops,"
for example)
- provide materials (bookmarks, wallet cards, etc.)
Commission members provided two very helpful suggestions. The first was to
consider developing a budget to support these activities; budget information
should be submitted in January. The second suggestion was to contact the Family
Life Commission which is considering a parish educational series. It was
suggested that perhaps we could coordinate through them and offer one program
quarterly. Elizabeth will contact that Commission for more information.
New Business: Terry informed the group that it was the Community Life
Commission’s turn to host Welcome Sunday. Hosting involves ordering and
obtaining 50 dozen donuts (either get a check in advance from the church office,
or plan to be reimbursed), making coffee, and hosting the table following all
Sunday morning masses. Mike volunteered, and Lisa said to call with specific
needs. Terry will coordinate recruiting volunteers for that morning.
Next Meeting:
Wednesday, January 11th, 7:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth Brown
