EVANGELIZATION COMMISSION
MEETING, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Jan 18, 2010, 7 PM,
Room #2 Present: Chmn Kwan, Jan Hitch, Betty Galgoci, Nancy Skee
·
Meeting
opened with all reading the Capital Campaign Prayer.
·
Jan Hitch
read the minutes of the November meeting which were approved as read.
·
Nancy
Skee reported that 48 are registered for the Spanish classes and one new
teacher has volunteered, Graciela Rodriguez. Classes began Jan 14.
·
When
serving at Simplicity Meals during Lent was discussed, it was stated
that Kathy Faltynski will schedule volunteers at the next International
Club meeting in Feb.
·
Jan Hitch
reported that she is preparing a flyer to be inserted in the IHM
bulletin as well as reminders about HOSEA amd Open House which is Feb
10. She has also prepared flyers to be posted in public places where
permitted. She has arranged to have it posted on one television station
and sent e-mail to local Catholic Churches and schools. Nancy Skee has
sent notices to HPE, Greensboro Record, and Diocesan Paper. Since
Renewal of Vows is scheduled for the same evening as Open House Jan and
Nancy will be coordinating refreshments with Bethany and Knights of
Columbus. Jan is engaging speakers for the Open House and presenters for
the HOSEA program.
·
Betty
Galgoci suggested we change the 3 month commitment we have asked our
Welcome Table Greeters to sign up for be reduced to one month. Chmn
Kwan stated that the longer commitment for those willing to do it
requires less supervision and distributes responsibility. Nancy added
that with the substitute server list she is working on for each mass,
those who accept the longer assignment do not have to personally be
there for each mass for 3 months but would be responsible to see that
someone is there for the 3 month period. Nancy has been recruiting
extra servers for Welcome weekends. Randy Moser states that the system
is working. It should be noted that Randy has furnished the beautiful
bookmarks that are presented to new parishioners at the Welcome Table.
It was decided that Welcome Table Reps be invited to attend our next
meeting to evaluate the program and suggest enhancements and
improvements.
·
Jan Hitch
will represent our Commission as a speaker at Volunteer Appreciation
Night. Nancy reported that Kathy Faltynski is organizing the
refreshments and Chmn Kwan, the music.
·
Chmn Kwan
mentioned that we must begin to think of plans for International
Festival and Eucharistic Congress.
·
The
meeting was closed with the Our Father and peace hugs.

Giving
Tree Update: There was a short summary about this in the Bulletin
last week. We filled requests from 731 cards supporting 14 local
agencies
and a handful of parish families. Thanks to all for the contributions.
·
Habitat For Humanity:
December's scheduled event was rained-out. We were
slated to work on siding and roofing, but the conditions were unsafe.
The
next opportunity for volunteers will be in March.
·
Reading
Connections: At our last meeting in November, we mentioned that a
new literacy ministry was in it's early stages of development here at
IHM.
While there are currently a handful of active volunteers participating
in
our parish, our volunteer coordinator has been forced to pull back. We
are in need of a replacement. Christine and I will work with the
existing
volunteer corp in search of a coordinator. Meanwhile, if any of you
know
of someone that might be a good fit here, please contact us with
details.
·
All other ministries are running smoothly...
Hispanic Ministry—Brad Hammett
·
The Hispanic Ministry has not met
since our last Council meeting. Hence, there is not much to report. From
what I know the Antorcha Guadalupana went well, we also had a good turn
out for the “Our Lady of Guadalupe” celebration in December.
·
The Christmas mass was not well
attended but many have expressed concerns that it is because of the
timing of the mass (commenting that the Mass is too “early”)– the
Hispanic culture normally celebrates with Mass on Christmas Eve,
followed by a large meal and then fellowship and exchange of gifts.
o
Fr Jack says that staff is looking
at mass times
·
Also , one of the chorus group have
informed that they will no longer be available to alternate and play at
every other mass, so we currently have one chorus group that will
continue and sing at each Mass. Although we have tried to be more
organized when receiving the Eucharist with “ushers” we still have a
slight problem with people not understanding and following the direction
of the ushers – but we have made a lot of progress.
·
FYI - I will not be able to attend
the meeting on Monday. Please forward any
comments/suggestions/questions/etc…..

NEXT MEETING: February 8th
Property and Facilities—Steve Ilderton
·
I have
spoken with Bill Nicholson and he reported spending most of the past
month or more at the school handling small issues. He also reported a
concern with the current maintenance personnel at the school due to
illness and job performance. A conference is scheduled for next week on
this matter.
·
A leak in the church roof was
repaired.
·
We are still waiting for the
kneelers to be repaired(fabric).
·
I have just written a notice for
the bulletin soliciting volunteer help and material donors for the music
ministry parking area. This is not a big job but will take some
landscape timber, gravel and labor at no cost to the church. I hope to
report on the progress next month.
Youth Ministry—Carly Griffin
·
On
January 13st there will be the 3rd annual High Point Interfaith Tour. It
is offsite and begins at 3:30 PM, at IHM Church. Parents will need to
provide transportation, and it concludes at 7 PM at Wesley Memorial.
This is a great way to learn of other faiths in our community, as well
as spreading our own to the youth of different churches.
·
February
6th is the Ski Trip to Winterplace, WV. The transportation is by a
Motorcoach Bus. From 5 Am to 930 PM.
·
February
26-27 is the annual 30 Hour Famine. Located at First Presbyterian
Church. They are again sleeping in boxes outside, weather permitting.
Great way to raise money and awareness for the hungry in the world.
Stewardship – Randy Moser
Two major activities that need to be mentioned this
month:
·
Volunteer Appreciation Night is Thursday January 28th.
If you haven't mentioned this event to your ministries and volunteers,
please get the word out. This weekend the bulletin insert will be
highly visible, but sometimes people don't read the bulletin (I know).
attached is the insert if you want to forward to anyone.
·
This event will show our appreciation for all the time
and talent given to our church community from our loyal volunteers. The
format will be as last year with a short program and then a reception
with entertainment along with fellowship. All are welcomed to attend.
·
The Stewardship Strategic Ad-Hoc Team met on January 11th
to discuss Stewardship at IHM; specifically time and talent. The
meeting went well and a lot of brainstorming ideas were presented and
discussed.
·
A more detailed report with recommendations will be
provided at February Council, but a very high level overview included
three areas: An planned assessment of all ministries/commissions to
better understand what each entails and time requirements. A template
for assessment will be developed to have consistency. Second, was the
need to encourage engagement from the Twenty and Thirty Something
generation and finally during Fall of 2010 offer a Stewardship Fair like
we use to with the objective of recruiting volunteers. More details to
follow as this Team finalizes recommendations
Communications – Frank Smolko/Lianne Finger
·
The next Heart
to Heart deadline is Friday, Jan. 29. It’s a bit early, but will allow
ample notice for Parish Renewal. Please note that this is the last Heart
to Heart until mid-summer, so anything that needs to be announced
through the end of the school year needs to be included in this issue.
·
In addition to Parish Renewal, the Communications
Commission would also like an informational article about Lent if
someone will volunteer to write it. We feel it would be nice for both
old and new Catholics to learn a little more about how we observe lent –
the changes in mood, music, simplicity meals and the like.
·
If you have any articles, announcements, ads or pictures
you’d like in the next issue, please forward them to me at this email or
put in the Heart to Heart inbox at church.
·
Please try to adhere to the deadline as much as possible.
If you know you are going to miss it, please let me know by that Friday
the 29th, so I can account for the space. It takes several
days (and attempts) to get everything to fit and still be readable.
Thank you in advance for your consideration!

New Business:
Fr Jack told PPC that he will announce his leaving IHM in Heart to
Heart in July. He will have been here 11 ½ years. Says it’s just time
to move on. It took more than a year of prayer and thought to make the
decision. There is a strong candidate, an oblate looking at the
position. I am excited about the church’s future. Not sure where he is
going. |
